Hotel in a very nice area of Little Italy. Staff very friendly and helpful. Don't really hear nearby interstate traffic or ... closeness to airport. Rooms were clean and spacious. Just a few blocks to a trolley stop for easy access to downtown, shopping, beaches and sport stadiums. Never visited the restuarant or bar as we were visiting relatives but looked nice. We visit San Diego often and will stay here again.

Basically, I was truly disappointed. It was very hot and there was no pool! The hot tub was drained and the court yard was ... full of junk and clutter. The carpeting leading to the rooms was stained. I felt as though I was in a "dump". There was no refrigerator in the room and we had to pay extra for parking per day. The staff would not allow me to get my Choice Hotel points and would not help me to print my plane ticket. The room was totally over-priced for what we got. I do not recommend it to anyone.

not bad
ginaweena Aug 14, 2009
Overall not a bad place to stay. My friend and I were in San diego for a conference and chose this hotel because of the ... location and the free shuttle to the convention center, zoo, etc. The rooms were clean and the beds were high quality and very comfy. However, the hotel did not have a pool and the hot tub was not functional during our stay. We were told that the hot tub was going to be taken out. Also, there was a lot of road construction going on next to the hotel so it was very noisy at 6am. Otherwise, no complaints.

Romantic Getaway
Soon to be Mrs. Aug 9, 2009
During our stay we were close enough to walk over to the ferry where we went over to Coronado for the day and stayed at the ... beach and walk around to see the shops. When we came back we walk down one street and ate at one of the many Italian restaurants. Had breakfast at the Glass Door, it was good and great view of city and bay but over priced. Location was great because it was easy enough to get from here to there quickly. Balboa park has some great museums for young and older couples and families. Wonderful place to stay great views of bay and city. Only problem had to wait two hours to get the room we wanted, worth waiting for. Also main elevator is only one that goes from lobby to fifth second elevator from first to fourth, main elevator often is slow gets a lot of use and during our stay was out of order for an hour or so. But had a perfect weekend, would defiantly recommend.

Porto Vista is in a great location. Little Italy is a very charming neighborhood with lots of great food and coffee. Within ... walking distance to downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter. We were there for Comic Con. The hotel was a short walk through downtown. It was worth the price we paid. We enjoyed the ... room since we only really slept and showered. The only bad part of the hotel is the staff and overall organization. We were greeted with "bad attitudes" and the staff never really changed from that.

We were there for San Diego Comic-con. Trying to book a room during this time is difficult and this was the cheapest I could ... find. Basically we needed someplace to sleep and shower, and that's what we got. It's just a small room 2 queen beds and the bathroom. And this was suppose to be a deluxe room because of the microwave and refrigerator. Well the microwave was small and fridge was just a tad bit bigger. It could probably hold a six pack. They were both inside a cabinet under the sink. Also I wouldn't recommend this hotel if you have a baby. They offer a complimentary shuttle service which is nice but you would have to supply your own car seat. What??? So then after they drop you off you have to carry your car seat around with you??? They also have a restaurant on-site, the Glass Door. They don't have any high chairs.

Pleasant Experience
nerd1 Jul 26, 2009
We just got home from Comic Con. Had a great experience. The rooms were clean and spacious enough. They also had some nice ... smelling bath and body works soaps and lotions. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. They had a free shuttle to the convention center and drove us there quickly. Two of the days we took a taxi because we wanted to go earlier than 7 am. It was only about a $8-$10 taxi ride. The only negative about this hotel was that the staff didn't know that orbitz said parking was free. In the end we didn't pay because we had to print out a copy of our orbitz confirmation that said parking was free. If we had to pay it would have been $14 a day. ****Warning**** also be aware of taxi drivers. Make sure they know where they're going before you get in the cab and that they're driving you in the right direction. Otherwise they'll take you the wrong way on purpose it seems or they just don't know where they're going and they shouldn't be driving anyways.

Nice, but fancy packaging hides flaws
T-Dog Traveler Jul 21, 2009
First Impressions are important... they did well here. Hotel exterior is sleek and contemporary; the reception area hip and ... upscale. This did not carry over to the rooms, which were pretty much your standard bland institutional fare floor to ceiling. There was nothing contemporary, upscale or particularly nice about the rooms, but In terms of whats really important- they were decent. Mine was, fairly spacious, had everything you might want (in working order) and the furnishings seemed fairly new. The in between spaces/common area/walkways are what really stuck out. It was like an old motor inn, only instead of there being a pool in the enclosed center courtyard it was the hotel service yard filled with employee vehicles, repair projects, and random furniture pieces. It was rather odd and obviously not aesthetically appealing, but since I don't sleep on the walkways, its importance is low. Overall my experience was good-- above average even. The location is excellent. The Little Italy neighborhood has come a long way- lots of restaurants, shops, etc. right there. The Service was good, and the place was clean. A couple things to consider... The 'view' descriptions: Beware of what they call a view. According to them, nearly all their rooms have either a city or a harbor view. Not true- especially if you are on one of the lower floors. We changed rooms- neither had the advertised view- neither had any view. Parking: Not what was advertised! They charge $15/day, and with construction in the area and mostly 2 hour parking all around, you have little choice but to pay if you have a car. Elevators: They may just be the slowest in southern California... I'm still waiting. Potential for Noise: There is lots of road construction going on in the area and the airport is close... so this can be an issue- especially if you want to keep windows open. It was insulated well enough though that you heard little when the windows and door was closed. Bathroom Storage: My bathroom was very large, but with absolutely no place to put my stuff- except the narrow beveled edge of the thoughtful pedestal sink. Annoying! But overall I would probably recommend it... especially if you are using it as place to sleep and recharge.
Traveler type: Couples

While we were staying at the Porto Vista Hotel we enjoyed the location because it was easy to get to the places we wanted to ... go. Our room was beautiful and I loved the view, the only downside was the closeness of the airport but the doors blocked the sound when they were closed. We also enjoyed being able to watch to fireworks at Sea World from our balcony. Staff was wonderful and Valet was very on top of things. We also very much enjoyed walking around the town and down to the Marina, very beautiful, and relaxing. A+++++ Experience

Constant Vacationer Jul 11, 2009
Located by a cluster of charming shops in Little Italy and amazingly easy to get to, just next to the I-5 on ramp and less ... than 2 miles from the airport. The front desk staff are caring and friendly, and valet services (a new feature as of July 2009) were above and beyond any other I've had. The room was a little small, but very tidy, and with a very comfortable bed. We enjoyed the bar scene on the top floor, and the views over the bay.

Very disappointed
Mike Jul 7, 2009
This hotel DOES NOT honor any perks that you get from any website. Our reservation was booked for free parking and a free ... breakfast they charged us for the breakfast and tried to charge us for the parking. We also had booked a handicapped accesible room with a balcony, through Orbitz. We had to be moved, because the first room wasn't handicapped accesible. Our room wasn't serviced until 4:oopm. I had to ask for service because we had been at the beach all day and there were no clean towels, beds still unmade. We feel that hotel is poorly managed and that customer service is not a priority. We spoke to the manager when we left and he really wasn't very sorry about our experience, he told us there were no free breakfasts and that parking was inexpensive at this hotel. I do not reccomend it to anyone.

Dissatisfied Customer Jul 6, 2009
I had expected with the amount of money spent for this place to be a hotel, but to my disappointment it was more like an inn ... with our room facing the outside. The rooms were small and there was constant noise outside between the cleaning crew and people dragging their luggage back and forth past our room. The hotel has been recently remodeled and everything about it was beautiful. The staff was amazingly helpful, even had a ... free van ready to take you all over town. The beds were pillow-top and I had a better sleep than I even have at home! Hanging out in the hot tub was bliss and the bar/restaurant was really convenient. I would highly recommend it.

I would suggest getting a little farther out of downtown for nightlife. I loved Pink Bar. It was in a funky little neighborhood.

The pizza place that looks like a deli on India Street is a gem! You stand in line in a deli to get to the restaurant in the back.
