Waimea Canyon-the Grand Canyon of the Pacific runs north to south on Kauai's western border. This magnificent canyon was formed by whipping winds, pelting rain and the incessant grinding of streams and rivulets that have chiseled the red bedrock to depths of 3,600 feet and expanses of 10 miles. Its beauty also lies in the incredible variety of color - moss green on top, followed by a strata of rusty reddish-brown, and then layers of grayish green and brownish grays, streaked with lines of solid coral and coral pink combinations. They all blend to create a beautiful canvas of colors on the serrated levels of rock.
You'll also see Koloa Town, where the first sugar plantation was founded in 1835, and Spouting Horn, a lava tube extending out to sea, with its open mouth on the rocky shore. Watch as the wave action causes a spotting phenomenon that can blow spumes high into the air, depending on surf conditions.
After a lunch stop, you'll board the riverboat at the Wailua Marina for a cruise on the only navigable river in the Hawaiian Islands. Your trip takes you up the river through dense tropical foliage, past settings reminiscent of centuries gone by. Upon docking, you will take a short walk to the Fern Grotto, a natural amphitheatre amid a beautiful tropical jungle setting, where delicate ferns form a wondrous ceiling of green. Here in this romantic setting, where Hawaiian Royalty were married, you'll be serenaded with the traditional Hawaiian Wedding Song.

The Waimea Canyon Tour with Fern Grotto Tour is available Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Pick up times are from 7:30am to 8:30am depending on your hotel location. The tour does not pick up from the Princeville area.
