Melia Caribe Hotel in Punta Cana

We enjoyed our stay tremendously except for the rainy day w/ no umbrella in room to use (we saw other guests that had). Most of the restaurants were great except for the Capri whose seafood tasted like day old leftovers. The best were the French and Japanese. Saona Island excursion was a disaster; there was a torment of rain and crew knew this days before and never offered any reimbursement. My camera was ruined on trip and all in all, the value was over-priced. The parasailing thru Scuba Caribe, associated w/ hotel was also a rip off - they charged $80.00 for 6 minutes that should have been 10-15 minutes. They refused to recompensate. Staff at Capri restaurant knew in advance that we were celebrating our 10th anniversary and did nothing special to recognize us. Other than these unfortunate experiences - the hotal stay was one of the best ever trips we ever took.

"unforgettable family getaway"

Check-in was disastrous. There is an overall lack of management and communication which combined with the heat in the lobby will at least challenge your patience. The staff is not prepared for large groups (5 rooms). They did not correct our situation until the 3rd day of our vacation. Transportation within the grounds is frustratingly slow in the form of a fume sputtering train. Unfortunately, walking is not always an option since amenities are spreadout on oposite ends of the resort and a person can dehydrate while walking to the lobby. Plus when it rains you simply have to get wet or miss dinner. We found that tipping was the only way to get some attention - so bring lots of singles. On a good note; The food at the buffet was surpringly good and plentiful as were the drinks. The staff was inept but very friendly. We all enjoyed the nightly shows. Overall, we were dissapointed half the time and frustated the other half.

Definitely Not Sandals

Let's start by stating that we realize that our past experiences greatly affect our present/future experiences. In saying this, our vacation at Melia was quite disappointing when compared to our past vacation at a Sandals resort. The room had a bad odor, much like a musty smell. In addition, the room would not cool off, which caused getting ready at night a sweaty frustration. The room, however, was livable....after all, we were there for the beach anyway!! The food offered on the buffets was not appealing. For instance, the hamburgers offered for lunch sat in grease until you grambed one and dangled it a while to drain the patty. The food at the restaurants, however, was great. We thoroughly enjoyed the Hacienda, Capri, and Hokkaido. The grounds of the resort was what made the resort--absolutely gorgeous! Once again, there were drawbacks....the "concierges" throughout the resort continued to offer "welcome packets" which correponded to a 90 minute presentation promoting the resort and VIP services. The beach was also full of people trying to sell tours and activities. For my husband and I, the selling of things was a bit overwhelming for our taste. We like to sit back and read a book without having to stop for a 20 minute presentation. OK, ok, enough negativity. We like to consider ourselves positive, but our experience at Melia was much different than the one we had at Sandals. (Sandals was awesome!)

Nice Stay at Melia

Great to relax by the pool and sea, but could be noisy - lots of families with young children / sometimes loud music / D.J. present. Rooms and service - most of time - were great. Breakfast and lunch buffets offered a lot of variety and tasty selections. Dinner was excellent, but you have to make daily reservations for the following evening and sometimes it's difficult to get in at a reasonable time.

Again, reservations can be difficult to obtain. Make sure you call the service at exactly 9:30 every morning. For the breakfast and lunch buffets, sit down by the sea - it's hotter where the food is served.

Melia Caribe Tropical!! =)

Choosing a resort was a very challenging decision! First of all, I'm only 20 so it was my first time choosing a trip that included my boyfriend and I! After reading some reviews, the decision-making didn't seem to get any easier & some of my questions remained un-answered. Therefore, I have decided to make it easier for those of you who are facing the same question I faced: which resort to pick?!Melia Caribe Tropical is a beautiful, beautiful resort. I still remember thinking that every day; "this is soooo pretty!!" Eventually I would just say it to myself. The staff is marvelous! Welcoming and if you have an excursion and can't make reservations they work around that! There's tons of activities to do! Scuba diving at the pool is free!! The beach is calm & the pool on the Caribe side is beautiful! THERE IS NO NEED TO UPGRADE TO ROYAL SERVICE like I previously thought. The service is wonderful! I'll tell you all some of the fun activities my boyfriend and I did: Scuba diving, Parasailing (1 of my fav's), Saona Island Discovery (the ride there was fun! You dance & drink!), & a club called IMAGINE outside of the resort, we climbed a wall (1 of those with rocks on it! It was very challenging but fun!)...There was an amazing Michael Jackson show & a beach party I'll never forget! The restaurants were pretty good but if unpleased, you always had the option of eating at the Buffet! Make sure to take lotsssss of sunscreen!!!! We went from Aug 1-Aug 6 & the weather was beautiful despite a few late showers! The Orbitz people were pretty organized. [...] picked us up when they were suppose to for our excursions as well as for our ride back to the airport!! Speaking of which, once you step off that plane you will feel welcomed!I am Dominican yet this was my first time at a resort in the Dominican Republic...& despite how hard it was to choose between Melia and others, I wouldn't change Melia for a thing in the world! From the minute you arrive... you'll find yourself appreciating the beauty of it all!It is important to go on vacation with an open and relaxed mind. Be aware that things don't always go 100% as they are planned but this doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing! Make the best of your vacation! I know that my boyfriend and I were able to overlook the ity bity imperfections!!

If you're a party person don't get discouraged by the hotel's club; those tend to be small at every resort you go to. For $29 you can experience a night at Imagine! Its a cave-club. Yes, its a cave!! Truly unforgettable!
