Luxury landmark hotel near Beijing’s Forbidden City

A four-year, $35-million renovation, finished in 2006, completed the transformation of the somber former Palace Hotel into one of Beijing's most refined hotels. The Peninsula's trademark fleet of Rolls Royce Phantoms (plus BMW 7 series) whisk guests from the airport to the hotel. The 44,000-square foot Peninsula Spa by ESPA offers dozens of treatments. Jing and Huang Ting restaurants provide sumptuous visual and culinary feasts. Guests can reach the Forbidden City within a 15-minute walk.

Highlights
  • One of Beijing's premier luxury hotels
  • 44,000-square-foot Peninsula Spa by ESPA
  • Huang Ting and Jing restaurant provide sumptuous visual and culinary feasts

Rooms

The 525 rooms -- 57 of them suites -- whose Features section looks this way in the manuscrip lean toward simple elegance, with earth-tone colors and streamlined furniture. All rooms feature a white marble bathroom, 42-inch flat-screen television, CD and DVD players, free high-speed Internet, and Wi-Fi.

Dining

The two main restaurants capture the essence of old and new Beijing. Huang Ting, which serves traditional Chinese cuisine, resembles a nobleman's courtyard house. The wooden door and elaborate screens came from demolished homes in Shanxi Province. Jing serves fusion fare that often ranks among the city's best meals. Jing's dining room glows with red glass curtains, white stone walls, and a stainless steel open kitchen.

Recreation

The 44,000-square-foot Peninsula Spa by ESPA offers an indulgent Purva Karma four-handed synchronized massage. The fitness center features Life Fitness machines with individual televisions and an indoor heated 20-meter (66-foot) swimming pool. The staff includes physical trainers as well as a nutritional advisor. Guests can opt for a chauffeured escort to the airport in one of the hotel's trademark Rolls Royce Phantoms.

Great location and service, but not modern.

This is a top tier luxury hotel chain, located at the heart of the bustling high-end commercial area in Beijing. The staff is excellent, courteous and efficient. The hotel is quite old, though, and that starts to show. The mattress was sagging, overdue for a change. The bathroom was outdated, lighting is controlled by an electronic panel on one side of the bed, but in a non-intuitive arrangement. So, this is still a Peninsula and you will get all the quality service and perks associated with that, but do not expect a state-of-the-art luxury hotel.

Good stay- great location. room is clean and comfortable. But like many hotels in Beijing, they could be a bit updated. Breakfast was good. Overall I would recommend it if you want to stay in the Wangfujing Area.

Concierge is my hero!

When our flight was unexpectedly cancelled and we couldn't contact any airline representative online or by phone, the concierge got through and booked our new flight. Given that we would have breached our visa if delayed, I can't be more grateful of this exceptional service! And, ps-- the pool was immaculate and serene. An oasis in the chaos of Beijing.

Decent Hotel in heart of Beijing

I would say that the staff is certainly the best thing this hotel has going for it, very professional and eager to assist. With that said room lacked and stocked mini bar and the in-room dining menu was very limited. Room size was good with a nice sized office area. I typically stay at the Grand Hyatt and figured I would try a few new places since their rates jumped over $300. In summary I think this is a decent value.

GREAT VALUE AT WEB PRICE

My very comfortable standard room was a bit on the small side but well appointed. Concierge services were five star. Breakfast which was not included in the room rate was expensive, however, food selection and quality were very good. Location of hotel with expensive shops both within and surrounding the hotel lobby made the experience seem like staying in a hotel within a mall.

Beijing Dec 2013

So I have stayed at other Peninsulas like the one in HK so I had high expectations coming in. The lobby is great and has many tea/coffee shops, as well as a bunch of high end shopping.. I believe LV has a store and so does a few watch companies... breakfast was also very good but expensive (160 yuan) ... the room itself was old... furniture from the 90s and even the TV was pretty small... I was a bit disappointed ... it certainly needs renovation inside the rooms. The staff was friendly and helpful and the location is SICK... near the shopping at Wangfujing... near the subways... can get a cab easily.... Although alot of taxi drivers have NO IDEA where BEIJING PENINSULA HOTEL is.... 8/10 cabs I took during this time did NOT know where this hotel is... I'm surprised its not famous in Beijing....

Didn't Earn Its 5 Star Rating.....

Location, Location, Location.....excellent location and high end shopping at your doorstep. Very nice. I've stayed at 5 star hotels across SE Asia (expat living in the Philippines) so I'm comparing this hotel to those standards. My 10 & 12 year old daughters and I spent a week in Beijing site seeing...touristy stuff. They loved the pool and I liked (not loved) the gym. We visited in late Nov so off season allowed us to have the pool to ourselves during the evening (tip here, off season is nice but can be very cold and windy...defined as nov/dec). The food was decent but nothing spectacular and doesn't compare to a typical Shang buffet. My real concern was the staff. I didn't expect fantastic English skills in Beijing; I did enough research to understand they would be limited. BUT, when the staff at an international hotel doesn't speak English well enough to get you a hot tea or Tabasco sauce it becomes detrimental to the experience. I think the wait staff was intimidated by my English speaking daughters and I which resulted in subpar service at the resto each morning. The cooks serving you omelets and other made to order food items were almost rude. Not a good experience. At other 5 star hotels the staff learns my name, pours my drink of choice, and makes a true effort to check on me. Not here....so many opps for customers service were missed. So, would I recommend the Penn. Sure, it’s a good hotel but was missing the character and personal touch required to make it an exceptional stay.
