Very clean but a bit worn. Small rooms but if you are attending a convention at the Toronto Convention center, this is as as ... close as you can get except for the on-site hotel (twice the cost). A short block walk to the Union Station Skywalk to the convention center. Only a block and a half from the theater district.

Unexceptional

Rebecca Oct 31, 2009

My husband and I stayed at the Strathcona for 5 nights on our belated honeymoon. We drove in from Chicago on this trip, and ... it was the first time either of us had been to that city. The location of this hotel is excellect. It is in the heart of downtown and we were no more than a 30-45 minute walk from almost anything we wanted to do. However, the room was quite small, and the lack of parking lot added at least $20 each day to the cost of the vacation. Also, while I did not have a problem with the bed, my husband woke up with a sore back every morning. This hotel has very firm mattresses, so if that would be a problem for you I would suggest finding a different hotel. Overall, we had a decent stay here. It was our first time in Toronto, so being centrally located was very useful. However, if we come back to Toronto, we probably won't return here.

Great location, otherwise just okay

Jess Oct 12, 2009

We were just in Toronto for the weekend and it was our first time there, so we wanted to see a lot of the sites and do some ... shopping. This hotel was the perfect location for that, it is just a few very short blocks away from just about everything. Checking in went very quickly and the room was very clean, although small. This didn't bother us much, because we didn't need a lot of space and didn't spend much time there anyway. The worst thing about the room was the bed - it was hard as a rock! Also, when people were talking in the hallways you could hear them in the room. This only happened two or three times and not while we were trying to sleep, but was still annoying. Also, the restaurant attached to the hotel was not open the entire weekend (although the pub downstairs was), this might have been nice for breakfast. The hotel was nice enough, but I think next time I would spend a little more and try something else in the same neighborhood.

Not very impressed

ckimberlygo Sep 20, 2009

I attended a 3 day training session in Toronto this past week. I was quickly checked in by a friendly desk person and found ... my room to be adequate, a king sized bed, entertainment unit, small desk and 2 piece bath. The view was of another high rise. I found the room to be clean but very small for the price and rating point of this hotel. I have stayed in Toronto many times and have paid less for a more spacious room with a better view and hotel parking. The bedding was clean but had the smell of hospital sheets. On my last day there, I went to take my medication to find that it had been removed from the drawer. I had put it in the night side drawer the day before so it was not lying out for the housekeeping service to see. I was very upset and searched the room at length with no avail. This medication is controlled and very necessary for my health. I spoke to the desk staff immediately and was met with an unhelpful response, "we will check the room and see if it turns up." The medication was not found. When I was picked up from a family member on my last day, he was upset because he had called the hotel to inquire about directions and a place to park to pick me up. He said the staff was helpful initially until they realized that I had checked out that morning. He said their tone became terse and abrupt, he said they did not help him at all and ended the call. I would not recommend this hotel and have already booked another place to stay when I return to Toronto next month.

Fantastic location, nice rooms

The Sindbad Sep 17, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

I was sightseeing in Toronto for 6 days and the hotel's great location made everything very accessible. There was a bus stop ... for each and every hop on hop off bus in a 3 min. walk distance and union station was just round the corner. the room was nice a and clean, nothing fancy but everything you need is there, the service was good and the concierge was very helpful, The hotel's location on york st south of front st makes it a nice quiet spot but still near everything. The airport express says it stops in front of the hotel but actually it stops in front of the royal york hotel which is round the corner but it's a 2 min walk or more if you have lots of luggage. I recommend it for families, friends or loners!

Convenient location!

Michelle Sep 15, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

The hotel was pretty bare bones, but was perfectly fine for me. My room was on the small side and the towels weren't the ... fluffiest, but it was clean, the bed was comfortable, it was usually quiet, and the location was great! I was walking distance from the Harbour, the CN Tower, The Second City, and from Union Station (so I could hop on the subway easily). The room service menu looked pretty scanty. Also, I could never figure out when people started cleaning the rooms. It seemed like they started early and just hung out waiting for me to leave me room--I heard them shuffling around when I woke up (at around 7:30 am), and they pounced on me at the elevators ("Can we clean your room now?" when I left around 9:15 am).

Great base for exploring the city. All main attractions within walking distance-including CN tower, Rogers Centre, Steam ... Whistle Brewery, Theatres and some museums. Also near Union Station and subway stop for exploring further afield. Friendly and helpful staff Clean rooms - although a bit on the small side - but ok if like us you only want to sleep there. Lifts could be unreliable - a problem if you were on the 10th floor. Overall good value for money - a superb trip!

Disappointed beyond belief

JJ Sep 3, 2009

This Hotel was incredibly disappointing. I brought my 2 boys to Toronto for the "downtown" experience and going against my ... better judgement, opted to try something new. Bad choice. The staff initially didn't have my reservation from Orbitz, he answered 5 phone calls before finishing my check in a 1/2 hour later with my 2 kids present. The he put us in a "better" room and after finding out parking was >$40 for a 24 hour period, OR 2 blocks away, we hauled all of our luggage back to the hotel only 2 find that the "better" room was a queen bed in a matchbox room size that smelled so bad of smoke we were coughing!! When I hauled my kids and luggage back to front desk I was greeted by a new person that disbelived my findings and even my kids were trying to defend me! He then set us up in another room, about the same size.. with 2 twin beds. It was in view of a brick wall and incredibly small. Whenever we walked through the lobby we were greeted with stares at the kids. Someone in the elevator actually commented on them being there!!!!! Aside from the location, and there are many hotels in the same area.. I will NEVER stay at this place again!!!

It was ok.... I expected better

AEKaki Aug 6, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

I expected a lot more from the hotel considering there are better reviews. If you just want a room in downtown Toronto, next ... to the CN tour, and you don't care for the type of room they offer and want something cheap, then this is the place for you. If you want something decent enough to relax and have your "space", then pay the extra 20-30$ and go somewhere better.

Recreation/Attractions hint, Short Walk

Close to many places. Rogers Center, Convention Center, Sky needle, Waterfront

Recreation/Attractions hint, Short Walk

Even though it is one of the most touristy things to do while visiting, I would highly recommend seeing the CN Tower, which is a short walk from this hotel. It is breathtaking.

--Rebecca, Chicago, IL Oct 31, 2009

Dining hint, Short Walk

There are a lot of restaurants along King Street in the entertainment district (take a left out of the hotel and a left on King), we went to one in particular called Urban that was absolutely fantastic!

--Jess, Ithaca, NY Oct 12, 2009

Recreation/Attractions hint, Short Walk

the harbour front is a 15-20 min walk and it contains queen's quay a supermarket some restaurants and all the cruise ships.

--The Sindbad, Cairo, Egypt Sep 17, 2009

Entertainment hint, Short Drive

Cirque du Soleil. Catch them while they are in town

--Is. Traveler, PEI, Canada Sep 14, 2009

Money savers hint

use the GO train on a weekend to get to Niagara Falls - way cheaper than an organised tour.

--DAS, Yorkshire, UK Sep 9, 2009

Entertainment hint, Short Walk

Walk through the "path" to get directly to the Rogers Centre.

--Red Sox follower, Naugatuck, CT Aug 25, 2009

Dining hint, Short Walk

Across the street is a Tim Hortons food place. Right next door is a small store, and there is a Second Cup coffee shop right down the street.

--Bill Greene, Los Angeles, California Aug 22, 2009

Nightlife hint, Short Walk

The places that I visited were within a mile of the hotel.

--Nia, Bronx, NY Aug 4, 2009

Shopping hint, Short Walk

I had a lot of trouble trying to find a liquor store. On the last day I found one in Union Station located down the block and across the street from the hotel. You have to go down into the shops to locate but well worth it if you want to grab some wine, beer, etc.

--First time traveler to Toronto, South Jersey Jul 1, 2009

Nightlife hint, Short Walk

Very close to Queen Street and the entertainment district

--maf, philadelphia, pa Jun 29, 2009

--Buckwheat, waco,Tx Jun 21, 2009

Recreation/Attractions hint, Short Walk

CN Tower, Hockey Hall of Fame, Kensington Market, University of Toronto, shops, lots of restaurants, etc.

--alison2682, Boston area, MA Jun 15, 2009

Dining hint, Short Walk

The Watermark restaurant, despite having a fantastic location overlooking the water and a spacious outdoor dining area, offered the poorest service I and my girlfreind have ever experienced. We waited over an hour for our meals of which neither of us ate because of how poor the quality was.

--sparkowl, Birmingham, MI Jun 7, 2009

Dining hint, Short Walk

There is a multitude of very inviting dining areas all within walking distance of the Strathcona --- fine dining and more casual with lots of quait outdoor areas.

--MP, Boston, MA May 31, 2009

Money savers hint

At first glance, there is no direct, easy connection to the airport via subway/rail, so may people opt for the $20 express bus. I found that by riding the 192 airport rocket to the Kipling subway stop and taking the subway to Union Station (change in Bloor), it cost only $2.25 plus you get the real Toronto transportation experience. Takes about an hour.

--Andy, New Jersey May 27, 2009

Recreation/Attractions hint, Long Walk

Royal Ontario Museum, a long walk or short subway ride north

--Anonymous, Winnipeg May 9, 2009

Entertainment hint, Long Walk

CN Tower

--Aaron, Fort Mcmurray Dec 30, 2008

Recreation/Attractions hint, Short Walk

The CN Tower and Rogers Centre are within a 5 minute walk.

--Noman, Bronx Dec 23, 2008

Dining hint, Short Walk

Many great restaurants in the area.
