We have been to Puerto Rico several times and stayed at a variety of accommodations. This time we decided to stay at the ... Sheraton Old San Juan and were thoroughly satisfied. First, the location is really hard to beat. You have the option to very easily access all, and I do mean all of the attractions in Old San Juan. For example, there are free trollys ( both air conditioned and open air) that stop practically accross the street from the hotel; on weekends the pedestrian walk way with vendors and entertainment is practically accross the street; the ferry to the Barcardi Rum factory is within a 5min walk; and the best thing about the location is that you can step out of the hotel and be in the "mix'. I am a professional Architect and Urban Designer as well as a professional photographer and convient access is a must for me and this hotel fills the bill. Now, Regarding the Hotel itself. The first impression that one gets from a hotel stay is interaction with staff. The staff at this hotel were exceptional...very polite, know about service, and very personable. Always with a very good attitude accompanied with a smile and a dash of humor ( sort of like a well made martini). The casino is always available and the rooms are clean and well kept.
Traveler type: Couples
If you have never been to Old San Juan, the first thing you should do after checking in is to catch the free trolly which has a circular loop route through Old San juan. This will give you an overall perspective through the area and it has several stops where you can get off, shop a bit, and catch the next trolly. They circulate on a very good schedule and you don't have to wait any longer than 5-10 minutes ( depending on traffic). I am planning on conducting a photographic workshop in the Spring of 20010 and will definately make this hotel the workshop location because of the ease of getting around by walking accompanined by easy free transit.

Nice place to stay. Great location!

The hotel is great. Very clean and the location is second to none. The lobby casino is fun if you're into that (not me). If ... you're craving for American food, there is a classy burger restaurant in the hotel as well. The staff were friendly for the most part, although the bellhops, I thought, were rude when I was checking out and leaving the hotel. Because I was in San Juan for a conference, I needed to store my luggage the morning of my check out. They seemed inconvenienced. When I picked them up later they again seemed inconvenienced. Lastly, the hot breakfast in their restaurant is just what I needed in the morning to get me going. Overall, I would stay here again, especially for the price (and location).

Of course, the fort nearby (long walk) is a must-see. There are a lot of great restaurants and night hotspots in Old San Juan, only a few streets away from the Sheraton. Many people might tell you to eat at Raices, which is not bad, but I personally prefer the more local-feeling Mojito's. The food is cheaper and the people are friendlier (and it seems more authentic). I also heard about a place called Barrachina, but I couldn't find it while I was in San Juan.

Great trip in Old San Juan
Travel Trooper Oct 10, 2009
This was our first trip to Puerto Rico. We decided that Old San Juan would be a great first time experience. Pros: Good ... location for city walkers that want to experience old san juan. A 15 or 20 minute walk to El Escambron blue flag beach. Cons Only one or 2 valet working on the weekdays. (overall slow service) Valet area was under construction Expensive dinning facilities. Overall the experience was great. The valet and desk staff were very friendly. We only had one incident with a manager at the valet she was was trying to get everyone to park in the street and leave there cars because the area was under constructions. That I will not hold against the Sheraton because it just shows a lack of competence on the managers behalf. The sheraton in old sand juan was a good mix between fun, excitment, and rest and relaxation. I would recommend the Sheraton to anyone that is considering a short or long stay in the San Juan area. My wife and I had a great time.

Finding a grocery store and buying snacks for between meals helps save money. We found several local restaurants that helped with the overall expense of the trip. Meals can be pricey in San Juan but it helps they post the menu's outside of everyone restaurant.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Sheraton Old San Juan Hotel. After our first night we were asked whether we liked our ... room. We said the room was fine but its location across from the ice machine was not the best. The front desk staff immediately changed our room and (I believe) gave us an upgrade to a larger suite with a very large balcony. Everyone from the valet to the front desk staff were very professional and efficient. The hotel's location worked out very well for us as we wanted to stroll old San Juan without making it a quest from the hotel to the city streets. And the roof top pool made for a nice retreat after wandering all day. We only ate breakfast at the hotel but did eat lunch at the Chicago Grill (which appears to be next door but apparently is part of the hotel) a couple of times. The food was good but don't order the "Chicago Hotdog" as it is their version and not close to the original. When we were asked by the waitress "how did we enjoy the meal" I displayed the half-eaten dog and told her it wasn't that good. She could have cared less. That was are only disappointment. We would hignly recommend this hotel and will stay here when we return.

There are several really good restaurants close by but don't expect to spend less than $40.00 per person (drinks included) or less than 2 hours at the table. Portions are not large and that's good. We Americans tend to eat too much. Enjoy the ambiance and the fellowship.

If you don't plan on spending that much time in your room (great location), but I was disappointed about the cleanliness of ... the room (especially the bed linen, of which I did leave the little card on the bed - TOTALLY DISREGARDED). Also, if you have a bad back, the beds are "TOO HARD". The La Lei Lo festival was nice (on every Friday) and a LA RUMBA boat pulled up afterwards. The shopping and restaurants are all in close proximity (but bring comfortable shoes to walk in) the less experience restaurants close up early (around 7pm) and the street vendors (recommend trying the cod fish fritters - "Excellent")are around until 10pm (but only on Friday nights).

We booked a bay view room through Orbitz and thankfully called Sheraton ahead of time to confirm. The hotel told me that we ... were booked for a city view. I explained that the bay view is what was requested and that we paid more money for just that. They told me to call Orbitz to get it straightened out. I called Orbitz and spoke with an extremely helpful Orbitz employee. The employee had his hands full with Sheraton however trying to get things worked out. After two phone calls to Sheraton (from Oritz) and one fax sent from Orbitz, we were assured that we would get the room that was paid for. The check in staff was very helpful. At first however they tried to once again give us a city view with two double beds. When I said that we were booked for a bay view with one king bed, the woman looked at the reservation and (I'm assuming saw some notes about the mix up a few days earlier) said "I see" and upgraded us to a suite with a bay view. The room was clean and comfortable. The view was amazing - looked out over the harbor. The view from the bedroom looked out over the city and one of the forts of Old San Juan could be seen in the distance, very picturesque. The bell boys were very polite and helpful as well as the cleaning staff. There was internet access in the room, both from Sheraton (wired) and from other random wireless access points. The pool is very small although after being in Vieques for 4 days before arriving in San Juan, I had no desire to use a swimming pool anyway. It was nice to know that both the swimming pool and workout rooms were available until 11pm just in case though. Parking is $21 per 24 hours. The location is superb. Anything in Old San Juan is within very close walking distance. We felt very safe walking around, even at night. I didn't eat at the hotel restaurants so cannot comment on them. There are so many restaurants in the area and all of the ones that we dined in were fabulous. There are also a few (very few and non obnoxious looking) fast food establishments in the area for anyone looking to get a quick bite before sight seeing. The only real problem that I had with Sheraton was their casino. I do not recommend gambling there! The dealers were the most unprofessional that I have ever seen! At the roulette table, they were more concerned with watching the soccer game than with actually controlling the table. They didn't even watch the ball to see where it landed. A few times the dealer (don't know what to call roulette table dealers) was startled out of his soccer gaze by all the gamblers' faces staring at him waiting for the payouts and for play to resume. I tried the other roulette table and was faced with the same lacksidasical service. My boyfriend, annoyed at this point left the table but still tipped the roulette dealer $2. The dealer then showed it to the pit boss (or manager, not quite sure who the were, but they were there the whole time chatting with the dealer) and proceeded to make fun of a lousy tip. At one point, the dealer was banging on the table in tune to the music. Is this supposed to happen at a roulette table, when a ball is in play??? The final straw was when a woman came to the table and didn't know how to play roulette. The dealer (shockingly) did give her a basic run down, but then, when she was not paying attention, DID NOT PAY HER OUT!!! The ball landed on 11 and she had her chip on 4 numbers INCLUDING 11!! I couldn't believe my eyes! She had walked away from the table at this point, and before I noticed or I would have stopped her. When I told the dealer that he had forgotten to pay her and told the pit boss or whomever that was next to him, they both denied it! I wasn't the only one to see it. I'm not a big gambler, and I didn't even lose any money at the Sheraton but I have been to Vegas and I'm quite sure that these casino employees wouldn't last 30 seconds working at any of the Vegas casinos. What I hoped would be a simple fun night in at the ...

Librarian Aug 22, 2009
The Sheraton Old San Juan was ideally located. It was steps away from public transportation and made getting to some of the ... surrounding shopping areas very easy. There was hesitation by the staff to share public transportation options (they were quick to promote using taxis), which obviously enhance the travel experience and make the stay in Puerto Rico more econonomical. There was also a free trolley steps away from the hotel that made travel and shopping in Old San Juan quite easy. The Yunque Rainforest day trip was incredible! Our guide was extremely friendly, and escorted us to the local eateries near the beach. The people are extremely friendly and helpful. The food was very affordable and quite delicious. For those a bit "traditional", there was an abundance of familiar restaurants to keep you in your comfort zone. You must visit Las Piedras (an open shopping area) the prices were astounding. Be prepared to brush up on your Spanish, many of the locals that we encountered spoke very limited English. Overall, this was one of the best Caribbean vacations that I've had.

Pearl of Great Price Aug 12, 2009
We saw this hotel a few years ago, and loved the location. We wanted to come back to San Juan and stay there for the ... convience to the area. From some of the comments online, we were a little skeptical, but decided to give it a try. I am glad we did, we had a wonderful time. From check-in to check-out, the staff was outstanding. The hotel was clean, our room was excellent. The view from our room was of the back of the hotel, but we didn't care, because we could walk across the street, sit on the pier, and enjoy the site. I loved everything being so close that we could walk, and take the trolley around the city for free. We felt safe, and when we had trouble with the language, people were willing to help. During our stay, the hotel only got crowed Friday and Saturday when the cruise ships came in, on Sunday it was back to normal. I had no problem with the crowd. I loved the free internet in our room, so we could stay in touch with family. Only down side, the hotel allows animals, not that I don't like animals, but when it rained, the carpet had animal smell. I needed some Febreze. Will I stay again, you bet, infact we are planning another trip next year, to the same hotel. We got our trip at a great price, and there were no surprise surcharges at the end of our stay.

Great hotel/location. Bad service
Terry Aug 3, 2009
Old San Juan is beautiful... just like the rest of the island of Puerto Rico. From beautiful beaches, to mountain retreats, ... Puerto Rico has a lot to offer. During our week long trip to PR, we spent 3 nights in different rural towns. But because of a great hotel money-saving deal, we decided to spend the last four nights of our trip in Old San Juan. The location of this hotel seemed ideal. While we agree that the location is great, the service at this hotel is lacking. We felt like we were 'just another tourist' to them. No one was friendly, or helpful. One example - one night at 1:00AM, the fire alarm went off. The entire building was evacuated (not because someone came by to let us know, but because everyone simply decided to leave on their own). No one from the hotel greeted us to explain what was going on or apologized when we were able to return to our rooms. No one even spoke to the elderly or children that were woke up by this. No one from the hotel seemed to care. I have other examples of poor service from the front desk, but nothing quite as bad as the fire alarm incident. I don't think this is a horrible hotel. I just think that they can do better with customer service. You can probably find a much better hotel in Old San Juan. Don't be fooled like me by a great money-saving promotion. Shop around and read all reviews before deciding what is best for your stay.

I am planning on conducting a photographic workshop in the Spring of 20010 and will definately make this hotel the workshop location because of the ease of getting around by walking accompanined by easy free transit.

Finding a grocery store and buying snacks for between meals helps save money. We found several local restaurants that helped with the overall expense of the trip. Meals can be pricey in San Juan but it helps they post the menu's outside of everyone restaurant.

The beaches are great but the rainforest in Purteo Rico is amazing. And you don't want to miss going to the historical forts.

There are several really good restaurants close by but don't expect to spend less than $40.00 per person (drinks included) or less than 2 hours at the table. Portions are not large and that's good. We Americans tend to eat too much. Enjoy the ambiance and the fellowship.

Take public transportation if you're not in a hurry. It's very easy to get around and extremely economical.

We ate at The Parrot Club and it was the best dinner in our week-long vacation. Not the greatest atmosphere, but the food was not to be beat.

Great area for shoping and night life.
--Urs, crest hill, IL Jul 31, 2009
there were these stairs behind the hotel that led to everything. I call them the "special stairs"

It seems to be that all the nice attractions are in Old San Juan but the beach is at a driving distance. So you either get attractions and activities or the beach. Nice area to realx in. I have to say it is the most touristic town and best maintained.

There is a free trolley, one block from the hotel that will take you to all the important points in Old San Juan. However, the locals use it to get around too, so it is often overcrowed.

Aqua Viva offered one of the VERY best meals we had (among many excellent meals). Parrot Club, Cana, Bombonera as well as Aqua Viva, DragonFly and a host of other great restaurants are all within a short walk from this property.

Lots of interesting local shops of all sizes and types of products. Really friendly people and fun to talk to. If you don't see what you want in one shop go next door.
