HOTEL WITHOUT A BEACH

THE BEACH OF THE HOTEL IS BEAUTIFUL, BUT WHAT GOOD DOES IT MAKE IF YOU CAN`T JUMP IN THE WATER BECAUSE OF THE ROCKS!!! YES, THE LOCATION IS GREAT, BUT IF YOU ARE IN AN ISLAND IN THE CARIBBEAN, WOULDN`T YOU THINK THAT THE BEACH WITH WARM WATER IS A PLUS? WELL, NOT FOR THIS HOTEL, BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO BE WALKING WITH SANDALS TO AVOID THE ROCKS OR CORAL, BESIDE THE MARINE LIFE THEY WARN ABOUT, SUCH AS A DEALY STONE FISH! EXCELLENT LOCATION, BEAUTIFUL PREMISES, AVERAGE ROOM, TERRIBLE BEACH!

Dirty, buggy, and insecure

Marriott is really milking the property. In my opinion, it should be de-flagged. Upgraded room was very dirty including wet towels with fecal matter. Don't know how long since floors were cleaned. Toilet didn't work, Deadbolt was never fixed despite reports to Engineering. Food is actually very good. FD staff is courteous and efficient. We were there during dry season and mosquitoes were ubiquitous. Wet season must be frightening. I wouldn't recommend this property to anyone.

Rooms need major updating. Great location, great snorkling,

We just got back yesterday (2/5/14) from a 4 night stay at the Marriott. Beach: This hotel is really great for snorkling. Beautiful beach and pool. We snorkled right off the beach in shallow waters and you can go a little deeper but I was amazed at the beautiful reef. I couldn't get enough of it. Food: We didn't try any of the restaurants because I read very poor reviews. We ate mostly in town. There is very limtied local food in the area. If you are looking for local flavors, it will be a challenge. Food is not cheap by any means. The average price of a meal for 1 person is about $30 USD, unless you eat at a fast food chain. Transportation: Renting a car is highly recommended. It cost about $35/ day and reserve in advance because they do run out. Taxi fares cost about $15 one way to the downtown area and it's about a 10 minute ride. Rooms: The Marriott rooms need major updating. I have stayed at a lot of Marriotts and these rooms do not live up to the standards of a Marriott hotel. Shower curtains need to go. Rooms and bathrooms need major renovations.

There was one place that had local food. It's called Plasa Bieu. It's actually a food court where the locals eat. It's not a fancy place, infact is looks a little run down, but we enjoy the local experience and we didn't get sick.

Lovely spot for family or couples.

Starting with the great architectural design of the hotel, we were greeted by a friendly, knowledgeable staff. There are different restaurants and a gift shop within the hotel and within walking distance to a couple other restaurants. The pool is beautiful and large enough to accommodate many people. The rooms are clean and the bed is very comfortable. The cleaning staff are good at replacing soap, shampoo, etc.

Ok for the beach, but not quite Marriott

Ideally, when you go to the beach or a tropical island, you don't intend to spend a lot of time in the room. However, when you go for a brand like Marriott, you have an expectation of consistency, regardless of your destination. I think that there were probably very nice rooms in this hotel that had been renovated or updated, but ours was not one of them. It was Ok for staying at the beach - met the basic necessities, but by Marriott standards, the room itself was below par. The room - the room was outdated. We did not spring for a deluxe view, and instead had a view of the back of a hedge. Granted, that was full disclosure having not spent the extra money to have a view of the beach. However, if you were tall enough to see over the hedge, there was a nice view of a whirlpool and the water. It was an easy walk to the beach chairs. The room itself was shabby and dated. The bed was nice, but still worn. The shower was the most unusual I have ever seen - the shower head was perpendicular to the tub. I'm not sure who came up with that. The soaps, shampoos, etc., were not the Bath and Body Works brand that you normally find at a Marriott. The television only received about 20 channels, and some of those were special Marriott/Island channels. Despite the overall shabbiness, everything was clean. The room served its purpose, I suppose. Again, the point is not the sit around in the room. The staff - the front desk staff was friendly for the island's standards. Most places people scarcely acknowledged you. The Marriott staff, including the front desk people, the porters, the maintenance folks, etc., were helpful and seemed to recognize lost tourists with no clue. We appreciated that. The casino - we went into the casino, and it was just smoky and dead. I wasn't impressed. There was an offer to get $50 back on what you lose, but it is paid as Casino credits and it was hard to get someone to talk to us about it. Overall, not my bag, but others might be interested. They do give you free drinks, so if it's worth it, go for it. The restaurants/food - There are four restaurants at the hotel. There is a fancy schmancy place called Portofino that we did not attend due to the unimpressive menu. The Emerald Lounge is by far the best restaurant at the hotel that we used. The bartender was friendly remembered us when we came back, and offered helpful suggestions. The pizza is very good there. The Viola Delicatessen was a combination coffee shop/gift shop. For a hotel gift shop, the food prices were not astronomical, and this was a great place to grab something for breakfast without being weighed down by that heavy breakfast buffet. The point is to get to the beach, right? The Board Room is the beachfront restaurant. We attended a special "barbecue on the beach" which consisted of mediocre food which was just heated up on the grill, rather than actually cooked on it. It wasn't that good. I also tried to get drinks at the Board Room a couple of times and despite being the only patron, I had to wait while the bartender checked her phone for a while. The swim up bar in the pool actually managed to have worse service. We went there for dinner and the food (sushi and caesar salad) somehow was subpar and the server was much more interested in talking with her friends than serving us. The beach - Again, the reason why you're here. The beach is pretty fantastic. There are others on the island that might be better, but they are far away (need a rental car) or else charge a fee to get in. This is a great beach right in your back yard, which is not only good for swimming, but also has great snorkeling. We snorkeled the tug boat and some other spots on the island, but I think I saw some of the best casual snorkeling right here at the hotel. This is why you are here, and this is why the hotel is worthwhile. Bottom line - Pay for the better view, hope for updated fixtures in the room. Eat at the Emerald Lounge, and SNORKEL as much as you can.

Money-saving tip: In Hotel

The hotel has a twice-daily shuttle into town for free. You have to reserve beginning at 4 p.m. the previous day for the morning shuttle (returns at 12) or 2 p.m. shuttle (returns at 6). There really isn't much more to do in town than one or two of these trips (touristy shopping or very high end stores). Grab the afternoon shuttle, shop, have dinner at the waterfort arches, and take a taxi back for half the price.

A Weekend at the Curanao Marriott

Hotel was great. Service was excellent . There are several restaurants in the Hotel and there are also several very nice restaurants which are a short walk away from Hotel There's a Casino in the hotel lobby if you want to play and a sports bar. Hotel is well situated with lots of nice beach front Also a lot of close in reefs great for snorkeling or diving. great sunset view from the pool in the evening. If you want to do diving or sailing check on it early seems the don't sail everyday and things do get booked Hotel is a 10 min ride to Willemstad which has lots shopping and some very nice restaurants that are right on the water.

My experience did not start well. When I arrived on Monday 26 after a 3 hour travel connection delay I was advised that there was no reservation on record for me. Hotels reservation personnel however gave me a room using my credit card as security for payment. It took some time to resolve this issue with the agent. Despite this lack luster start, which was not the fault of the hotel, all members of the Marriott team were very accommodating and made my first stay in Curacao enjoyable.
