Business Trip

I was dissatisfied in that the Xanadu hotel seemed to be neglected for some time. The rooms were not updated but marginally ... clean. The air conditioning and heating system was through the wall type and very noisy. The hotel staff were very friendly and cooperative. However, the hotel facilities were not operational at this time. I could not make international phone calls nor was the hotel internet system operational. As I was there on business I could not communicate as I needed to. Driving to and from the hotel from outside was confusing. However a good hide-a-way for vacationers. I found that I had to leave the hotel after the first night.

Lovely Beach
Rigoberto Aug 3, 2007
The hotel has a great private beach. The first room had a nonfunctioning T.V. and Phone and the next room had a hairball ... larger than life that was clogging up the shower (it was the most disgusting thing ever).

Quiet Location, Some Will Love It, Some Will Not

The Xanadu has been left behind by development at Lucaya. There are few people staying here compared to the hustle and bustle ... of Lucaya. This will delight some and upset others. Personally I thought it was fine. I stayed here for 4 nights in April 2007 with my 13 year old son. Purpose of the trip was for scuba diving. There is an on site dive shop that has a good reputation which I agree with for the most part. Bear in mind the dive shop is a separate business that is not part of the hotel. The only thing I did not like about the dive shop was that the scheduling was a little hit or miss. We arrived on Saturday and wanted to dive Sunday. But Sunday really is a slow day for them and we were the only customers, so they did not go out. Instead we went snorkeling at Paradise Cove which was really excellent. We spent the whole day there and saw an eagle ray, southern ray, barracuda, parrot fish, grunts, etc. Anyway back to the hotel. The room was large and clean. No complaints. The restaurant was fine but a little understaffed. So service could be slow. But remember you are on island time and chill out! The beach is absolutely beautiful and nearly unoccupied. We loved it. There is a beach bar and grill that serves good basic food (burgers, grouper sandwich, crab cakes). The staff are the same that man the bar in the hotel. So at 5pm they start to shut down the beach bar and by 6 they open up the inside bar. Inside the lobby area there is free wifi. We used this extensively. If you don't have a laptop they have a computer room where you can rent access for $10/hr. The only problem with the wifi was that the front desk staff know nothing about it. One day the power had gone out temporarily and I could tell from my laptop that their router needed to be rebooted. I offered to do it for them but they wouldn't let me near their gear. Understandable I guess, but they didn't get anyone to fix it so consequently there was no wifi the rest of that day for anyone. The pool area was nice and clean. The hotel is remote from eveything else like shops, bars and restaurants. Taxis are expensive (typically $15 for 15 minutes) so if you plan to get around a lot you probably want a car. This aspect will be a big factor in whther you are happy here or not. For us it was just fine. I overheard many people complaining about every little thing. Just bear in mind this is not a 5 star place, it's cheaper than many other options. If you are the kind of person that gets upset when everything is not precisely like you are used to, then this is not the place for you! My advice is, chill out, have a Corona and go sit on the beach.
