We had hurricane IDA sitting on top of us for the 5days we were there. Maybe had 1 hour of sun. Would have been much more ... enjoyable if weather had not been an issue! The resort itself was great. We only found a few issues, small gym, lobby area was enclosed and not real tropical feel, entrance to resort is not impressive! The staff and service was excellent! Been to the area about 9 times and this was the only time got home and didn't feel like we had a vacation because of the weather issues.

The hotel and location were great... Considering it rained everyday (but the day Hurricane Ida came through) the experience ... overall was good. I have been to numerous 4 and 5 star hotels and this one had great food which is hard to find. On the other hand the fitness center was smaller than like a holiday inn and lacked serious machines or anything, there weren't even lockers. The spa was even worse!! I mean I would rate it like a 2 star maybe 1. Here's the terrible low down. First It costs $55 to even enter the stupid place. Second every other spa I have been to, has male and female locker rooms with steams, showers, jacuzzis for each sex. Well not this one you have to bring your swim suit (which they don't tell you to bring and don't provide) because they are mixed sex. Third the overall quality of the spa area feels like your in a trashy cement zoo, no plants or decorations with a large cement wall around so you can't even see the trees and your outside in the pouring rain. Now for my massage, lets see first there are no private rooms they use tents in a large dark room with about 20 tents, so I had to listen to everyone else' s treatment along with my own. My massage was not so great either, I went in for deep tissue massage, lets just say I get a deeper better massage from my shower head at home. Other than the spa and the fitness center everything was pretty good. The food was great which I have never not had something to complain about when it comes to food. The service at the al a carte restaurants was good but the Buffet service was mediocre and it was hard to miss that the ceiling was falling down due to water damage. My experience was great and if your not into the spa thing this is the hotel for you. The Beach and Pool were awesome!! The rooms are comfortable and spacious.

Good except in the rain
Hurricane Sarah Nov 10, 2009
Well Hurricane Ida came through, so during the entire stay it was raining. Rain water accumulates everywhere, so there where ... puddles in the bathrooms, the stairs, just everywhere. I even watched part of the ceiling in the restaurant fall due to the rain. I believe when the weather is nice though, which probably is most of the time, it is a great place to be.

Secrets Maroma Beach
cmkasaras Nov 10, 2009
We were in a group of 20 so this review is based on everyone's opinions, rooms were compared Preferred club vs non ... preferred: Hotel grounds are beautiful. Specialty restaurants are so-so: Mexican and French not good, Italian and Japanese good. Preferred Club not worth the extra money. Only differences: private check in (regular check in never had a wait), "upgraded" mini bar- we got a package of M&Ms and a Fanta orange soda (this was seriously the only difference). Alcohol in the mini bar included 2 coronas and 3 small 2 oz bottles of liquors. Private lounge: had snacks (yogurt, nuts) and bar- but never saw anyone there. The site says that PC guests get in first for dining and have a minimal wait if none- this was never followed as we did have to wait and did not seem to matter who you were. Room: very nice. Little privacy- toilet only has a partial door and there is no main door to close to the bathroom, so dont stay here if you are shy about going to the toilet. Jacuzzi tub nice. Outdoor soaking tub- took 1.5 hours to fill, not worth the wait. Room service: good and fast Wedding review: Very disorganized. Wedding coordinator awful. Got the wrong menu, then the wrong meals. Had to pay extra $500 for alcohol at the wedding....thought this was all-inclusive and everyone had paid for alcohol with their package? Violinist good. DJ good but only played for an hour. Mexican trio only played for half of cocktail hour then left. Officiant dressed in street clothes and difficult to understand what she was saying. Golf cart 30 mins late picking up bride. Salon- great with hair and makeup.

The hotel was a great value --the best all inclusive resort on the Mayan Riviera Ive stayed at thus far. This is our third ... all inclusive stay there and by far the best. The hotel rooms were very clean and very up to date with flatscreens, ipod players, and refrigerators. We stayed in the swim in swim out room which was quite a comfort to have at your patio. The 24hr room service was great. The food was above average at all of the restaraunts and the beach was exquisite with plenty of palapas for all beachgoers. There waitstaff was very accomodating everywhere including the beach. Also, had the best massage I've ever had. Overall a great value [...]

Happy Anniversary Couple Oct 27, 2009
The room was fantastic. Each building had its own concierge and he was very helpful and friendly. The grounds were not as ... well kept as other resorts I have visited (the flower beds were in desperate need of weeding and we had to have a dead bird removed from the flower bed outside our patio area). The dining options were very good and the spa is incredible! Great pool area! Will definitely visit again...

Our Honeymoon Trip
Sugar Oct 27, 2009
We spent most of our time at the beach and the pool. We aldid take an excursion to swim with dolphins and snorkling which ... both were about an hour ride. We had a jacuzzi tub on our balcony which we thought was very cool. However, we found out that it was not heated and were not able to use it as we had wished to do. There seemed to be confusion on the tipping policy. The resort states that gratuity is inclusive but we noticed most people did tip and the workers accepted. This is not convenient due to having to carry cash and also unfair distribution of tips. With that said, everyone was repeatedly nice and helpful regardless of a tip. The resort should clarify their tipping policy. Overall our experience was better than any previous and will be hard to top in the future.

Perfect Honeymoon
Shan Honeymooner Oct 27, 2009
This is a beautiful hotel with an even more beautiful beach. We just got back from our honeymoon and can't imagine it being ... any better. We stayed at Dreams Cancun (a sister resort to Secrets) previously which we thought was very nice... so we had high expectations for this one. Secrets went above and beyond what we had hoped for. Like most other hotels there are daily activities at the resort, they offer activities outside of the resort and it's also perfect if you just want to do nothing and relax. All of the food is good. Himitsu is amazing... make the reservation to sit at the hibachi grill. It's truly a first class resort with a staff thats strictly there to please the customer.

Overall the hotel was excellent. The grounds and beach are among the best I've seen. The food and restaurants were very ... good, although the service was slow at times and the food frequently not as hot as it should have been. The room was very clean and comfortable, but the bathroom was not very separate from the rest of the room and this lead to noise and privacy issues.

This was our second trip to Secrets Maroma, it was very enjoyable, the only thing that could have made it better is if the ... hotel would provide transportation to the downtown playa district on a regular and /or scheduled basis, not that you'd ever have to leave the resort but just wanted to explore and see different areas of Mexico. That would make this resort even more of an idealic place to stay..(several of the other resorts, we have heard from different folks, do offer this service) Also, it is offered as an all inclusive resort(including gratuities) we found that gratuities were encouraged..this IS NOT all inclusive...at several other resorts we have stayed at, tipping was not allowed in any area, and was refused if offered.. the services offered were exceptional, as they should have been, but if you feel you have to tip EVERYONE who serves you this is a very draining experience...(why not pay everyone a little better and NOT ALLOW tipping, especially if it is written in the offer that these are included!!!!)

Secrets Maroma - Great for Young Crowd
willowdell Oct 26, 2009
This was an anniversary trip for us and we planned to be very lazy. The service was top notch, as was the food and the ... beach! The pool area was very loud and there was definitely a majority of 20-somethings at this resort. At night at the shows it was pretty rowdy at the bar. We upgraded to a swim-out room and it was georgeous, however the noise level of people walking down the pathway was quite loud. I'd highly recommend this resort to the 20-something crowd who are enjoying their honeymoon or want to party with a group of friends. We are not heavy drinkers or smokers and in our late 30's and felt slightly out of our element. The style of the resort is modern minimalist, so not the traditional mexican hacienda style. Lots of concrete, open spaces, big rocks and water features. We have stayed at more romantic/classier and quieter resorts.

I highly recommend booking your round trip airport transfer with Entertainment-plus b/c they were always on time and the ... price was great. I also recommend Mexicana airlines b/c the service was great, free alcohol and meals. The resort was absolutely faboulous! The beach was the best beach I have ever been to. No rocks or seaweed on the beach. The water was 78 degrees, very warm. Awesome food at the resort and the service was impeccable. The rooms are beautiful. I recommend the swim out suites. The resort is close to the ruins, reefs and the cenotes. I highly recommend going to Dos Ojos to snorkle in the cenotes. If you rent a car, be careful when getting gas b/c you will get ripped off. Apparently most gas stations accept debit cards, but we went to a gas station where the attendent told us they only take cash, which was a lie. Do not pay USD for gas, use your debit card or pesos. I highly recommend getting pesos b/c you will save soo much money. Playa del Carmen is very expensive, you are better off getting gifts at the resort or at a small shop near the ruins. Make sure to take bug spray b/c of mosquitos. Overall, we had a wonderful time!

This was our first trip out of the States and we could not have picked a better place. The location is perfect, white sand ... beach, super clean and clear, quiet. While we were at a mostly secluded beach we were still within a short cab ride to Cancun if we wanted to cut loose. The hotel apperance, staff, food, service and extras were top notch, A+ all the way. From top to bottom this location and hotel were perfect. There is not even the slightest complaint or problem that I could even try to make up. You will be more than happy here. Best service, food, grounds and location. Not to mention an absolute steal for the price.

We did the "jungle" tour as an excursion. It wasn't really a jungle- more like a path of brush... but riding the jetski through the brush to the beautiful reef in Cancun was AWESOME. Our snorkel guide was very cool and we had a great experience. It was booked through Aqua world at the hotel. They were late in showing up by over an hour- but they made up for it by keeping us out longer. Make sure your excursions don't eat up your whole day. Cancun was only about an hour and 10 minute drive total so it was not unreasonable.

The food at the resort is amazing. Try all the restaurants, they all have their own thing to offer and don't be scared to try some new things.

Avoid the time share salesmen after leaving airport customs, that appear to be assisting with ground transportation. These people are the only negative encounter we had during our trip. They refuse to take no as an answer. We were very surprised that the airport authorites allow this to happen in this location of the airport.

IGNORE the "official-looking" men in suits in the airport who make you think you have to stop and talk with them and produce your travel paperwork. They're trying to sell you tours, time shares, etc... Just walk through the airport to the outside, where all the legit ground transportation is located. You'd think we'd have learned this by now, but they look so official!!!

Bring mosquito repellant if you go during the bad season. Also, bring nice clothes for dinner. Guys must wear pants and they encourage nicer dress. Jeans are fine. Girls can get away with anything really. No sleeveless shirts for the guys at ANY time in the restaurants.
--28 yr old honeymooner, Ventura County, CA Sep 22, 2009
The only issue with shopping was that it was not far but the cab ride was spendy so we decided not to venture into the city. I wish we had and would spend the money the next time on that instead of the excursions we opted for.
