Reef Resort is on the peaceful side of the island, at East End. We loved it. The beach is fantastic. Our oceanfront suite ... had a kitchenette, and there was a grocery store across the street, so we didn't have to use restaurants for all meals. There are about 5 restaurants within walking distance, and with our rental car we were able to reach every other place on the island. I do recommend a rental car, as the East End is isolated. For us that was perfect. We will return!

The Quiet Hide Away!
Tired Driver! Aug 24, 2009
The Reef Hotel was a great get away! We felt like it was really out of the way, but once you got there, it was very ... relaxing. My husband had to work for part of the time in Georgetown. Had I known the resort was that far away, we would have gone to the West side. Overall, the hotel was very clean, personable, had great views of the ocean. You can't beat the views for the amount of money! If we did not have anywhere to go and did not want to travel anywhere, The Reef would have been the perfect spot. One other downside was the food. There are not many options for restaurants. We were hoping for fresh fish, and most of the time we ended up with sandwiches. We also noticed that many of the directions we got were not exactly correct. If they said it was only 15 minutes away, it ended up 30 minutes or more! The beach was very nice. The water is a bit choppy and not too easy to snorkel in, but it can be done! On our last day, we got to go north a bit to a place called Rum Point. There is a great spot with a restaurant, area to swim, dive, rent floating equipment, take the ferry...We asked for a place to go other than the hotel, and we were not told about this! It was a great find. All in all, The Reef is a very nice place if you want complete quiet and not many choices for restaurants, etc. If you want to be close to town, better restaurants, go to the West side. The water there is completely calm. The Eat End is not good if you have to travel for business.

We loved that we could walk out our door and be right on the beach. A lovely beach----great snorkling, plenty of beach ... chairs and sea weed was raked up early every morning by staff. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to see that our needs were meet and that we were enjoying our stay. We recommend this resort to everyone as a great place for a family vacation

My boyfriend and I relaxed here for 5 days and thoroughly enjoyed the low-key atmosphere, phenomenal view over the water, and ... fairly easy access to anything we felt like doing on the island. At the hotel, you can swim in the sea or the pool, play tennis (free), snorkel ($15/day to rent), sunbathe, work out (free), bike ride (free), hang at the beach bar etc. The concierge staff were great - very helpful to set up any kind of activity or offer tips. Also, most of the bartenders were super-friendly and ready to answer questions or chat about the island (or just let you relax in peace). The food and drink were very tasty but very expensive. There is a minimall with a supermarket, swimming gear, bakery, booze shop, and souvenir shop across the street. There are plenty of things to do, or you can literally spend hours doing nothing. Weather permitting, which, it usually is, the snorkeling is excellent right in front of the hotel - the water is shallow and clear. There is a lot to see. Watch out for rocks on the way in and out though - this is not a large beach; it's rocks and coral and grass. The Reef is a great place away from the noise and bustle of a typical beach resort. Best tour/event: Stingray City (off Rum Point).

dancerinthenile Jul 28, 2009
We chose to stay at the Reef because it is away from the hustle and bustle of George Town. The room we stayed in was ... spotless. We viewed other rooms at other resorts during time share presentations, and none of them compared. The only issue was the front desk had a few workers who were not pleasant and had a small amount of knowledge about the resort. It took forever to get my travelers checks back, that they held in case of charges made to the room. [...], in the front, was not nice at all nor did she seem to care about customers. Everyone else was very pleasant. We even bought a time share we loved it so much.

Everything is closed on Sundays so if you arrive on Sunday, you have to eat at the bar in the resort. Rent a car because there are not many dining options in this side of the island. There is a grocery store across the street, but the prices are a bit high. Stop at the store near the airport, if you can.

the best thing about this place is its remoteness from 7 Miles, and most of the other civilization. If you are looking for ... night life, this is not place for you. If you are looking for a nice beach, sun, ocean, pools and place with LESS tourists, stores, attractions - that's The place. We did not eat out that much, and when we did in their place - we did not like the food at all. Same with the drinks - they were often too watery. Other than that - cant think of anything to complain. It was nice and relaxing.

snorkeling - just walk along the coast to as far as you want beyond Morit's dock, and snorkel back along the coast all the way to The Reef. There is more fish and stuff near Morit's for some reason.

Lewarner Jul 13, 2009
The Reef is a small hotel, with very nice full kitchen rooms all on the beach front. We got a fantastic deal through Orbitz ... but when we arrived we learned all our breakfasts were included as well! This is the quiet end of Grand Cayman but I don't really think the island is a "hopping spot" anyway. The Reef has a bar/cafe on the beach with very good food. We ate there several times right on the beach. It was lovely. There are two pools though it says there are three. Two of the pools are smaller and linked together. The Reef tries to create a festive atmosphere. There is live music at the bar on the beach every night. You can sit and listen or go back to your room and listen from the patio. Nothing to jangle your nerves or be annoying. We were there over the 4th of July and did not expect there would be fireworks and a 4th celebration. But they have a lot of American guests so they did a very nice event. If you want to snorkel or scuba the Reef is not the best place to go from but there are plenty of nearby outfitters and locations for both. I would recommend a car or planning to rent one for part of the time. There is a lovely beach are called Rum Point that should not be missed for snorkeling and lovely sandy beaches. You need a car to get there. Also the best snorkeling we found was at Eden Rock on the west side of the island. Easy to get to with a car. And who wants to miss the adventure of driving on the left side of the road. We had some great laughs over it. Things were not perfect. The concierge were great but the maids weren't always very thorough. Also this is a timeshare property. They made us five offers to see their presentation. If you are assertive they are very cordial. They do give away some nice things if you decide to participate. The Reef has a "famous" Stingray City cruise. I would recommend going with someone else like Red Sails Sports who will give you better activities for your money. But when our room was too noisy due to other guests they moved us to a very nice alternative. The internet service available is terrible. It is not run by the Reef but they were unable to help us get assistance in any way. We are a wireless family with lots of recreational uses for the internet. We had lots of dropped connections, no response to service requests from the wireless owner and probably got about a third of the value we paid for it. So if you need internet connection to enjoy your vacation consider another place! All in all, if we go to Grand Cayman again, I think we would consider the Reef again.

If you want to buy local Caymanian crafts, go the the Farmer's Market on Sat from 9am to 1pm, located between Savannah and Bodden Town. Or go to the Georgetown waterfront when a cruise ship is in, to the local Craft Market. Many of the other souvenirs are not local.

The resort was nice and I liked that it was removed from the cruise ship world of Georgetown. The only problem we had was the ... amount of children at the pool at all hours. Usually with no parent supervision. The hot tub said no children allowed, but there were always children in there. Ask for a room away from the pool. The trip to stingray city was LOTS of fun. We chose to pay for ours and not sit through a time share speech. We were not bothered by the staff about it at all. My husband did a lot of fly fishing at Heritage Beach which is about a 10 minute drive. Rent a car!!

Hotel is located on the quiet east side away from busy Seven Miles beach. You'll probably need a (rental) car to get there ... and it takes about an hour from the west side / airport with many 25 MPH speed limit towns on the south side. Hotel was very clean, well kept, beach was cleaned every morning. You can snorkel directly from the beach for perhaps not the most vivid coral formations but still lots of fish to see. If you are looking to party...this is not the place for you! If you looking to hang out with 20-30 year olds to get ... drunk...this is not the place for you. If you looking to snorkel right off the beach, relax in piece and quiet..the Reef is a perfect spot. Due to the coral and sea weed there isn't much swimming right outside the hotel. But the snorkeling is wonderful. Snorkeling under the pier was great. I didn't mind not being able to swim in the ocean because the snorkeling made up for it. You can't have both! Besides you can always swim in the pool. We rented a car and drove to seven mile beach for the day to swim and snorkeled. I highly recommend snorkeling at seven mile beach too. The hotel was perfect. No complaints. Clean, pretty and big enough. We are already planning to go back in a few months. I would actually like to live there!!

We ate mostly in the middle to eastern end of GC. We ate at the Cracked Conch up in the West End. Portofino was very good (about 5 minutes away). We ate at Run Point and Kaibo Point (about 15 to 20 minutes away). We also ate at the Lighthouse and the restaurant next to it. Overall, there are a number of nice restaurants and most are affordable. The Cracked Conch and Lighthouse seem a bit overpriced for the food so you will be paying for atmosphere.
