Early Life and Rise to Fame

R Kelly was born as Robert Sylvester Kelly on January 8, 1967 in Chicago, Illinois. Growing up with a single mother and three other siblings, Kelly had the bare minimum. His mother was also a singer, and at the age of eight he joined his Baptist church choir. Also, at the age of eight Kelly got his first girlfriend named Lulu, who tragically drowned after a fight broke out near a creek with older children. Kelly credits Lulu as being his first ever musical inspiration. In 1981, his music teacher convinced him to sing a Stevie Wonder song for the talent show. Kelly was initially upset about having to miss his basketball game to perform, but after singing on the stage he realized how gifted he truly was. As a teenager him and some of his friends formed the band MGM (Musically Gifted Men), only to disband after releasing one single. In 1991 Kelly became a member of a new band called Public Announcement with the group signing a record deal later that year.

Kelly first came to the public eye in 1989 when MGM won a talent TV show called Big Break. In 1992 Public Announcement released their debut album entitled Born into the 90’s. Later that year the band toured to promote the album but in the January of 1993 R Kelly announced that he would be leaving the group to embark on a solo venture. His first solo album was released in November of that year, earning him his first number one hit, “Bump N’ Grind”. After the release of his album, Kelly became highly sought after to write and produce music for other artists. Some of the more notable being Aaliyah with her album Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number and Michael Jackson’s final hit “You Are Not Alone”, which earned him a Grammy nomination. In 1995 he released his second studio album and received great praise from critics for changing his lyrics to become more emotional and vulnerable. Songs like "I Believe I Can Fly" and "If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time" have made him one of the most well-known contemporary R&B and hip-hop artists of all time. For this reason, R Kelly tickets are a hot commodity.

Though touring now takes up most of the artist's time, Kelly wears multiple hats, so to speak. He has played professional basketball and appeared in multiple television shows. He also works hard to help others make it in the music industry with his record label Rockland Records.
