From local Chicago rapper to award-winning artist
Born in Chicago, Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr. started rapping when he was just a teenager. His debut album came out in 1992, which is when he started using the moniker Common Sense. The record garnered a devoted underground fan base, which grew with the release of his 1994 album Resurrection. In 1999 Common moved to New York City and began collaborating with the Soulquarians, a musical collective. The following year he unleashed Like Water for Chocolate, the album that launched him to mainstream success. Since then, Common has continued to release critically acclaimed smash hit records. He is a dazzlingly decorated artist, with an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for "Glory" from the Selma soundtrack, BET Hip Hop Awards, and a handful of Grammy Awards. Common has collaborated with other megastars like Kanye West, The Roots, and Lauryn Hill. He's acted in movies and TV shows, as well as published his memoir.
