Nice!

The staff was very attentive and even though its a big resort, it was fairly quiet while we were there. As all inclusives go, ... the food was decent and even though they recycled the same menu in each of the restaurants, they were definitely prepared differently and were of better quality than the buffet--which was still better than most others we have had. The room was beautiful and everything was in near-perfect condition. We would absolutely go back to the Riu Palace!

Beautiful beach, everything else so-so
THP Aug 22, 2009
RIU Palace Tropical Bay was a nice hotel on a fantastic stretch of beach! My only other experience with a RIU hotel was in ... Cancun and it's hard not to make comparisons, but I'll try. Things we liked about the RIU Tropical Bay: The best beach I've ever been to, the jerk chicken stand on the beach, the excursion to Dunn's River falls and Ocho Rios, and seeing dolphins swimming alongside our catamaran on the trip to Rick's Cafe. Things that were less impressive about the hotel: Internet cafe worked only 50% of the time, the hotel staff and people in Jamaica in general were polite but not overly accommodating....for instance if the bar was out of something (a certain liquor) instead of getting a new bottle from the stockroom or another bar on-site they just said we're out, go to the other bar....just not super friendly or accommodating. Spa services were good. Not much in the way of nightlife in Negril except the in-house resort entertainment. The men in Jamaica are quite aggressive (not physically) but there is no shortage of men waiting to talk to a single American girl. Overall it was a nice trip, but I doubt I'll go back to Jamaica anytime soon. P.S. Bring bug spray, and also bring something to relieve the itching after you get bitten. We used a product called "Bite MD" that comes in a small dispenser the size of a pen and works really well.

Bring a large pastic cup for your drinks as the glasses are very small. Bring bugspray (for your body) and use it when ever you go to the beach, spray the chairs down too it helps to keep the sand flies away. Bring after sun if you think you might need it the store at the hotel sells it for $10. If you are particular about toliet paper bring your own the hotel brand is not great quality. Margarittaville has a free shuttle on Tuesday's and Wednesday's at 5pm, so don't pay the $16 taxi trip take the free shuttle. Also Rick's advertised a free shuttle service we paid the $30 for a taxi, but i'm sure you could find the phone number online. Unless you plan on spending $25 a meal don't plan on eating dinner at Rick's. Margaritaville is much more reasonable around same prices as Chili's. Rick's is a must see for the sunset. Walk down the beach to the office of Nature, it's a tiki bar right on the beach, you can get a fresh lobster (they catch them that morning) and a beer for $20 (cash only) and it's a nice change to sit and relax away from the hotel and meet the locals.

From the day we set foot in the hotel to the day we left, the staff was very friendly and always enjoyed us being their as ... their guest. The beach was soo pretty and the water was so clear. We travel between may20-26 and it rain only one time. The entertainment staff is also great. Food was good, but it was a pain to work up at 8am to reserve for a sitdown dinner, but it was worth the early wake up. We didn't do any touring, the locals always trying to charge you more than they are required and we stayed in the hotel the entire vacation.

The hotel was very well landscaped. Some of the staff was friendly, however most of them did not seem to care about Customer ... Service. Our A/C did not work for 5 out of the 7 days. We complained to the front desk the first day and it wasn't fixed for 5 days. The dinner reservation policy is horrible. They only accept reservations at 8:00AM every other day. The beach was nice. The room was large, except two double beds DOES NOT equal a King!!

Week in Paradise
EmJ May 24, 2009
This was our second time at the RUI tropical bay we went 5/13-5/20. They have made some really nice updates from last year. ... They have name brand alcohol like absolute, bacardi etc which makes a big difference as last year we were a bit tired of all the Rum. The ONLY beer they have is red stripe. The staff are really nice, the pool is great and the beach is amazing. We spoke to so many people who said they had been to Mexico, Dominican and said this was the best beach they'd ever seen. It is well worth the additional money as the other RIU Club Negril is not as nice, we met several couples from that hotel who said they wished they'd paid the extra money. Entertainment is okay, breakfast and lunch were really good especially the Jerk Chicken, but dinner buffet was hit or miss. The food was always over seasoned, the meat was very fatty and covered in salt. Try the restaurants as you might have better luck, you just have to be in line by 8am. We also flew spirit airlines for the first time. The seats are cramped, and the floors are a little sticky, but we left and arrived ontime, the people were nice and we got to sit together and didn't pay the additional fees. You have to pay to check your luggage so look out for this hidden cost. If you want to guarantee your seats you will have to pay a fee online before, also a hidden cost.

Great time, but not "Palace"-esque.
Jenn Apr 22, 2009
Having stayed at the Riu Palace Pacifico in October and enjoying it immensely, my husband and I decided to book the Palace ... Tropical Bay. Let me first say that I love Riu. The mini bars are fanastic, the service is superb, and the complex is normally VERY clean. I just don't think that this hotel should be a Palace. In fact, I would think that Riu Negril, right next door, is more of a palace. Or Riu Ochos Rios where we were served Lobster twice in a week. I mean this place didn't even have jacuzzis! Two beds pushed together does not equal a king. The pros about booking a palace though are top shelf liqours and the ala carte restaurants. And I still had a wonderful time. The service is impeccable and the scuba caribe shop is great. Bring mosquito spray!!! And avoid bottom level floors where mosquitos are most prevalent.

Fantastic, Go there!
LaurenB Mar 18, 2009
I had a great stay at a Riu hotel in Cancun a few years ago, so when the Palace popped up on my Orbitz, I was definitely ... interested. I was not disappointed... our room was 5 star, the staff was beyond friendly, beach and pool were beautiful, and the food was on par with any other all-inclusive resort I've been to, if not slightly better. If you've never stayed at an all-inclusive resort before, you should know you're not going for the culinary experience. If you're extremely picky, this may not be for you. Let me tell you what you do get... a worry-free vacation where you don't have to balk at every $10 margarita you order. You can eat and drink yourself to death and not feel gouged. Breakfast is served in the main buffet room... smoothies, made to order omelettes, english breakfast, fruit, cereals... anything you could possibly want for breakfast and things you may not even know you wanted. Lunch is out by the entertainment stage... salad bar, nacho bar, sandwiches, burgers and fries, Jamaican food, etc. Slightly less variety here but your stomach will be full. For dinner there are options.... first is the main buffet. Perfectly tasty, a wide selection of food. There are also four restaurants... Italian, Fusion (modern style seafood, meat, nothing too crazy), Japanese, and Steakhouse. I thought the Steakhouse was the best meal I had there... I did not try the Japanese, my sister is not into Sushi. You will need to rally at 7:45am by the stage to sign up for either a 6:30 or 9pm time. Most people in line early want the 6:30 it seems, but don't think you can roll over at 8:15 and have your pick. Early morning reservations will actually be good for you because you'll also need to put your towel on a pool or beach chair at this time. Again, show up at 10am, there will be no pool chairs for you and you'll be lucky to find a beach chair. This resort seems to cater more towards adults though I did see several children... most looking bored out of their minds at the nightly entertainment at 10pm. This is also not a young people mecca, I'm 25 and felt significantly younger than most people there. Overall, I had a great time and would definitely return. Other recommendations... make sure you firm up transportation from the airport before arriving. Negril is an hour and a half from Montego Bay airport and there seem to be a ton of shady taxi drivers. I recommend Bigship Tours. You just go to the website, email and confirm your reservation with [...], and someone will be waiting for you when you land. Ask for [...], he's great. It was $120 +tip roundtrip for my sister and I, competitive with other transportation I looked at. The spa at the Palace is very nice, I got a great massage. If you chat with any of the people working at the resort, they may recommend you go to a 'beach party'. We foolishly went for about five minutes... virtually all locals, dark, crowded, scary. Stick with Rick's or Margaritaville. While it is all-inclusive, I did tip occasionally for excellent service. It was really appreciated. Your drive from Montego Bay to Negril should further prove that when you see how a lot of people live.

Minor issue Great stay
Jahma Aug 5, 2008
Loved the view and was treated to a wedding almost every day. Our balcony overlooked the gazebo in the yard where they held ... some of the wedding services. The people were friendly, lovely, polite, and complimentary. The only minor issue we had was a leak in the bathroom and later the mini bar area. It was fixed after it was reported. The other thing was that the fridge in our room was broken and never fixed, but we didn't follow up on getting that fixed because there was plenty to drink at the bars an ice was available if we found that we needed to cool our drinks.

Make sure to take the Sunset Cruise. Jamaica Tours on a Thursday included snorkling. Then the whole thing ends at Rick's Cafe with cliff diving. Take plenty of smaller bills. Do not accept the first price given to you by anyone unless it's a store or hotel labeled price. Aboveall have fun and go see more of the island then just your resort.

Riu, nice place to stay
Patrick Jul 8, 2008
Me and my girlfriend had a nice stay at the Riu Tropical Bay with a few exceptions. We were there for 7 days. Upon arrival ... the hotel staff were friendly and that continued to be the case during our entire stay. The food was decent, however the variety of foods didn't change much from day to day. Also, you have to wake up early everyday if you want to book reservations for any of the private restaraunts and the long line builds up fast. We used the gym a couple of days when we were there. Some of the treadmills were out of order but the gym was free to use. The water was so warm. Weather was decent, ranged from 80 - high 80s everyday. But it would downpour everyday from 1:30pm for about an hour. Just about everynight there is a show starting at 9:30pm which was nice to see. As for the hotel room, it was nothing spectacular. We tried to keep the room tidy on a daily basis to make it easier for the housekeeper to clean. There was a high step into the tub and the showerhead sucked.

The Riu Tropical Bay is a very nice resort located right on the beautifil Bloody Bay in Negril. Check-in was very quick and ... simple. We got very lucky with our room, it was on a second floor and had a view of the sea and beatiful sunsets. Rooms in this building were recently renovated and had all marble bathroom with two sinks. Our Room was beatifully decorated and had a new flat screen TV. Food quality and choices were really good in this all-inclusive resort. There were 2 pretty small pools, but with such a great beach - we did not even try swimming in pools. Water in one of them (with the bar) looked merky, another pool with clear water was mostly used for pool walleyball. The only thing that we did not like much was the nightly entertaiment, it was very medioke quality. Everything else we liked very much. This resort is relatively small in size, but is very nicely decorated, everything is located very close, which was very convinient. We will highly recommend this hotel/resort to anyone, and would like to come back there in a future.

Riu Tropical Bay is a very lovely resort. There is lots to do on the resort, and the 24 hour food options make it hard to ... want to leave the resort. This is my third stay at Riu. If there was something that I did not like as much is the food choices. They had a lot of food options, but the choices did not go together. For instance, they would have meat choices with random side dishes that did not necessarily go with the meat choices. They also did not have any beef or turkey meat choices for breakfast, so we had to work with that. Overall however, it is a great hotel with very friendly staff and they do work at trying to accommodate your needs.

Probably one of the best bargains in Negril. Staff is excellent. Jerk chicken is the best! Location is great too. Large ... suites. However, be careful with the beds. Cheryl Feb 4, 2008
We were very pleased with the hotel overall. The food and drinks were great and the beach was awesome. The only negative ... was the pool. It was a bit cold and dirty. Every morning I would watch a guy clean the border around the pool rinse his broom inside the pool, leaving a sandy scum to float around the edge of the pool all day. I was really more interested in the beach anyway.
