About The Last Ship

Led by the music of former Police frontman and musical Renaissance Man Sting and writing by John Logan and Brian Yorkey, The Last Ship is a moody and gritty examination of the modernization of the world informed by Sting's childhood living in a shipbuilding town on the coast of England. The music is heavily influenced by Sting's deep study of world and folk styles, and the rough and tumble characters strike true to life of what might be found in a working class shipbuilding village. In 2014, The Last Ship debuted on Broadway winning Best Score and Best Orchestration Tony awards for its stunning music, and went on to feature Sting himself in the lead role for a limited run at the end of 2014. Consisting of almost all original material from Sting, The Last Ship is his first foray into musical theater and also spawned an accompanying album of Sting himself performing stripped-down versions of songs from the musical. A true-to-life and gritty depiction of the working class with historical accuracy and drama is not standard fare for Broadway, but Sting's musical involvement and effective direction make this a must-see production in the musical theater canon.
