He has released two albums independently, with High Top Mountain in 2013 and Metamodern Sounds in Country Music in 2014. His third album, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, was his first major label release through Atlantic Records. This album earned him a nomination for Album of the Year and granted him the honor of Best Country Album at the 59th Grammy Awards. Simpson’s fourth album, released in 2019, was called Sound & Fury. Simpson described his latest album as a “sleazy, steamy rock’n’roll record.”

Some of his most popular singles have been songs like "Life of Sin," "Turtles All the Way Down," and "Long White Line." Sturgill Simpson concerts bring together country fans of all generations, as he bridges the gap between classic country sound and contemporary issues.
