Trip to London Fall 2009

Aej Oct 23, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

The hotel was very nice and they had accommodated our request for adjoining rooms. The room was very comfortable and elegant ... and quiet. The location across from the Temple Tube was excellent, particularly after a long day of touristing. Close to many venues of interest and close to restaurants on the Strand. Lovely experience all in all.

Great stay but NOT a 5 star hotel.

Stayed for 7 nites. Fabulous River Views. Attentive staff took care of several "issues" in the room. Hated 19" old TV. ... This is NOT a 5 Star Hotel under any stretch of ones imagination. Maybe 4 Star, no more... Single doorman almost never present when we went in or out. Hot Towel Bar in bath did not work. When we called about it, they came in and had to climb up over the bathroom ceiling to reconnect it. They said they had turned them off to save energy. At these prices that is unacceptable.

Swissotel The Howard

wfminnj Oct 15, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

We walked EVERYWHERE - The Howard is so centrally located. We took in theatre, Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Harrods/Harvey ... Nichols, Fortnum & Masons' - it was all within walking distance. The "Eye" is just across the Thames, so is the Tate Modern as well as the cruise to Greenwich & Kew. The concierge was able to direct us to any and all things of interest. He even got us great seats to a show that wasn't on the discounted ticket window and knew where to get the best afternoon tea. London's definitely not cheap but if you're willing to do it right it's a great town!!

Review from a NY couple

WB Oct 4, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

Overall We give it a 3 1/2 Stars - The Swissotel Howard London was conveniently located right on the Victoria Embankment next ... to the Temple District/Circle line. We got there around 1PM from NY, but they didn't offer us an early check-in which was 3PM. We stayed in a room with a river view of the Thames which was nice. The Lavazza Espresso machine was a nice feature. My only two gripes in the room was that we ordered a king bed. They offered us a joined twin, but somehow, the bed was smaller than U.S. standards. I'm 6'1 and my feet were hanging off the bed by about an inch or so. The ceiling to the shower was low and the shower was partitioned by a half glass panel (no shower curtain) which meant water went over the floor every day. Overall, the staff and concierge were helpful and friendly. Atmosphere was nice although we didn't eat in the hotel, the bar and restaurants attempted to keep up with the other trendy spots in London.

Fantastic vacation getaway

We were traveling to celebrate our anniversary. The hotel was awesome! Perfect location, right across the street from the ... tube. The staff is SOOO helpful and professional. The first night we realized that they do not put a "top" sheet on the bed and we called room service (late). They responded immediately and brought up the sheet and from then on the sheet was always in place. Would definitely stay again.

Perfect hotel in all regards

Lisa Sep 14, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

We traveled with two girls, ages 14 and 15, and they loved the friendly staff and top-notch service. From the front desk to ... the restaurant staff to housekeeping, everyone was responsive, cheerful, and very helpful, especially with unexpected requests (such as needing an extra hair dryer, plans for a day trip, and checking on our transportation to the airport.) The location turned out to be perfect for us--across the street from a Tube stop, close to bus stops, within walking distance of theaters, and within easy access of many tourist destinations--we walked almost everywhere. Our room was surprisingly spacious and up-to-date for London, and the shower was fantastic. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat. --Lisa R

Wonderful Thames view

MB Aug 27, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

Really loved our river view. Be sure to pay the extra for the river side and get floor 7 or higher to be able to see over ... the trees. The Temple tube stop is right there. Walk to the area around Covent Gardens for lots of restaurant choices. Perhaps some would argue that this isn't a 5 star hotel but since I seldom/never book a 5 star hotel I found the expresso machine, complimentary tea, and the heated towel rack to be some of the very nice touches. Helpful concierge.

Money savers hint, Short Walk

Like all fine hotels the bar and restaraunts are rather high priced. We like to get out anyway. There are numerous local options within easy walking distance.

Money savers hint, Short Walk

Very convenient access to the Underground. Very easy to get to from Heathrow via the Underground for 10% of what a taxi would have cost.

Money savers hint, In Hotel

Consider including the breakfast plan as part of your package

--Mitch, Macon, Georgia Aug 15, 2009

Entertainment hint, Short Walk

Short walk to a lot of major London attractions like the Trafalgar Square and the Gallery.

--TravelerNatan, Newport Beach, CA Aug 14, 2009

Recreation/Attractions hint, Short Walk

The hotel is near Temple Church which played a key role in Dan Brown's book, The Da Vinci Code. From the hotel walk north on Arundel St to Fleet Street and turn right. The church cannot be seen from the street. Look for a sign that says "Inner Temple" and follow the passageway into the courtyard within.

Entertainment hint, Short Walk

You're in the heart of the theater district, so take advantage.

--Linda, Fredericksburg, VA Aug 10, 2009

Recreation/Attractions hint, Short Walk

Get a map of the sites and locations as-well-as a map of the Underground. The underground is very easy to navigate. Bring comfortable walking shoes and you're on your way to a great London vacation.

Shopping hint, Long Walk

There is shopping over in Knightsbridge. A store called Harrods, but unless you are a millionaire, don't bother other than to look for fun. Shoes were $1,000. There is shopping by Picadilly Circus and North a couple of blocks. That is a little more reasonable.

--Craig, Illinois Aug 3, 2009

Recreation/Attractions hint, Short Walk

Loads of London sights are only a short walk or tube ride away!

--JoEvans52, Sugar Land TX Aug 2, 2009

Money savers hint

get an oyster card for the underground. we didn't know and were paying gbp4 each ride per person! apparently you pay like gbp3 once for the card and then each ride is only gbp1, so it pays for itself almost immediately.

--Giles E, NYC Jul 11, 2009

Time savers hint, Long Walk

Remember everything is 2 to 3xs more expensive then in America. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Walk to the attractions if possible that way you will have more money to spend on something else.

Entertainment hint, Short Walk

theater area

Entertainment hint, Short Walk

Close to many theaters.

--Elie, Woodland Hills, CA Jun 1, 2009

Nightlife hint

Be weary of the promoters hanging out in Picadilly area. They promise to get you entry and reduced drink prices for a cover fee. The concierges were clueless about nightlift. Do your research in Timeout magazine or the Internet instead of winging it on the streets or asking the concierge.

--Sherrie, Gaithersburg, MD May 26, 2009

Entertainment hint, Short Walk

You must see a performance at Royal Opera House (book in advance) and Shakespeare's Globe Theater. Both amazing venues within walking distance of the hotel.
