We had a wonderful time on our trip to the island of Hawaii, and our stay at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott made it even ... better. The staff was so helpful, the rooms were so comfortable and very clean. Loved the balcony to enjoy coffee and pastries from the coffee shop downstairs every am. All in all, a perfect choice to celebrate 25 years!!

We had a wonderful stay. Blue Hawaiian Air for the helicopter was great, we took the two hour tour on the ecostar going over ... the lava flow and up the Hamakua Coast to see all the waterfalls. Watching sunset and star gazing at the observatory was owesome. Eating away from the hotel at restaurants that locals use was the best. Can't wait to visit again. Before going to Hawaii do your research so that you don't miss out on all the pearls of the island. Explore the island. We didn't have enough time to see the southern coast. You need a good 5-6 days to see most of the island. Use the snorkel gear that comes with the daily resort fee. We saw alot of fish and sea turtles. Make sure to swim out away from the beach area. Next time we would like to golf. Looked like the golf courses were very nice.

The hotel was beautiful with an open air lobby & wonderful infinity pool. Every night at sunset, one can stand on the balcony ... above the pool area and get a perfect view of the setting sun. The hotel has great snorkeling (when visibility is ideal)& plenty of sea turtles. Kilauea, kona, Waipi'o valley & the various beaches & lava tubes were all exciting. Kilauea was the most awesome experience I've ever had! I went to Oahu last year & it doesn't even compare to this trip. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Fabulous location with beautiful beach and three pools. Friendly and helpful staff. Good food in restaurant. Useful sundry ... shop in lobby. Not crowded. Clean. Short, easy, and interesting walks to another beach on south and towards the Hilton (crowded and no beach) on north. Shack on beach with friendly staff and very good snorkeling equipment included in the resort fee. Long distance calls, room internet access, and towel exchange also included in $20/day resort fee. Beautiful sunsets.

Great place. I would recommend this for families and for romantic vacations. If you plan to go out hiking or visiting lava ... sites and come back hungry better stock up on snacks and drinks beforehand. Everything closes by 11.It is at least a half hour drive to the nearest place you can get any food or drink. All in all a very pleasant stay. By the way, use the valet parking. It is only six dollars a day and nothing compared to what you would be spending the entire stay. Those folks who stay out in the hot sun can certainly use those valet dollars.

Queens shops are close by. Great Hotel
Cara Jul 22, 2009
My family really enjoyed this hotel. The room was the perfect size (double beds - one adult - two 15 year olds). The boys ... really enjoyed the pools, but were not so impressed with the beach. There are zero waves which killed their hopes of going boogie boarding. I wished I would have known that the attractions on the Hilo side were so far away - I would have stayed a couple nights on that side of the island. Also, we did not hear our neighbors - but could hear the noise in the hallways loud and clear. This was especially annoying when I laid down to take a nap and the cleaning crew was screaming up and down the hallways. The restaurant was very overpriced - so we chose not to eat there. Instead, we ate at the restaurants in the two outdoor shopping areas next to the Marriott. They were also pricey - but more reasonable than the hotel's restaurant. Be aware - the closest McDonalds is 40 minutes away. There is a small food court with Arbys and Dairy Queen - but other than that you will be paying a bit of food. We bought snacks, water, etc from the local grocery store which helped save money. I would avoid the luau at the Marriott - there must be a better one somewhere on the island. The food was okay - buffet style. The performers didn't seem to take it that seriously - though the host was fantastic. I would have been much happier using this time at the observatory. Also, be aware that the rental car companies do not allow you to take their cars on specific roads. The roads that lead to the observatory and South Point are off limits.
Traveler type: Family
This hotel is quite a distance from Volcano National Park and other attractions on that side of the island. Some may want to stay a night or two in Hilo or the park to hit all of the attractions over there - otherwise it is a good 2 1/2 hours drive one way.

Great location
kim35 Jul 20, 2009
I'd recommend this hotel to families, especially those with little kids, but not to couples. The location of this hotel is ... great and there were a lot of families there with little kids so while it was noisy for us and our older kids, it seemed family-friendly in general. Right on the beach with water sports rental facilities on the beach front. GREAT snorkeling too right in A-bay. There is also a really cool petroglyph field down the road. The location is also between Waimea, a great place to visit up north, and the busier, more crowded beach towns further south, and Kona. Down sides - this hotel is really nothing special as far as service - standard Marriott fare. They also charge "rental" fees for EVERYTHING; including ping pong paddles for a table they have by the pools. It made the whole experience feel more Wisconsin Dells then a Hawaii resort. Housekeeping was pretty bad too. The lobby and pool were very clean and maintained, but I felt like our room was never really cleaned. Also, avoid staying on higher floors - water pressure, including toilet flushing, is almost nil. Finally, if you don't want to be stuck at the resort for your entire trip, rent a car! This resort, while the beach front location is great, is pretty isolated from other towns and resorts on the coast. You cannot walk anywhere outside of the little resort shopping area.
Traveler type: Family
Food is expensive in Hawaii. Marriott has one hotel and the food was pretty good, but it's not any cheaper or more expensive then anywhere else on the island. To save some money, go to a local grocery store in Kona (NOT the grocery stores on the resort properties) and buy some fruit, lunch meat, bread, etc. for quick meals in your hotel room or on the road, otherwise you'll be spending hundreds a day in meals, depending on the size of your group.

The Island Gourmet in the Queen's Shopping Center was great for food, drinks and gifts. The hotel's bar was very expensive. Ask for the daily special. We didn't find out about it till the last day. We missed the poolside snack bar and bar. The restaurant had nightly specials, some of which were good, some of which were cut down from the regular menu items so were not that great. Location is on a nice beach and near many other great beaches. Pool area and views from balconies are everything you expect ... in a resort setting. Fitness area is adequate. An Okay Honeymoon Choice
The Honeymooners Jun 22, 2009
We spent five nights of our honeymoon at this hotel. Maybe we'd been spoiled by the previous two hotels we stayed in on the ... trip, but this property was a big letdown. Our "ocean view" room was on the third floor, smack behind two trees so that the only view we had of the ocean was a few peeks of blue through the leaves. The hotel is set so far back from the water that even rooms without obstructed views don't have amazing vistas. There was only one dining option on site and as we had expected, it was very expensive. The bar menu was good, though. We would have eaten there more often if they'd had more food choices. The business center charged a ridiculous amount of money to use the internet. The least expensive hotel of our trip offered free internet in the lobby, yet this far more expensive hotel charged an arm and a leg. The layout of our guestroom was awkward and it seemed like they spent too much money and effort on having decor that looked "different" instead of having decor that was functional. We were constantly finding ants in the room, including on our freshly changed linens. The best things about this hotel are the fact that the pools and hot tubs are open 24 hours so you can enjoy them any time. Also, we attended the luau that is offered twice a week and very much enjoyed the food, drinks, and entertainment. They did offer us each a complimentary glass of champagne when they found out that it was our honeymoon. We probably would not stay at this property again if we return to the Waikoloa area. Our stay at the Marriott resort in Lihue, Kauai was far better than our stay at this property. It surprised us that both properties were Marriotts. This one did not live up to the brand name at all.
