Good Value, good rate for the amenities
The rate was very good. It allowed me to stay at a hotel that had all the amenities of a large chain full service hotel at a very reasonable price. I would stay there again.

Tricky Location, Excellent service
The rooms were comfortable and pretty, a lot of amenities for the price. Breakfast was included and excellent and the service unbelievable! The staff answered all our questions (that were many)with patience, courtesy and clarity and not for their advantage (moneywise). They even did us some favors beyond their responsibilities and refuse to accept a tip...I was pleasantly surprised. The hotel is located in an area far from downtown and nightlife, so unless you are ready to take the buses or to pay for taxis it is not recommended. But if you want to spend some nights prior and after visiting other areas of Costa Rica and want to be relatively close to the airport, it is definitively worth the money.

Excellent hotel in good neighourhood
The Barcelo Palma Real hotel was an excellent hotel. It was in a very nice and residential neighourhood close to city. It was also close to and very accessible to Airpport. Room had minibars with different types of food and drink item which was very helpful. The restaurant was serving excellent food. Staffs were very friendly and we felt very safe and welcome at Barcelo Palma Real.

SEWAGE LEAK IN NOV. 2009 — SAY BARCEL-NO
DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL! [...]This hotel is not a value — it's an unsanitary headache!I stayed at this hotel in November 2009 — on November 26, there was a SEWAGE LEAK throughout the hotel! I turned on the bathwater in my tub and it was BROWN! That is absolutely DISGUSTING! Reception didn't seem to understand that this was a health hazard — they said it would take a half hour to fix the hotel-wide sewage pipe problem. But two hours later, nothing had changed, so I decided to check out early (I should have never stayed at Barcel-no in the first place.) This was the worst hotel I've ever stayed at. Aside from the disgusting, deplorable sewage problem, the front desk staff was inexperienced and slow in responding to simple requests such as, "Can you send the housekeeper to clean my room?" An absolutely terrible, terrible experience. Do not stay here!

Great small hotel with friendly service
Had a few drinks, had a good, filling breakfast, rested. Close to a churrascaria, a family diner, and Subway. The park close by is not a great park but is a good place for people watching - particularly Costa Ricans and their families. The hotel is in a quieter, residential neighborhood.

Short walk from hotel
Go to the churrascaria if you like steak (Brazilian style). The family diner (Pollo * something..) is a great value and with good meal combos. Go past the churrascaria, cross the highway and turn left...go down the road to a shopping mall on the right. There's a superstore where you can buy coffee, souvenirs, etc... much cheaper than the airport. There's also a bar & restaurant (King's) although we did not try that for want of time.

Average hotel, nothing special
A very average experience overall. The bellhops were very friendly and helpful, parking our car, checking our flight online for us, carrying our bags. The waitor at the restaurant however ignored us completely after we got our food. We sat for a good twenty mntes after we finished, waiting for dessert. The food was average at best to boot. As far as the room, it was nice and actually a better room than we had reserved. Apparently there is a casino in the hotel but it was not easy to find. And the gift shop was closed for construction. The complimentary breakfast was quite mediocre and barely edible. Overall an average hotel that could have been better. Glad we only stayed one night.

Solid Hotel Experience
We had a very good experience. The hotel was clean. The service was excellent, and the rooms were spacious. There is also free internet and a business center that could be useful for travelers who need to keep in touch with the rest of the world. It deserves mention that while the rooms were adequately clean, they were not spotless - we had a small gecko in ours. More squeamish guests may want to keep this in mind. We don't hold it against the hotel, though - the climate is conducive to such visitors and geckos don't hurt anyone. On the whole, this hotel is worth staying at if you're going to be in San Jose. I would stay again.

Short drive from hotel
There is a restaurant, Mirador Valle Azul, with a gorgeous view of San Jose not too far from the hotel. The restaurant serves Italian food, and can be reacehd at (506) 2254-6281. The web site is www.restaurantevalleazule. The dress code appears to be smart casual. The ambiance and service are excellent. The place is quiet and would be a nice place for a romantic dinner. My friend had a seafood dish - talapia and shrimp - and I ordered, on the waiter's recommendation, a ribeye with black truffle sauce. The food was the best we had in San Jose, but (based on American dining standards) would be no higher than the high end of average. The flaw appears to be with the ingredients used and not the chef. For example, although the ribeye was well-cooked (perfectly medium rare) and the sauce was delicious, the steak itself was neither as tender nor as marbled as I would have hoped for the price. Similarly, the talapia was cooked perfectly and was quite tasty, but the shrimp were slightly overcooked or had been frozen and improperly thawed. It bears further mention, however, that the chef clearly takes pride in his or her work and prepared a complimentary chicken croquet, served with a subtly spicy marinara sauce, which was very tasty. In short, I recommend this place for couples looking for a quiet evening out or for any diners who are looking for an excellent view of San Jose. The cost is expensive for San Jose, but moderately high for the U.S., about $50 per person before alcohol and tax (which is 13%).
