Ditching the corporate life

Growing up on Long Island, Steven Markowitz started performing as a kid, rapping to entertain his friends. By the time he graduated university and began working at Google, his music career was poised to take off. Soon the strain of both working fulltime and trying to build his fanbase became too much, and he quit his job to fully embrace his persona as Hoodie Allen. A breakthrough moment came when he released "You Are Not a Robot," featuring clips from "I Am Not a Robot" by Marina and the Diamonds. His 2010 mixtape, Pep Rally, was a massive online hit and, along with 2011's Leap Year, enabled him to launch a headlining tour. The following year he released his debut EP, which hit No. 1 on iTunes and No. 10 on the Billboard 200 chart. In 2014 his first full-length album, People Keep Talking, came out, and Hoodie Allen went on a world tour. He is a prolific artist, releasing his second and third albums in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
