Nice pool and easy access to the beach.
Sun loving EH Nov 3, 2009
We stayed during Halloween week, it wasn't overly crowded or uncontrolled as I expected. The hotel has a mildew/moldy smell ... as soon as you enter, I assume it might have flooded before or it's just an old structure that wasn't well kept. The room is decent, entire floor was tiled which was different. Bathroom is small and much like one in an older apartment building still fairly clean. The hotel food was too expensive for what it served. Salad description was mixed greens and arrived with iceberg lettuce for over $10 with no meat. The staff is friendly and accommodating, and the pool area is pretty good especially because it leads right to the beach. The fitness center is fitting for a quick workout but the moldy smell is even worse on the 17th floor than the lobby. Overall a decent hotel but not at all glamorous like the photos show.

The one saving grace of this hotel is the location. You can walk to most things (clubs, bars, restaurants, shops, etc.) Be prepared to stay out late. If you don't, you won't be able to go to sleep anyway since everyone else doesn't start coming back from the clubs until 1am and some as late as 4am.

Below Expectations (which were not high)
Disappointed Oct 12, 2009
While we were not expecting anything fancy (because the price of the hotel was reasonable for South Beach) but we were ... expecting the basics. Like towels and a sink that drained water. We didn't get much sleep because of the party crowd coming in at all hours and slamming doors and talking in the the hallways. I guess that's not the hotels fault. But, the worst was being awoken at 4am by a fire alarm. We had to evacuate and leave the room for about an hour. What set off the alarm you ask? Their own club on the ground floor used smoke machines that set off the alarm. And then, no one in the hotel knew how to shut them off. They did comp us our parking (which is $29 per day). Also, they charge an extra $3 on top of the rate they charge for the safe in your room.

Honeymoon on the beach
The Honeymooners Sep 30, 2009
We had a balcony room that overlooked the ocean....what a nice view. Hotel was clean and staff was helpful. Pool was closed ... due to off season maintenance. We were able to use the neighboring hotel pool...still nice, yet inconvenient. Only complaint, one balcony chair was cheap, rickety, and did not match the nicer one. If we had planned on spending more that one night at the hotel, I am sure the concierge would have replaced it at our request.

Take the time to get up early and walk the beach at sunrise with your honey. If you are walking and thinking of eating at a cafe or sidewalk eatery, most will offer you a "VIP" card that will save you twenty percent on your total bill. All you have to do is hesitate when looking at the menu...or start walking away.

Labor Day Weekend Getaway
Sleepless in South Beach Sep 8, 2009
Perhaps Labor Day isn't the best time for anyone over the age of 25 to stay at the Shelborne. Under 25's everywhere having a ... great time meant lots of noise in the halls and from the pool area all through the night. Okay, call me old fashioned but whooping it up around the pool area at 5:30 am after the night clubs closed was a bit much. Security was no where to be seen and sleep was allusive. The staff did a great job keeping the place neat and clean thoughout the onslaught and always seemed to have a good attitude about it. Once the party was over the hotel went back to being a pleasant, classy place to stay. South Beach was great fun. The concierge recommended some great restaurants and set us up with a city/boat tour that was interesting and well worth it. We were gone for the better part of five hours and saw more than we could have imagined. Front desk staff were helpful and available.

1st Family Vacation
Mom_Dad_Baby Aug 6, 2009
We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. However, the housekeeping always came when our baby would sleep, so for those of ... you with kids staying there just request them to come and clean your room when you are not there and they will. The staff was really nice, all of our requests were fulfilled (THANK YOU). The pool is really small, but who would wnat to stay at the pool when the beach is out in the back:). Very close to everything, shopping, dining, car rentals, BEACH. From the outside this place looks like Motel 6, but inside it's really nice. Our room was remodeled and had really nice furniture and beds were really comfortable. The food there is really expensive (in the hotel) so go some place else because it is not good, except the hamburger but who could eat that everyday. Also, the parking is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE, and it is too NOISE at all time (the street) but not much they can do about that. Overall, not a bad place to stay at all.

Philly Divas Aug 4, 2009
We were very disappointed. Upon arrival, we had to change rooms five (05) times!!! The first room they gave us was already ... occupied! The second room had old dirty carpet that smelled like mold & mildew, the balcony door didn't close, paint chipping off of the walls. The third room had a partial view of the beach and a full view of a hotel which had windows boarded up or blown out. The fourth room again smelled like mildew or someone had vomited in there. They finally upgraded us to a half decent room with an ocean view but the a/c unit leaked water all over our clothes that were hanging in the closet!!! The pool was small, one hot tub didn't work and the other was filthy!!!I would not recommend this hotel to a stray dog or homeless person!!

Travel Bug Aug 2, 2009
Hotel Lobby smelled damp/old. Paint chipping off the wall in the room; Old curtains that were poorly hung; Toilet in the ... room not flushing properly. Required to pay a mandatory fee daily for a in-room safe. Hotel restaurant's food was good, but they closed daily at 5pm. The ocean view was awesome!Would proabably be a great hotel with plenty of consistent maintenance and TLC.

Great location on the beach
Long Weekender Jun 22, 2009
This was a great location on the beach and a decent room. The lobby and lounges are deceptively nice, highlighting the fact ... that the rooms are a bit old. The bathroom was a bit small but the balcony was nice. My only complaint is that they initially tried to put me in a room without a view or balcony when I had paid for a deluxe room. They gladly solved the problem when I said something, so it was no big deal.

Shelbourne a forgettable experience
cmjatlanta May 27, 2009
We stayed at the Shelbourne with high expectations based upon the information on the web site. When we arrived (Memorial Day ... Weekend)the staff was overwhelmed by other Guests and the inability to control crowds. There was extensive trash throughout the Hotel, noise, nudity and open use of drugs in the rooms and the Grounds. When we complained we were told that because it was "Urban Festival Weekend" nothing could be done. This Hotel should have maintained order on their property - there was no excuse. The website does not accuratly reflect the condition of this property.

HWatts Apr 22, 2009
My husband and I visited Miami for his birthday for the 2nd yr in a row and wanted a hotel closer to the beach. The reviews ... were not bad so I booked through orbitz. Our room wasn't very clean, we only had a shower and the shower had NO shelves to put our soap, shampoo etc. and the toilet didn't work the very next morning. We had a difficult time getting another room or a refund b/c we booked through Orbitz. They claim if that we paid Orbitz for the rooms and they haven't been paid yet so they couldn't provide a refund. We were then put in another room about 1 hour later. It was a nicer room but like the first room it was very noisy and not a beach front room like we paid for. The only benefit of this hotel is the location. There are plenty of other hotels that are in the same price range that are nicer and cleaner.

The hotel was in a great location, but there was a slight odor in the entire hotel. I did not get the ocean view room I ... paid. After much protest, I only got a partial ocean view room. There was no ice machine in the hotel and the front desk staff was not very pleasant. The bathrooms are very small and the shower faucet didn't work very well. The Shelborne exceeded my expectations. From the bellhop, who actually asked us our names and used them, to the front desk ... and the room service I was very satsified. I was traveling with my son and the room we were given had a king size bed. I returned to the front desk and told them that we would need two double beds. They were very accomodating and the room we were given had a little balcony and a wonderful view of the ocean. It also had a mini kitchen. It is an older building but they have done a nice remodeling job and the room had a nice feel to it. The Shelborne sits right in the middle of South Beach with all the shopping and dining close by. I will be staying here on my return trips to Miami.
