great deal
Very good experience. This is an all-inclusive hotel. The buffet was not the best I have ever seen, but it was very good. The hotel was not the best that I have ever stayed at, but it was very nice. It has a nice pool, and has its own area of beach. Optional activities are located nearby. The staff was good also. The hotel provided evening entertainment which was very good. Some of it was good, and some of it, (like the Michael Jackson singer/impersonator) was almost amazing. To summarize, to me this hotel experience is not lacking in any area, and I would recommend it. My wife and I would like to go back and stay there again. It is an excellent deal for the price.

Money-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
There is a bus stop across the street. You can take the local bus to nearby areas, (or to WalMart if you wish), or you can take the bus downtown, and there catch other buses to other places.

Good hotel for the price
I recommend this hotel if your are staying for no longer than a week. I have stayed there for 2 weeks. The hotel is all inclusive, so you can drink and eat whatever you want. But i have to say, that the juices are too sweet and therefore the cocktails are way too sweet and undrinkable. The food, it's ok for like 5 days, after that you start to think it is disgusting. The staff are friendly and helpful. The beach, a lot of people say that it is dirty and small, the truth is, they clean the water by the beach every morning and there are lot of beach chairs. You have the option to go to the pool, which is big, clean and with a lot of chairs.

All-Inclusive Pro
Another great trip to Barcelo!
Barcelo Costa Cancun is a super value! It's slightly off the beaten path (just on the other side of the bridge which crosses over the lagoon at the northwest corner of Cancun's hotel zone & next door to the pirate ship dock & observation tower.) However, it's easily accessible to all the hotel zone has to offer by simply jumping on the bus just outside of the hotel. I believe the exchange rate would place a bus ride somewhere around 75 cents per person. The hotel staff is pleasant & attentive. It's all-inclusive which is the only way to travel on a budget - no suprise bills at check-out! Unfortunately, there are reps in the lobby who may make themselves out to be "greeters", but they are booking timeshare tours. If interested in spending a morning learning about a timeshare/vacation club at another georgeous resort, don't immediately say yes. They will always end up sweetening the deal. The only other possible drawback could be that the water is sometimes choppy due to the boats passing in and out of the lagoon. Otherwise a great time & we will definitely be staying there again.

Short drive from hotel
Take the bus to the Plaza Las Americas. It is a beautiful mall which is frequented by the local community instead of tourists. There are several major department store chains and an excellent movie theatre with reclining seats. Just be sure to take pesos or use your credit card because the theatre doesn't accept US dollars.

wouldn't stay here again
The first day we check in it was a slow process. They put us on the forth floor with the elevator broken and not going to fix it but it had an ok view so we ask to be move to a different room so they said they would but when we got to the room it was looking at the trash can and no balcony. They said that was all they had but we knew that was not true it was not that full so we had to argue and they gave us a better room. the food was limited. they had 3 place to go. one was buffet and the other two were sit down but not much on the menu. the pool was ok good size but no swim up bar. the beach area was small and not much area to swim and no waves.

We enjoyed it.
We vacationed at the end of Jan. 2011. This was our fifth consecutive year to this area of Mexico. The atmosphere at the hotel was laid back, and the staff was attentive. They even brought drinks to us, which was a first for us. The resort was small, but comfortable. The rooms were super clean and comfortable. The mini fridge was stocked daily. There was ample seating on the beach, which had nice sand and we didn't have to wait long for drinks. The buffet food was average -- as is typical of resorts like this -- and the the ala carte restaurants were slightly above average, as is typical with our previous experiences at other resorts. They promote that they have food 24-7, but the snack bar food isn't what I would have picked. Hot dogs... pseduo california rolls. Sugar cookies that need more sugar...bologna cold cuts...and pizza (pseudo pizza). I'd have been more happy with nacho fixings or chips and salsa for snack. Though, my other half liked the california rolls. (I usually do, but this wasn't sushi rice.) The self-serve bar at the snack bar is nice. We stayed at Barcelo Maya Beach a few years ago, and I liked their snack bar better. The location was nice. We took long walks up and down the hotel zone. We enjoyed being near the marina. It afforded us easy access to the ferry to Isla Mujeras, scuba diving and the Dinner cruise on the Pirate ship. We also enjoyed using the sea kayaks that were part of the resort amenities. We don't usually participate in the scheduled activities, but this time we took the bicycle tour and would recommend all of these activities to others. We enjoyed the dinner cruise on the Pirate Ship, but it was a little expensive. You are paying for the unlimited drinks and the entertainment. The steak dinner wasn't anything to write home about and the cruise wasn't much either. The one thing we didn't like was the constant pushing about tips. On the Pirate Ship they say they share tips so at the end of the night you put your tip in the treasure chest. They stand there until you put money in. AND your server will also ask for a tip. I don't mind tipping for good service but I am always turned off by people asking for it and saying, "Don't forget to save some money for me! Don't put it all in the chest." I think if the price of admission were less, I'd be more okay with this extra pushing of tips...but we paid nearly $90 a person! I think it was only worth $50 because the dinner and dessert was nothing special. The public transportation is excellent and we took it down to AquaWorld. We were a little skeptical about AquaWorld, because we like small group experiences. When we went out for our snorkle tour there were only a few others, so it was fine. The snorkling itself was awesome! There are these big fish (that you are not supposed to feed, but we did) and they were all over us. They nibble at you, but don't bite. Awesome experience - probably the most memorable experience.
