About Motown - The Musical

“Motown: The Musical” tells the story of Berry Gordy and the Detroit musical phenomenon called Motown Records. The Motown musical Broadway show is based on Gordy’s 1994 autobiography, “To Be Loved.”

The story begins as Motown Records is in decline, after Gordy had lost many of the superstars that he helped create. Through flashback, viewers are taken back to the beginning with a young Gordy who is still searching for his calling. After successfully writing and selling a few songs, he realizes that the real money is in producing records.

“Motown: The Musical” packs over 40 chart-topping hits from the 1960s and 70s in one show. The hit songs highlight the story, such as when actors break into “Money (That’s What I Want)” when Gordy asks his family for a loan to start his record company. The story also touches on his relationship with Diana Ross and other key events in the ground-breaking record label’s history.
