Attractive overall. No reservations required for dinner, a real plus. Entertainment a little iffy. Service was mostly ... good, sometimes slow especially restaurant on beach. Some leaks from rain previous day in hallways. Did not clean halls and pick up foods at times. Walls seem thin - could hear couple in next room and people above us at times. First Class Resort
Happy honeymooner Oct 19, 2009
The staff was very friendly and helpful. The place was beautiful, and we felt like royalty from the moment we arrived. Our ... room was very clean, as was the entire resort. We loved the fact that it was all inclusive, and everything was included, even drinks, room service, and tips. Some of the staff was so friendly and helpful that we did tip at times. The only thing I was a little bummed out about was that snorkeling was supposed to be included. We found out that all that meant, was that you could give them a deposit for a mask and tube, and then go snorkel on your own in the swimming area. You get the deposit back when you take the gear back. All snorkeling trips out to the reef were an extra fee. The staff all told us we could snorkel on our own, but we probably wouldn't see anything. BUT, we did that one day, and actually saw quite a few fish, and a starfish. We did do the Morning Glory snorkeling tour, which was an extra fee, but well worth it. We also did a day tour of the ruins at Tulum, and after that they took us into the jungle where we rappeled, zip-lined, and snorkeled in an underground cenote, which is basically a cave. We enjoyed that trip very much, and had an awesome tour guide. We highly recommend this resort, and would go back ourselves in a heartbeat.

Most portions are very small. However, being all inclusive, you can order anything you want. So we always made sure to each order an appetizer before the meal. We usually also ordered desert. The best hint of all.Have room service bring you ice cream,it's to die for.Try all the flavors!

The whole truth
Doc Oct 19, 2009
We went with 4 couples and had a wonderful time with our friends! The Spa was fabulous and the resort was nice but did have ... some concerns. One of our friends severly cut their foot on the bottom of the pool, they wanted to put stiches in but we would not let them!! The staff then proceeded to let him know it was his fault for running to fast in the pool. Never heard of picking up a fast pace while in the pool, then learned he was 1 of 6 that same day that sliced his foot open. Each night we would see workers diving in and fixing the tiles, however this did not work. They need to shut the resort down a fix the bottom on the pool. And by the way don't sign the release of liability document when you do slice your foot, because it is certainly their responsibility to maintain a safe pool floor!!

Staff was very friendly & helpful. I liked we did not need reservations for dinner and we were a group of 12. I think it ... was because it was an off season. It was not crowd which made it better. Did not have to hold chairs at the beach. October is a Great time to go. They could use a little better entertainment at night. and keep the outdoor bar opened later.

A no-personality, cookie-cutter resort
FlagAZ Oct 14, 2009
My partner and I stayed at the hotel for 11 nightslong enough to see whether something is this hotel's standard practice or ... just our unusual experience. First the good things: the rooms are nice, quiet, and have large bathrooms. There is an actual beach in front of the resortthere are resorts that don't actually have a real beach so I must compliment this. The breakfast buffet is quite good, with fresh squeezed orange juice and other juices, great omelets, and selection of many other food items that are freshly prepared. Though bread, butter (tasted like margarine&maybe because it was margarine?), and coffee were disappointing. The staff is very polite. Everything else about this resort is however less than great. 1. Service: The food services is extremely slow in the restaurants which I suspect may be by design (less food served=lower cost of the operation&I assume). The waiters never come back after they serve the meal to ask if everything is ok. The room was cleaned daily but not thoroughly (sand on the floor not swept) and the bathroom amenities were not replenished every day. 2. Restaurants: Not a single restaurant features a typical Mexican flair(!); all their restaurants (and especially the Asian restaurant) serve food that is extremely salty and not the quality you would expect for the price they charge. Food was truly disappointing. Maybe if you stay for 3 nights you would not notice but any longer and you crave something real. 3. Drinks: Because this is a more high-end all-inclusive resort (at least based on the price tag) we were expecting higher quality alcohol to be included which was not the case at allno top shelf tequila or whiskey and included wine was extremely disappointing as well (one type of merlot and cabernet sauvignon from Chile for red wine). 4. Coffee: Completely flavorless and even though they do have a decent espresso maker and grinder (Rancilio) the staff has to be yet trained on how to make a decent espresso. They clearly don't understand the difference between cappuccino and latte. 5. Beach: While the beach attached to the property is being cleaned every day the beach directly south of the resort has tons of trash on it. The beaches here are federal so they don't actually belong to the propertieswhich should be a one more reason for the property owners to clean also the adjacent beaches so when the guests venture out they don't experience beaches full of plastic bottles, old shoes, bottles from motor oil and similar artifacts. The resort may claim that it's not "their" beach but so is not the beach they actually do clean and it makes a really bad impression. 6. Technology: No wireless in the room, not even two cable outlets in the room (so don't bother bring two laptops). And the cables are two short so you cannot use your laptop sitting on the bed. No flat screen TV in the roomonly the old tubes. The TV thing is not a big issue for me personally but it certainly makes the resort feel outdated. 7. Little things: The resort doesn't provide any hair conditioner!!!! I think even Motel 6 does. When we were there they didn't even have one in their gift shop. They say the shampoo is "conditioned" but everyone with longer hair knows you need a separate conditioner. When you start examining the otherwise nice shower closer, you find mildew which should not be there for this price. Overall, this resort has a very "plastic" feel to itwith Wal-mart style décor pretending to be Italian and the atmosphere of Pleasantville. My advice is go to the south beach of Tulum and don't do an all-inclusive. The beaches in Tulum are in a completely different category that those adjacent to Secrets Capri.

We took this vacation because we desperately needed some R & R. This was the place to go. We never had to wait for a table, ... a pool chair or float, or a spot under a cabana on the beach. I don't think it was fully booked though. We booked an afternoon at the spa for aqua therapy and a couples hot stone massage - definitely well worth the price. The hotel is only 30 minutes from the airport. We took a private car. But we met some folks who said there's only one or two stops before Secrets Capri if you take the group transportation. They bring drinks and food to you while you're on the beach. The food was fairly good. The nice thing is you don't have to make reservations for dinner, only if you want a private dinner on the beach or if you want to sit grill-side at the Asian place. The room was great, plenty of space and very clean. We'd definitely recommend Secrets Capri!

Perfect Week in Paradise
Vince from the frozen north. Oct 12, 2009
Having traveled extensively throughout the Caribeen both land based and cruising, I can say that Secrets Capri delivered ... exceptional value for the price. The resort is much smaller than most and has an intimate feel. The resort is laid out very logically and it is easy to walk anywhere. The pool area and swim up bar are the center of activity during the day,The beach area is never crowded and is extremely clean. The water was a bit churned up but still beautiful after you swim out about 10 yds.The resturants were excellent, the Asian,Italian and Seafood House were equivalent to a good resturant in the states. The real stars of this property are the employees. Everything we asked for was accomplished with a smile and the response"It is my pleasure" .We tip, and even though it not required, the service level explodes.Several employees greeted us by name daily and were always happy to be of service. The spa is outstanding,Spa's can be pricey but there are always daily specials here, worth a visit. There is NO reason to leave this property if you are looking for R&R.They have theme nights and just enough activities and entertinment for diversion. You can have lunch served to you on the beach under your palypa and your favorite cocktails just keep arriving. We were happy to relax on the beach, swim in the ocean, dip in the pool and repeat this circuit again and again. The guests were a great upscale mix of people from all over the world ,from 21 to 80.Most of the couples were anniversary or honeymooners. We booked a garden view jr suite and upon arrival they asked us if we wanted to purchase an upgrade. We declined the offer and they still upgraded us to an ocean view for free. The television channels were good with the major network channels out of Miami, with HBO,Cinemax and Playboy premium channels. They also show movies by the pool outside on a big screen after dark. The sports bar had all the football and baseball games on.The breakfast buffet had the biggest variety we have ever seen with a nice touch of daily newspaper and fresh ground high quality coffee. They have a mimosa and bloody mary bar set up as well.Playa del Carmen is worth a day trip and is only a 15min($14 ea.way) trip. There are hundreds of stores there on Fifth Avenue to shop if that is your mission. For transfers,We hired a private car for $110 round trip and it was 30 min from the airport.Just go ! The experience is just what they advertized and they are true to their brand promise of "Unlimited Luxury" . We will book there again.

The spa prices are quite high at Secrets Capri ($80 for a 25 minute neck/shoulder/back massage and $120 for 50 minutes) so my husband went online while we were there and found a place in Playa del Carmen (about a 15 minute cab ride and $28 round trip) called Veronica's Massage. They offer great massages for $30 for one hour. My massage was very good but my husband said that the deep tissue massage that he got was the best massage he has ever had. Definitely worth the trip into Playa for the price!
--Summer, Irving, Texas Aug 31, 2009
Though it is all inclusive, it is a good idea to leave a tip (a dollar or two) at meals and for the maids. You will get stellar service regardless, but they do not make much money. We usualy bring a pack of $1.00's ($50.00 worth from the bank) soley for resort tips.
--Mayan Riviera Traveler, Michigan Aug 30, 2009
