Very nice staff. Some operational challenges

We selected the Royal Service option which had the added value of a private beach and butler and suite rooms. We had a large group of family and friends with us too. Overall the staff was great, very friendly and helpful. The butler acted more like a concierge, who was there as your go to guy for help with reservations, planning and getting you around the complex on a golf cart – they are a great resource to have. As it’s my first trip to DR I don’t have much to compare to other DR resorts, but I do travel around the world quite a bit and know average service from great service and amenities. The DR beaches and water are great for beach bumming, but forget snorkeling as there is no life in the water here to see. And for diving you have to go to another island which is about 1.5 hours away by bus and boat to get to a reef. Beach is set up nice with palm umbrella’s lots of chairs and large “beach beds”. And there is a small bar at the SR beach for the Royal Service (RS) guests only. To get the most of your trip and keep the attention of the staff, bring lots of dollar bills with you for tipping. A small tip repeated often goes a long way here to keep you in the staff’s attention. It also helps where ever you go, as DR is a poor country and wages are low, so it can really help these folks and they respond greatly to it. Restaurants were nice inside and had pretty good variety, but food was marginal most times. It really depended on what you ordered, if you order lobster or steak; order it as separate meals as any surf and turf combo tends to have a small overcooked piece of meat that is tough. Pork chops tend to be dry and tough too. Chicken and shrimp dishes are usually the best bets. Ribs at the American grill are great, shrimp dish at the French place was great, Dominican restaurant was the best overall I think (order Mofongo) and the American Grill was right up there. Most disappointing were the Thai and French restaurants. The Gabi grill which is for the RS only crowd is decent usually. House wine is pretty bad, and wine list is pretty pricy. DR beer is pretty good and mixed drinks are always good. My favorite food everyday was the fried chicken from the pool snack hut, very limited menu but always a good bet. Highlights were parasailing $40pp, using the catamarans (free) and pools. Deep sea fishing was huge waste $650, Glass bottom boat was ok because we had a big group so we had fun, but as there is no sea life to see is disappointing. Gift shop is way over priced (be sure to bring your own sun screen they clip you for $25/can) best bet for gifts is to walk down to one of the shopping centers on the beach for cigars, sunscreen, wraps, trinkets. Overall was a good trip and having a big group really made it great one. I would go back to this resort, but would want to try another one first so I have some comparison.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Avoid gift shop especially for sunscreen. Go to little shopping center on beach for gifts, cigars, trinkets. And negotiate for everything. There are a lot of tour hawkers walking beach for all kinds of excursions, make sure you can leave from in front of your hotel if at all possible and not have to take a bus to get to it. It will also allow you to see what their equipment looks like.

Melia Tropical Resort

An absolutely wonderful resort. The staff was absolutely terrific! Beautiful beach and pools. We LOVED THE STAFF..ESTHER @ THE "SQUARE BAR" , ODILA.. (ODY) THE GREETER AND OUR CORDINATER...and my deep tissue massage was amazing!!!! We upgraded our room..was worth it...jacuzzi tub..fridge...food was yummy! Book your dining plans a day in advance since the resort becomes super busy:) We went from Sept. 20th ..Friday to Friday...Not overly crowded...no lines. Make sure you have lots of ones on you..you might need singes to tip the trains and golf cart drivers...they are VERY appreciative...Night life ends early...by 1am..there are nightly shows...fun..and the bars are fun..even an american sports bar in the casino area...tv's were showing different American teams. Fabulous time...we are ready to go back!!!

Getaway

I had a wonderful time! The food was great and the people were nice and very attentive. My friend and I did three excursions...we did fishing, Zipline, and Dune Buggy. Don't do the fishing excursion if you're not use to small boats and big waves. The other 2 were fun! We also caught a couple of the shows which were very good. Only thing they could improve on is better drink selection. But everything else was great!

great bang for your buck

hotel was great. beach was great. food was great. drinks were great. size of the property was the only thing i didn't like that much since i don't like to walk but they did have a lot of trolley's and golf carts around to take you places so that made up for it. the cost for two people to travel round trip, with all meals and drinks included for 9 days, was the best part.

Large Complex: Hit or Miss with the food

Check-in was easy, upgraded room was discounted. Pictures of place online are representative of the complex. You just don't realize how large the complex is until you get there; (lots of walking) over 1200 units onsite with different branches of the hotel conjured together. Unfortunately, all the pools are not accessible to all guests. Beach was very nice and white, but lots of seaweed onshore. The restaurants give you variety, but not so good in quality of food. The French & international restaurants are the only 2 worth eating at, but only available at night for dinner. The buffets for bfast and lunch are all right, nothing too special, but staff switches out the types of foods each day. Got a small sickness twice over our 10 day excursion, so beware of some food. I do not think there is a health department in the Dominican, try not to experiment with foods outside of your normal diet. Most people did not tip the staff because of "all inclusive" but we did because in places like Mexico, they demand tips for service. The staff is very thankful for small tips of a dollar or two. Overall, great value, but I would probably go to another resort next time. Probably the Hard Rock or Rui Palace.

Dining tip: In Hotel

Staff really tries to push selling you a timeshare, get your spa coupons before you go into meeting (which was scheduled the next morning after we arrived) with sales reps and make conversation quick and short, otherwise they'll waste 90 minutes of your sunlight on vacation.
