Pleasant room - oout of control partying
Disappointed Nov 22, 2009
The hotel is a W. Euro-chic - which I appreciate. The Saturday night scene was out of control. Wild party across the ... hallway - screaming until the wee small hours with no hotel security response. Could be heard anywhere on the floor.

The hotel was well located but missed some details that one expects from a W. Needs renovations. Bathrooms are very basic - ... something you would see at a 2 star. comfortable beds. There is no food and beverage available at the property. Staffing was lacking. Doorman rarely available to help hail a cab. The one shining light was the concierge Juan Santa Maria - excellent! He will get you in anywhere. We have stayed at other properties in same location that faired better with similar star rating. Would not go back.

Don't use the ridiculousely expensive valet parking, there is parking on the street which is free saturday night and sunday all day, and all other times, there is an indoor parking garage that is half a block away.

Although it was impeccably served, breakfast was terribly expensive. $42 for two orange juices, two coffees, and a bowl of granola with yogurt!

Great Midtown Hotel
Permanent Traveler Jul 31, 2009
It's a great hotel for midtown Manhattan. It's a W so the service is always great, but it's an older Manhattan building so ... some of the structure is dated. Best for young travelers who don't mind dance music pumping from the lobby until late at night.

Disappointing...
Moe Jul 6, 2009
Went to New York for July 4th weekend. expected much more from a 4 star hotel in Manhattan, especially with the W. hotel and ... rooms were stylish and modern, but for the price, room was dirty, fold out sofa bed had food and pretzels from previous users, couldn't use bathroom sink without splashing water all over because of bad tap, 1 of the 2 elevators makes a loud skreetching noise when in use, that had to be turned off every night because of the sound that reached the rooms, but that elevator was turned on very early in the morning on Saturday and Sunday causing us to have to get up early when we slept late. last but not least, to make matters worse, i don't call room service at all, but i needed 2 extra towels the morning before i checked out, i had to call 4 times to 2 or 3 different people at the front desk, and after an hour and a half, someone knocked my door with a hair blow dryer. i was mesmerized. i ended up using my old towels to be able to check out on time. i left very unsatisfied, and there was nothing anyone at the hotel were willing to do to make up for this massive mistake, and delay. what was supposed to feel like a great weekend getaway in a great suite in a high class hotel turned out to be the first and last experience i will ever have with the W hotel.

New York is amazing! But not this hotel.
MahiMahi Jun 24, 2009
This was my first trip to New York. A good thing to know is that taxis charge $45 to take you from JFK airport to anywhere ... in Manhattan (plus any additional tolls and tip). I called before we left to request a mini fridge and microwave because we were staying for 5 days. We took the red eye so we got to the hotel around 8:30, but check-in time isn't until 3pm. I gave them my cell number and they said they would call as soon as a room opened up. After walking about 25 blocks to and from Central Park, we were exhausted and just went back to the hotel around 12pm. They had a room available but never called us to let us know it was ready. They were holding our luggage for us and said they'd bring it to our room. We waited about 30 minutes, and still no luggage, so we went down to get it ourselves. We asked again about a fridge and microwave, and they just kept saying they're not sure if any are available. During our entire stay, they never once called to let us know whether or not any were available. Our room was on the side of the hotel by Lexington St. and the traffic was a little loud. Also, the elevators weren't working properly, and the alarm sound was constantly going off. I think the main and probably only reason why we didn't get good service was because we are a couple of girls in our 20s on vacation, and pretty much everyone else staying at the hotel was older and there for business. The only good service we got was from the doormen. They were very friendly. There is no pool/spa and no complementary breakfast. The only good thing about this hotel is that it's only 3 blocks from Grand Central Station, and Grand Central is in the center of most tourist stops on the Subway. To get to Times Square, you could take a quick shuttle from Grand Central Station. There are a few restaurants around the hotel but not very many. There is a small grocery store right around the corner which is convenient. I would not recommend this hotel, but I would recommend getting a hotel near a Subway entrance.

Not up to W Standards
ny fan Jun 16, 2009
You will not want to stay here if you are a regular W or Starwood patron. It is WAY below W Standards...most all the time the ... operaters were irritatingly inconvenienced by calls...The TV didn't work properly and the carpeting was not good. The suite did seem a little bigger than most Manhattan hotel rooms... this would be an ok place to stay only if you get it on sale in the $175.00 range. A patron I saw on the elevator was leaving the hotel immediately after seeing his room which he described as hideaous. I was most unhappy with how rude the staff downstairs was. Don't expect to ever see the doormen at night. You surely would be dissappointed if you pay the regular W rates.

Meh
MGM May 26, 2009
It took about an hour to get checked in because they had no record of my reservation and they had to go through orbitz's ... automated system on the phone in front of me instead of just reading the email confirmation and putting me into a room while they took care of the administrative side on their own. When I got to my room the carpeting was bunched up in certain areas and made for a tripping hazard because it wasn't stretched properly during installation. Additionally one of the two elevators was broken which made the wait time for the other a lot longer and they had no internet, but things like that happen and its hard to blame them for general maintenance issues when I've only been there for one weekend. The hotel's location was great and I didn't have any other problems. I wasn't around the hotel much so I never checked out any ammenities such as a pool or a gym, it seemed like the type of place that would have a nice one of each though.

I had a very nice stay at the W. The room was quiet and very comfortable, and the staff was quite friendly and courteous, ... which I really appreciated. The one downside was that the hotel appeared to have a nice lounge, but it wasn't open often, which seemed odd. I was particularly surprised it was closed just before dinner, as it would have been a fun place to get a drink before going out.

this hotel was just okay. It was too far away from the major landmarks of NYC and the room was old and smelled of smoke. I ... recommend if you stay at this hotel that you get a non smoking room. The lobby was very nice and I enjoyed the cocktail bar. THe staff were very friendly and helpful. I would have really enjoyed a coffee pot in my room or free coffee in the lobby in the morning. Overall it was okay but I will probably never stay there again.
