Best Place to Stay on Kaua'i

Jemz Nov 15, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

When we arrived at the Westin Princeville it took our breath away. It is such a gorgeous hotel with lush gardens and ... watefalls. Check-in was fast and we got to our room right away. The concierge called us upon arriving to our room to give us information about everything to do on the island, a list of restaurants, and a map. They also gave us a free bottle of champagne for being on our honeymoon. All staff were extremely personable and helpful. The hotel offers massages, pool side restaurant service, and grills all over the property. It was great to be able to grill our own feasts whenever we wanted. The massages were a little expensive, but were worth it! After exploring the whole island, we were so happy we had decided to stay on the north shore. Hanalei Bay is a great surf town only 5 minutes away. We went down to Kaua'i Back Country Adventures outside of Lihue to go tubing which was one of the funnest things we did. We also went on a dinner cruise with Holo Holo Tours which was on the southwest part of the island. There are so many great things to do that we missed like Kilauea Light House, zip lining at Princeville Ranch, and sun bathing on the South shore. When we come back the only place we'll stay will be the Westin Princeville Resort!!!

The hotel restaurant (Nanea) was super expensive. We bought our own food to grill and used the oven/microwave in our suite. The hotel supplies all kitchen utensils you'll ever need! There are also several great less expensive restaurants in Hanalei.

We stayed here for our honeymoon, not really knowing what to expect as we're not world travelers or anything, and it was ... great. The hotel's location on the North Shore was definitely preferable to us - we were surrounded by breathtaking views of inland mountains, cliffs dropping to the sea, and clear blue ocean as far as the eye could see. We did alot of kayaking, hiking, etc. and our location was close to numerous options for all the outdoor activities. The hotel seemed to have a mix of families, older couples, and honeymooners staying there. The amenities were great - there are 3 pool locations, so your pool experience could be as relaxing or social as you wanted it to be, and the propane grills located throughout the grounds were a great moneysaver. Instead of eating out every night, we could grill our own dinner, and eat outside overlooking the ocean. The only slight problem we had was trying to coordinate getting the room cleaned with times when we would be out - Housekeeping was not very happy when we asked them to come back later in the day. We had a great experience here though, and would recommend this hotel to anyone interested in viting Kauai.

There is a gorgoeus hiking trail (fairly rigorous though!) at the end of the main road that runs along the island (past Hanalei). The trail takes you into the mountains and along the cliffs at the waters edge. The most stunning views i have ever seen firsthand - absolutely amazing. The trail is about 14 miles long, and there is a waterfall at the end, but you dont have to go the whole way to get amazing views - they start right away. Gorgeous!

This is a beautiful resort !

fan of Kauai Oct 2, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

Beautiful and clean all the way around. Food is a bit expensive as well a gas in the area so we shopped in Kappa. The Resort ... offered us a courtesy room after check-out because we were taking the red eye flight home. This allowed us to stay at the pool all day and use the room to clean up and shower before having to leave for the air port. It was a very pleasant and beautiful stay and I would stay there again.

New clean hotel with fully equipped room

Luc Sep 11, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

Great new hotel in Princeville location (2008). Rooms are clean and very roomy with kitchen and washer/dryer. Location isn't ... the best since no direct beach access but it's only minutes away from everything (Princeville shopping center and Hanalei Bay). The bluff does give you ocean views and view of the lighthouse and the pool area is pretty nice. Missing was breakfast/buffet at the hotel. There are BBQ's around the hotel where you can cook your own meat.

The real Hawaii

Outdoor lover Sep 9, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

I didn't stay much at the hotel but the staff was very helpful with the things to do in the area and in helping you book ... activites, if yours didn't work out. It was peaceful and nobody overwhelm you with things they wanted you to do. I loved the room. I'm sure there are better places but with that said, I didn't expect it to be so nice. I felt like I got a great deal. Nice veiw of the ocean, great parking, the grounds were very nicely kept, staff was helpful, and the room had everything I needed to minimize the time I would have had to go out. I enjoyed the water and the beach (snorkling, swimming), Kayaking, hiking, a little shopping (my least favorite) scuba was canceled for my wife due to swells from weather, zip-lining and we skipped some of the other activites to enjoy some more intimate time together away from other, which was very easy to do. Overall I would say that this trip was one of the best I've had. If I ever go back to Kawai I know were and with whom I want to stay. Thank you Orbitz! Rick Garcia

Time savers hint

I picked Time beacuse it = money. Research and reserve the things you really want to do early. The ealier you get in the less you pay for most things. Noting is really that far from the other. In one day you can go from one side of the island to the other, and still enjoy a few activies while you take in some great scenery. Leave yourself a few days open to reschedule just in case things don't go the way you planned. Look around for a better deal. We found some cheaper deals on activities by talking with the locals. Hikinig cost nothing except some energy and drinking water, and you can go on some really nice trails there on the both South and North Shore. bring your energy this Island is a little more rustic that the others, I hope it never changes.

Beautiful Hotel / Great Location

The Newleyweds Aug 24, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

The Westin is a beautiful hotel with great pools, clean rooms and friendly staff. Only bad experience we had was the rooms ... have thin walls. We had a family staying next door with a screaming baby - we heard everything and felt like they were in the same room. While visiting the island (be sure to bring hiking/walking shoes), we explored the Waimea canyon, Wailua Falls, Queen's Bath, the Secret Beach, Hanalei Bay and drove from one end of the island to the other. When exploring, be sure to bring drinks and something to snack on - roads are long and winding. Another tip: bring mosquito repellant (we came back with some major bug bites). Overall, the trip was fabulous! Wish we had stayed longer than the 10 days we had booked.

We loved our room at the Westin! It had a great whirlpool tub, great shower, nice kitchette with all the needed pans and ... utensils. (we didn't use them but they were there). The staff was friendly and the rooms were very clean. The bed was super comfortable too! We found a path to the beach below the hotel. It is very steep so good shoes are helpful. We wished we were closer to the beach, but in building #4 you face the ocean so you do have an ocean view. The poolside bar was nice, they have a drink special at happy hour for $6.

Wonderful and Relaxing

honeymooner Aug 3, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

This was our honeymoon, and the staff went out of their way to make it as special as we had hoped it would be. There were ... many things that we enjoyed about the hotel, but here are just a few. There was complimentary valet service the first night we were there...it was so nice to have our bags brought to the room and the Jeep parked after a long day of travel, and not only did they park the Jeep but they also put the top up on it, which was impressive because we had a hard time figuring it out.The concierge, [...], was so helpful with her local knowledge and scheduling of our events. Utilizing her expertise saved us so much time, and got us trips and locations that were very fun, wonderful service, and in excellent locations. The location is great, so close to Hanalei Bay and the beginning of the Napali coast....great beaches that aren't overpopulated by people, resorts or houses, so that you can truly enjoy the beach, the water and the scenery.

There is a grocery store nearby, Foodland. Given that there is a Kitchenette in the rooms there and grills outside for your enjoyment, you can cut down on meal costs by shopping there and cooking at the hotel. Also, when you go to the Foodland get there saver card (you can get a temporary one at the customer service counter) which will cut the price on many items in the store in half. Be prepared for high prices on everything, it is an island after all.

Pristine hotel, quiet getaway

The setting is stunning. We had the basic hotel room and it was very spacious, very clean. The on premise restaurant was ... pricey and decent. The on premise store was very expensive, but did sell fresh food cooking dinner at the very clean BBQ stations (mahi-mahi, chicken, etc). We had a rental car, recommended for this site, and snorkeled, surfed and swam elsewhere. Directly accessible beach was not good for swimming or anything. Hotel offers a free shuttle to Anini Beach, which is better. Rains nightly at this hotel, weather okay in the daytime though. Room comes with all kitchen necessities, but only one complimentary coffee serving. The rest of the pots are on your own dime.

Westin-Princeville Villas - Kaua'i

It was great to have our own kitchen. We enjoyed using the nice grills to make our own meals...saved some money for other ... activities on the island and allowed us to have quiter, more romantic lunches/dinners together. If you're looking to relax, this is a perfect place.

Fancy place

Sam Jul 3, 2009

Great place to relax and enjoy peace and quiet. 3 pools to relax at. You could never leave the hotel if you wanted to as ... there is a restaurant, store/market, and bar on site, but all are expensive. Wish there would have been a beach closer by. The hotel is up on a cliff and the beach is a bit of a hike to get to or a drive, depending where you want to go. Great trip overall. Exactly what we were looking for, quiet, peaceful, and restful.

Family friendly but still disorganized

Nice hotel with good facilities - especially for families. Lots of gas BBQ's to cook your own meals (if that is what you want ... to do on vacation). Beautiful setting. Only 1 real place to eat & I would have expected it to have worked out the kinks with restaraunt reservations by now. They couldn't get us out of there fast enough at check out time and were rude about it. At these prices and in this economy I expect better service. Like most of the island, there are wild chickens & roosters everywhere and they crow at all hours of the day.

Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas

Sue Jul 1, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

I loved the ambiance of the hotel . . a feeling of spaciousness and relaxation. I loved the 1 bedroom villa which was ... beautifully decorated because it was fairly new. It was so clean, and the Heavenly bed with the white duvet covering a quilt was wonderful. We didn't have much privacy because of the location of our room - cars were parked out front and people could walk too close to our room. However, if we had paid more for a room, I'm sure that we could have gotten a better view.

should be a lot better than it really is

road warrior Jun 30, 2009

Princeville is a resort town with no charm at all. The Westin Princeville is completely fitting with its surroundings. Like ... the rest of Princeville, it just feels fake. The room was spacious and useful. I especially liked having a kitchenette with a full-size fridge in the room. Other than the kitchenette and in-room laundry (obviously for the timeshare crowd), it was remarkably like every other Westin I've ever stayed in. The on-site restaurant leaves a lot to be desired. The Sunday brunch is gross and overpriced ($40/person). The food served in the restaurant the rest of the week is poorly prepared, and the service is lacking. The poolside bar has one cocktail special daily, so you can get liquored up on mai tais relatively cheaply. The cleanliness of the hotel also leaves a lot to be desired. My bathroom smelled strongly of mildew all week. When housekeeping cleans the rooms, they leave plastic bags of trash and dirty linens in the hallway. These bags aren't picked up until late afternoon. It's pretty gross to have to walk past trash and dirty laundry all day long.

If you're a foodie, leave your expectations behind when visiting Kauai. There isn't a great restaurant anywhere on the island. There are a few that are okay, but nothing great.

The hotel restaurant (Nanea) was super expensive. We bought our own food to grill and used the oven/microwave in our suite. The hotel supplies all kitchen utensils you'll ever need! There are also several great less expensive restaurants in Hanalei.

Gorgeous!

We shopped for lunches and snacks at Foodland in Princeville shopping center. They had great sandwiches there to pack up for the beach. Ask for a membership card to get the discount. Dont forget to pack a colapsable cooler for drinks, beer and food. We had to buy a styrofoam one and ended up throwing it away on our last day. Cant pack that!

Entertainment hint

If you book a tour to the Na'Pali coast ensure they operate from Hanelei. We booked through Orbitz and had to drive over an hour to the South Shore to meet a boat at 6:15 in the morning. There are tour companies that leave from the North Shore that are 10 minutes from this hotel. Also, keep in mind the North Shore is somewhat remote so prices in town are very expensive.
