It started at check-in when I handed my paper work to the gentlemen and he said I didn't have what was necessary(first time ... that has ever happened). Then he asked if I was alone I said yes and I was placed in a room set off all by itself (498), which was a little scary since it was my first visit to the island. When I got inside the room it appeared half cleaned. I sat on the bed and the bedding was in sure poor condition the bed sank to the floor. Ok, it only a few days I will live with it. I unpacked, than I had to use the facilities and found that the toilet was used and I mean used and wasn't flushed. I did report this to the desk and asked if the room had even been cleaned from the last people. I was assured it had been. I was traveling with friends so there were a total of three rooms booked by me, they had no problem checking in used the same paper work as me and got exactly what WE paid for OCEAN FRONT ROOMS, I didn't...will not be going back any time soon. Wasn't pleased at all. PS. And they need real help with the food they serve at the ocean terrace buffet. Just horrible.

Since this hotel is right next to the airport, if staying here it's a short 7 minute walk from the airport to the hotel. Took my group 7 min, and saved us $15 for a cab. $15 for a cab for this short distance is absolutely ridiculous.

Sonesta Maho Beach Resort
Ron Oct 23, 2009
The experience overall was a good one. The front desk staff was slow to process anything. I will say that they several ... "trainees" working. They were accomodating with late checkout, towels without a towel card, free hotel parking pass, and free internet service, which was the most expensive I have seen.

Great location, great hotel
Mary Sep 21, 2009
The Maho is located near multiple restaurants, lots of little stores, and a pretty good sized casino. Both pool and beach ... are just steps from the hotel. You don't even need a car when you stay here, but they do have a auto rental desk right in their lobby if you decide you want to travel to other parts of the island. They also offer a shuttle bus to other sites. The only downside is the airport noise, although I get used to it within one day. We have been to this hotel 20+ times in the last 16 years, and find it to be one of the better deals for our kind of travel (non-timeshare and eating all meals out).

Not Bad...But Not Spectacular
Savvy Traveler Sep 20, 2009
The hotel as a whole wasn't bad. The only thing was that our bedroom wasn't the greatest. The bathroom was quite horrible. ... Cracked tile all over the place, and the bath tub was absolutely filthy. Some nasty black stuff all over the tub bottom and the lining...forced us to wear flip flops when in there. Faucet in hotel only had one setting: splash mode. No way to reduce the level of water outflow - it just came out so fast, it would splash out the basin, and completely soak the floor. Had to use multiple hand towels, to line the sink so it absorbed. Front desk staff wasn't the greatest. Upon arrival, they already had my room and room keys ready, but the keys didn't work. Had to go down twice to get this situation fixed. At checkout, I asked for a receipt, and they said I would have to email Orbitz for an overall receipt. A weird comment considering we had charged drinks and stuff to our room. The beach was phenomenal, and the water is absolutely gorgeous. Watching airplanes come in was such a thrill, but if you're not a fan of the noise, then I'd say avoid! Overall, not a bad resort.

Third Time's a Charm--SXM
PDH Sep 11, 2009
This was my third time to SXM in two months. The room was a standard room, nothing much, the view from the balcony was of ... some tanks beneath and lots of mosquitos. Although I didn't stay in the room much, it would have been nice to have a view of the island. When I asked, I was told that these are standard rooms and that I would have to pay for an upgrade (umm, it's low season). Anyway, the room in itself needs an upgrade. I have stayed in other hotels that were 110% better in comparison (cost, view, amenities, etc).

If you like to relax, have a nice time with your significant other, this is the place. Nice hotel, their staff were nice. The ... island is small, so you could rent a car for just one day and enjoy the pleasure of the different beaches. There are clubs, stores near by. Also there is a pub near by, Sunset, nice place to chill at the end of the day. I will go back.

Hotel's best asset is that it's in the heart of it all....The Sonesta Maho is pretty much it's own little town with everythng ... at your doorstep. Island is packed with the friendliest people around. I was recommended the Sonest Maho and I recommend the Sonesta for affordability and service. Rooms are decent, not A-1 luxury if thats what your looking for...Their clean & comfortable & offer all the main necessities.....
Traveler type: Friends
If your looking for nightlife, there's Bliss which is a short walk on the beach or off a private road as well as Tantra (Saturdays) which is right across the street from the hotel.....The hotel is surrounded by shopping boutiques & a mini mart right across the way....Convenience is prime in this location

1) Hotel room better than expected (We received a recently rennovated room and it was very clean and comfartable with a great ... washroom. 2) Dinner sux. The food is not bad but there is almost no selection and the service is PATHETIC. 3) Service at lunch is not bad, and the a la carte lunch menu was quite nice. 4) I cannot emphasize enough how bad the dinner service is, every night I felt like making a formal complaint to the resort. It's too bad because everything else was very pleasant, and if they had a decent dinner, or some other restaurant options, it would have been a very pleasant stay. 5) We rented a car, definitely worth it to check out beautiful beaches!

Definitely visit orient bay, it's one of the most beautiful beaches you will find. St. Maarten is full of beautiful beaches, so don't stay only on Sonesta's beach, although that is not a bad little beach either.

We didn't like the location of the room they gave us, but we called and it was switched to poolside which was great. Some ... staff were helpful and friendly, but some were cold. The pool was awesome, never too crowded and you could always get a chair. The bartenders were sometimes slow. Breakfast and lunch options were great, but we wound up going out for dinner because the buffet at night was not too good.

Visit Orient Beach on the French side! Take a cab-even though it is expensive ($45 each way) we found that renting a car and driving there was almost equally as expensive and a lot more frustrating.

Hotel not as upscale as anticipated. Found staff not knowledgable about their own hotel. Was told they didn't sell stamps ... and they didn't know where to buy any. Three days later I found that the little store by the beach (which was part of the hotel) sold stamps!! The bartender at the hotel lobby bar was very s l o w and sullen. Not what you expect from and island vacation. Spent one afternoon zip lining. It was alot more work than anticipated but had a great time. Found the staff and food there great. We vacationed with 4 other couples that had been to St. Maartin before. I don't think our vacation would have been as memorable or as much fun if they had not been there. I don't know if we would go back there on our own. Much prefer Barbados

My Visit May 31-June 6
Three Musketeers Jun 8, 2009
This hotel was pretty much all we could ask for on our trip. We did not get the all-inclusive deal, which I think worked out ... in our favor as it encouraged us to go out and explore the island and other restaurants. The planes were noisy at times, especially if you like to sleep in. The planes did seem to stop at night time at about 9pm until the following morning. The hotel was decent, a little bit older and outdated in the rooms, but was clean. The showers and the toilets had very poor water pressure. The weak showers proved to really be a pain especially after those long days on the beach when you're covered in sand. The service was good, we had a clean room every day, although the front desk or concierge service was very hard to get a hold of at times, well pretty much most of the time. One receptionist who picked up the phone even once told us that we need to just stop calling and come down to the lobby if we have any questions, quite rude. The location of the hotel was superb though. I traveled with 2 friends, we are all in our early 20s and like to go out and party, so we couldn't ask for a better location. Both of the major nightclubs on the island, Bliss and Tantra, were within walking distance to us. And Casino Royale was right in front of our hotel, so we really had everything we needed. Overall, if I were to go back to St. Maarten with friends, and looking to party and have a good time, I would stay at the Sonesta Maho again. If I were to go with family or a significant other, I would try to find somewhere a bit more upscale and luxurious.
Traveler type: Friends
Rent a car, the taxis are quite pricey, they charge $10-50 to get pretty much anywhere on the island each way, even if it is within walking distance. Rental cars are only about $35 a day, or even less if you search for a better deal.
