The good and the less than good!
Jim Nov 12, 2009
With an occupancy rate of 4%, it was very quiet. That said, the restaurant was closed and there was no room service. I ... stayed there two nights and only ran into the desk clerk and one maintenance person the whole stay. Construction is going on the neighborhood. I guess occupancy and services shall increase when the area settles down. Quiet and restful, but lack of services. Excellent rooms with flat screen TV. Remotes do not seem to work properly. In-room coffee makers quirky.

6-7 blocks to the Gateway Arch. Lots of great restaurants to walk to! Easy to get to the city's public tram to Union Station, Bush Stadium, and the River Front, as well as the airport if you don't want to get a car. Next time, we probably won't get a rental car. If the weather's nice, you don't need it. Great location.

The staff was very courteous and friendly. The room was comfortable and very clean. The hotel is currently undergoing some ... renovations and I trust that it will be up to par with other historic Wyndham hotels when completed. Parking was available at another nearby hotel at about $16 dollars a day. This garage was convenient but not immediately adjacent to the hotel.

I expected better from Wyndham
well-seasoned traveler Aug 16, 2009
I stay at hotels 12 nights/month for my job. We chose this hotel for location and rooftop pool, as I was traveling with kids ... (a fun get-away), also because we trust the Wyndam name. The location was great for walking to local attractions; however the pool was closed. In fact, it's closed for the season, and wasn't open for the whole 2009 season, due to construction. When pressed, the hotel told me that guests are allowed to use the neighboring hotel's pool, at the Renaissance Grand. Upon looking up that hotel on Orbitz, I noticed the same room type was only $10 more per night. Hmmm... Also, while the Wyndam is a well-known historical hotel, the common areas have not been cleaned in quite some time. There was construction type trash on the floors by the vending machines, and dirt and mildew looking areas on the floor boards in hallways and public restrooms. Right when we checked in, one of my daughters asked, "Why is there a hair curler under the desk---with hair in it??" Ewww! There are maintenance issues as well. I stood in 3" of water during my shower each day, and there were ceiling tiles missing in the lobby and in the workout room. Our stateroom was nicely decorated, and the bed was very, very comfortable. The hotel front desk people were awesome--very friendly. In summary, my expectations were at the Wyndam level, but the hotel did not produce.

good location, but difficult access
supernurse Aug 3, 2009
Housekeeping came to our door 4 times to clean in the morning... they had on their list that we had already checked out, it ... was relatively annoying. Also, they could not find my reservation and I got double charged for the room. However, when found on my credit card, they immediately corrected the error. The parking deck we had to use was for another hotel because of construction, so we had to lug our luggage a long way.

ok place to stay
Shawn Jul 29, 2009
I have stayed here on several occassions but this is the 1st time the hotel was busy. Our room was missing the TV in the ... bedroom. The bracket and cords were there...but no TV. We could hear people in the hall and it was difficult enough to get an elevator that we took the stairs. Which by the way are scary. The stairway was definitely meant as a fire escape only! Also I was looking forward to a swim but the pool is under construction - that would have been nice to know when I booked. It is great for an old hotel and is an awesome place to stay usually but I think it was just busy enough to be annoying. I never noticed so much noise before.

The hotel is undersome renovations, so parking was a bit tricky, but we ended up with good spots each time. The city was ... amazing, I understand that there has been a lot of effort up into renovation, which definately show. I would stay at the Mayfair on my next visit.

Ugly step-sister to the hotel next door
Lisa May 21, 2009
The Mayfair is the ugly step-sister to the Renaissance Grand hotel next door. My room at the Mayfair was adequate and met my ... needs. The staff advised me not to walk on the street after dark, and not to get into a cab alone. It was nice to be warned that the area was not safe. The place was dirty! It looked as though someone had spilled something on the elevator doors (all 3 of the elevators); none were cleaned during the week that I was there. It's a great, old Victorian building, but if they are "restoring" it, the owners have a looong was to go. It's very dark. I never knew if the restaurant was open - never saw anyone in it. Little things were annoying - having to ask for toilet paper - having a dresser in the closet that prevented me from hanging up my clothes - being locked out of my room on the day after I checked in because "the computer" thought I was staying only one night. I would not stay there again unless I had to. At least I know why I got such a deal. One more thing. There are no convenience stores, gas stations, grocery stores, etc in the area, and all of the restaurants on Washington Street are expensive. If you want to live dangerously, there is a little (expensive) grocery/deli store 6 blocks away to the south, and a Hardee's 5-6 blocks to the east.

The lady at the front desk was not friendly at all. I checked in at 12:30 A.M. on Wensday right after I left the airport. The ... lady at the front desk charged me for Tuesday-Friday when I really only stayed Wensday- Friday. It was old and scary...I would not walk in the hall ways by myself. The top of the bed was dirty and there was no screen on the window...a little freaky I'd say. I was woken up in the morning due to construction outside. The man in the lobby gave me attitude when I asked for clean towels. I would not suggest any of my friends or family to stay here.
