IZOD’s IndyCar Series ranks at the top level of America’s open-wheel racing. The owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Tony George, founded the current championship. He founded it in 1996 to be a competition to CART, which is recognized as the Indy Racing League (IRL). You can find your Indy Car Series tickets for sale here.
Due to CART’s continued reliance on overseas drivers and expensive machinery, George wanted to create a less expensive alternative. In 2008, a merge occurred between IndyCar Series and Champ Car World Series, previously known as CART. It is sanctioned by IndyCar. IndyCar Series Vehicle Specifications
In 1997, George stipulated new technical rules for production-based engines and cars that were less expensive. This move successfully outlawed the CART turbocharged engines and chassis that were the foundation of the Indianapolis 500 for many years.
In 2003, the rules changed requiring chassis makers to be authorized by the league prior to building cars. Before this, any party interested could build a car; as long as, the rules were met and it was available to consumers at the price mandated by the league. Interesting Facts
In 1996, Buzz Calkins and Scott Sharp tied in the final standings. They were declared co-champions. Sharp was winless, whereas, Calkins had one win. However, no tiebreakers were in place at the time.
In 2006, Dan Wheldon and Sam Hornish Jr. tied in the final standings as well. This time, however, IndyCar had a tiebreaker in place. Hornish was able to secure the championship because he had more victories than Wheldon, during that season.
In 2009, IndyCar.com confirmed that Danica Patrick’s achievement of being named the Most Popular Driver in 2008 was the fifth consecutive time she won that award.
In 2011, the season was expected to end at Las Vegas, but IndyCar abandoned the race due to the death of Dan Wheldon from an earlier crash.
A vote by the members on the official IndyCar Nation website awarded Dan Wheldon the Posthumously award. This was the first time that a part-time driver was given the award.
In 2007, the league began advertising 100 percent fuel grade ethanol, making them the first competitive series to use renewable fuel. For the races held in the U.S., the mixture is 2 percent gasoline and 98 percent ethanol. While methanol causes chemical burns should it be exposed to someone’s skin, ethanol does not.
