Western Village Motel Sparks, Nevada
Crossroads Oct 30, 2009
We live only 90 miles away but were going to be in Reno for one night on a business trip and needed a place that allowed ... dogs. Western Village is in Sparks, the sister city of Reno. It had some good and some bad reviews, but we decided to take a chance. After all, what can you expect for $34 a night? What a pleasant surprise!. The staff couldn't have been friendlier; and check-in is 1 p.m. rather than the usual 3 or 4. The room was large and clean and obviously recently remodeled: New carpet and dresser with deep drawers, a desk, large TV. Best of all, we were in a non-smoking wing and had a view of the beautiful marina. The king-size bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was small, but certainly adequate and upgraded. One reviewer complained that there was no hair dryer. True. But how hard is it to pack your own? They provided plenty of towels, extra nice soap, organic shampoo and lotion--in other words, they gave some thought to providing nice amenities. There is no pool, but that wasn't an issue with us. The marina is so lovely with the sun rising over the mountains and the ducks and geese swimming in its reflection. There are loads of restaurants and shopping nearby. Sparks has really grown in a good way. One reviewer said the casino wasn't much and had a sign that said No Weapons. This isn't Las Vegas; its a small casino in a small, Western city (I suspect the sign is a humorous poke at the Old West--leave your guns at the door, cowboy type of thing, going along with the name Western Village). It's a favorite for locals to go to and feel comfortable. We definitely recommend Western Village and will stay there again. In fact, with their low rate, we can afford to go there more often.

There is a new shopping center about a mile down the street (not highway) called Legends. The anchor store is Scheels, "the world's largest sporting goods" store. The artwork is worth the trip. The store is surrounded by huge bronze statues of various sports, such as a fly fisherman, a skate boarder in mid flip, etc. Beautiful!

We left for a quick getaway to Reno and the rib cook off. Booked a little late. So this was one of our only options. There ... was nothing special about this motel. It was not even connected to the casino. Which may be a good thing. Nothing very special about the casino. They have a sign reminding people not to bring their firearms. They must have a little problem. It was ok just for the night. Very basic. What can you expect for $50.

this hotel was ok, reserved 2 rooms weeks ahead of time and when we arrived, they couldn't give us the rooms next to each ... other. Requested no smoking, one of the rooms was a smoking room, the other was a handicap. They charge you a deposit for the remote control, $50.00. The clerk told my relative one thing and the other clerk told me something else, they rules change. Room was not clean, needed to be vacuumed. No coffee pot in room, coffee shop didn't open until 8am, drove down the block to McDonalds. No hairdryer, if you stay bring everything. Next time I'll stay at a larger hotel.
