Relaxing vacation

The hotel was very quiet and not overrun by kids or other tourists. We felt like we had the hot tub, pool, and beach to ... ourselves a lot of the time. Our room was great! Updated decor with granite countertops. The best part is that we had built in speakers throughout the room--great for music! We also loved the full kitchen. Had nice stainless steel, Kitchen Aid appliances. This isn't the place to stay, though, if you're looking for a really fancy hotel with lots of activities and restaurants.

The condo that we stayed in was nice, pretty clean. The carpet had a few stains on it but was acceptable. It was nice ... having all of necessities in the kitchen to be able to cook there. The air conditioning on the other hand was not working properly. It ran the whole 7-8 days we were there and never shut off because it never got down to the temperature that we had it set on. It was very humid and we did have a difficult time sleeping at night. Other that that, the grounds are nice and so is the pool area.

Experience was fine. Some construction noise during daytime. With construction we had ants in our kitchen. Was sprayed but ... took 2 more days to remove them. Room was large. We did have to make sure to be out of the room on one day for no water for 6 hours. Parking was a first come first serve. Nice to have a store on property but costs much more than local markets. Sometimes front desk staff helpful and sometimes unfriendly. Nice to have kitchen. We had made plans for early morning so able to make breakfast in room and save some money. Maid service was great!

Fine, family-friendly getaway
Eric Sep 21, 2009
The room was nicer than expected, and the kitchen fully stocked with assorted cooking items. Would have been nice if there ... were spices and other such non-perishables in the kitchen, but it was otherwise complete and usable. Initially, we were disappointed not to have a bath in the room, but the walk-in shower was huge, and, in the end, rather fun to have. The grounds are superb, with the pools and gardens and grass that is tended to daily by a team of gardeners. There are two pools, one smaller and quieter, the other a bit larger. Both pools have hot tubs. The larger pool has a 1.5 foot deep kiddie pool. The beach right off the property has great swimming. Just a short distance north and south of the property are fun coral reefs. Snorkeling gear is very reasonable right at the hotel--about half the cost as down the beach, at the bigger facilities, we found. As we walked both north and south, we realized what a little gem this place is. All the other beachfront settings are in large buildings; while more of the rooms have ocean views, these other places were also rather filled with people. Only real complaint is the "activity fee", which seems to be simply an additional revenue generator; such fees seem excessive given the room cost (though the room cost did seem quite reasonable). The staff were all hardworking and very pleasant and helpful. The two times we called for assistance, someone was literally at the door as we hung up the phone. The few rules (i.e., pool closing times) were very reasonably enforced--i.e., no one came in ordering everyone out the minute the pool "closed"--much friendlier than other settings. We ate most meals in our room. We did eat out for dinner at the restaurant at the hotel; food was quite good, and the prices reasonable Lots of families with children--the setting seemed perfectly welcoming of children. While the location is great in itself, it is actually a bit of a drive to some of the major Maui tourist attractions (Hana is a 3-4 hour drive one way, Haleakala is 2-3 hours one way).

Great anniversary getaway!
burrowan Sep 19, 2009
Booked with Maui Kaanapali villas based on a recommendation from friends who recently honeymooned on Maui. Was a little ... hesitant given some mixed reviews I read online, but their recommendation was great so we decided to gave it a try. So glad that we did! While the hotel is a little older and maybe not as "fancy" as some of the surrounding mega resorts, it was well kept and clean and it had a few key benefits that made it a better choice for us (as a reference point, my husband and I are in our late 20's and were in Hawaii for an anniversary...no kids). Some reviewers commented on bug problems, we saw none of that on our stay...another frequent comment were the dated rooms..again, no issue on our end. While all are individually owned, our unit (227 Banyan) was clean and fairly updated. When walking through or visiting other resorts, we saw that the common areas and pools were wall to wall people. There was no swimming going on...it was more like standing elbow to elbow in chest deep water while loads of screaming kids splash and kick you. Given the calm and pleasant pool areas at Maui Kaanapali villas, we never had that issue and were able to fully enjoy the pool whenever we chose. Also, the beach area directly in front of the hotel (while within perfect walking distance to blackrock and whalers village) was much calmer. You could actually spread out a towel and have plenty of your own space on our section of beach. For snorkeling, however, you'll definitely want to take a walk down the beach to the sheraton. It is a crowded place to snorkel, but there is a reason for that...it was the best snorkel experience of our stay and that includes boat trips out to molokini and turtle town. The Kaanapali trolley stops at Maui Kaanapali villas on a set schedule every 40 minutes or so. We used this frequently during our stay even though we had a rental car the entire week. It was so convenient to head down to the more "main" portion of the beach area when we wanted to hit up some nearby restaurants or enjoy different scenery. The trolley stops at several other hotels along kaanapali beach and also drops off/picks up at whalers village so is a must for anyone looking to explore through that little area (you can easily walk the entire length of kaanapali beach and we did once or twice, but you won't want to do that every time). We took a sunset dinner cruise with Teralani our first night - really pleasant and absolutely beautiful sunset. The crew was very friendly and pleasant and had an overall great time...food was just ok, but I wasn't expecting gourmet. Also took a morning snorkel trip to molokini with Trilogy. Trip was ok, but water was very choppy while we were out. Didn't get sick, but several others did - crew was good with them and provided sea sickness medication, but it still looked miserable for them. The snorkeling at molokini wasn't great...part of that was due to choppy waters, but really not sure that I'd ever try it again...it wasn't spectacular so if there are other things you have in mind...I'd put those to the top of the list before a molokini trip. Trilogy also stops at turtle town...what a waste. We saw a couple of turtles from the deck of the boat, but once in the water it was murky and zero visibility. Crew on trilogy was also good, but this is one trip I probably won't take again. Hula Grill and Barefoot bar are both located at Whalers (within walking distance or take the trolley from Kaanapali villas) - had a couple of great dinners and lunches there...definitely recommend as affordable, more casual dining while you are in town. For a nice dinner out, you really can't beat Roy's in Kapalua (less than a 10 minute drive north). While Roy's is a chain (they have locations on the mainland US as well), we had our BEST meal of the entire trip at this restaurant. The fish was amazing and everything about the meal was perfect. We also ate at Mama's fish house. I think Mama's is a mus...

Great hotel for the money. The hotel is well situated on the island: 40 minutes away from the airport but very close to the ... sights. Very easy to find. The beach is terrific: soft sand, fairly quiet, great view of the sunset. Excellent snorkeling just off the beach to the left and also the right, facing the ocean. The farther right you go, the better. Eels, turtles and fish galore. The accommodation is surprising! The decor is old, but clean. This place is not the ritz, but it is comfortable. If that's all you care about, you'll probably like it. The Good: The staff are very accommodating and the grounds are immaculately kept. The Bad: Some of the rooms are better than others. Ask them if you can see a few of the rooms in your price bracket before checking in. The Ugly: They will hit you with a $12 / day charge when you check out whatever room you stay in. It sucks.

While the condo was immaculate and beautiful, I requested ocean view, and expected a lanai on the ocean. This one has just a ... "corner peak" at the ocean, and that is not at all comparable, especially when compared to my previous stays in Maui when ocean view was claimed. I felt like I was ripped off. The remote didn't work for the TV and there was only video, not CD player capacity. That's so outdated!!!

Had a great time in Kaanapali!
Fishing Dad Aug 30, 2009
We went sightseeing and drove all over the island - it was a great, somewhat central location in a nice area. Loved the close ... walk to the beach! If you stay there, take an early morning or evening stroll on the beach - it's beautiful! Had read the reviews on this and other travel sites, and they went from great to scary bad - so I was grateful we got a nice, clean unit where the owners obviously cared and took care of their place. Large-screen flat-panel TV and wireless internet was great to have (although I tried hard not to access my email too much). Orbitz was very good about warning us of additional costs not included in package (i.e., hotel service fee and airline baggage fees, etc.) I enjoy shore fishing, so I explored Kapalua area north of us and Ma'alaea cliff area south of us - caught my first papio on a Mark White plug! Aloha.

Clean, comfortable, updated, & spacious
Pat Aug 5, 2009
The hotel is nicely located on the Kaanapali beach. We chose a condo/hotel because it gives us more flexibility on meals ... because it has a full kitchen. We were able to go to the grocery store and pick up stuff for meals. We were very pleased w/ the entire set up - the unit was very clean and completely updated with hardwood floors, bamboo cabinets, granite counter tops, nice shower/bathroom, and island decor. The grounds were very well kept and we found that the trees/plants/grounds were better than some surrounding well-known, big-named hotels! The facility has a couple of inviting pools/spas, which were nice. But why sit by a pool, when the beautiful beach was just steps away? The price was definitely right! We were in Maui 4 years ago and stayed at a very nice B&B. It was a very unique, well-run, well-decorated, and beautiful B&B. We had access to the pool, the grounds, and the entire house, but couldn't access the kitchen. Breakfast was served between a certain time, which meant that you're kind of on a schedule... who really wants to be on a schedule when you're in Hawaii? This meant that having a kitchen allowed greater flexibility. Definitely go swimming in the ocean and rent some snorkel gear and walk over to Black Rock by the Sheraton and snorkel there. It is very accessible, but expect a crowd! There are plenty of other snokel spots on the island that any dive shop will point out. The only thing that we didn't like about our condo/hotel was that the HWY 30 was audible at times. Once the door was closed and the AC is on, then you really can't hear it. Fortunately, the lanai (patio) faces the gardens, so the building shielded most of the noise. Normal check out is noon, but we were able to request a later check out at 2pm because no one was checking into that room after us. Another plus!
