The Best of Kauai

This was our third visit to the Islander. We have found this location to be perfect for everything we want to see on the ... island. We love the rooms which are clean and the perfect size for the two of us. We can open the sliding glass door and listen to the waves lap onto the beach in the night. During the day we can sit on the balcony and enjoy the beautiful landscaping as well as watch the ocean waves. Also, the beach is right there, just a few steps from the building. The other patrons are adult and there seems to be little or no noise. The facility is near and accessible to resturants, shops, towns, anc scenic attractions. We are planning to visit The Islander again and again.

In just a short distance from the hotel, there are various types of shopping opportunities. Turning toward Kapaa and into Lihue, there is a range of small shops to mall shopping. Turning north toward Princeville, there are more flea market/local shops. Next door to The Islander is the Coconut Market Place with various types of tourist shops among some art shops, snack bars, and specialty shops.

Great Vacation, despite the rain
Momma Jan Nov 16, 2009
My husband, daughter and I all went to Kauai for a nice little four day getaway. We live in Oahu so we are already spoiled ... by Hawaiian beauty, but Kauai knocks Oahu out of the water. We drove to the North Shore the first day and checked out the lighthouse and Hanalei. The next day we did the South shore and Waimea Canyon which was awesome. The hotel is perfectly central to both which was great. On the third day everything was pretty much shut down because of the rain so we were stuck in our hotel room. The room was plenty spacious and comfy, and with the Coconut Marketplace literally across the parking lot, we found enough to do. The room had a little microwave and refrigerator so that was good because the hotel does not have any vending machines or soda machines. But the grocery store is right down the street as are a ton of restaurants and shopping. The location of the hotel was perfect, and we loved our oceanfront room. It turns out that the gigantic rain storm was actually a giant blessing because we did the helicopter tour the next day and the waterfalls were AMAZING!!! The pilot was even amazed with the size and amount of the waterfalls. I would highly recommend this tour even if it is a little pricey. Eggberts was good as was Pizzeta in Kapa'a. Overall, we had a great vacation and can't wait to save up our money and do it again!

--ALOHA JIM, PORTLAND, OR Nov 10, 2009
Small shopping center about a mile north with a Safeway and a Foodland (local) grocery, two or three restaurants and several variety stores. I think a car is a necessity on any island, but these were within walking distance, and the Coconut shopping center has a few shopping opportunities and small restaurants. The whole island is laid back, but offers a good variety of 'adventure' tours, so one won't become bored. Chickens are noisy and funny, but one of the features of Kauai. They DO wake up about 5 AM !

Well located, relaxed getaway
Constant traveler Nov 9, 2009
Well located in Kauai with grocery stores and restaurants about a mile away. Beach OK for sitting and limited swimming, with ... protecting reef offshore. They could supply a bit more beach furniture. Grounds nicely maintained and staff helpful and unobtrusive. Room had been renovated nicely with good view of grounds and ocean. One ice machine was broken, but one near guest laundry worked fine. Parking was a little crowded, but OK. Have visited Hawaii 11 times in last 11 years and find this resort good, relaxed, not fancy but very acceptable.

Hawaiians at heart.... Oct 27, 2009
The hotel staff is friendly. We've stayed here twice and have been completely satisfied with our stay. If we had to come up ... with something it would be that some rooms are too far from the parking lot. Bad only when you're moving your luggage. Otherwise, beds are comfortable, tile floors, seem to have been updated recently. Nice and can't beat the price for oceanfront on Kauai! The Coconut Marketplace is within walking distance and has a wonderful breakfast place, Eggbert's. A wide variety of shops and little eateries. Central location on the island. Makes it easier to see the whole island. We would recommend it!
Traveler type: Couples
Breakfast, Eggbert's is a must. - Short Walk For LUNCH - Bubba's Burgers is the best! And for DINNER - you have to try Sushi Busido's in Kapaa. The sushi doesn't get any better than that! And you must try Plantation Gardens! They have the best cucumber mojito and the garden island tea! That might not sound good, but don't knock it until you try it!

bluedog44 Oct 13, 2009
The rooms and the location are OK. The property is a bit old and there is not enough parking after 7pm. You have the option ... to park in a near by shopping plaza, but you have to move it before 8am or it gets towed. No resturant on site so there is no room service. Good for families but maybe not a honeymoon. Internet cost $10 per day in the room. The bed had a lot of miles on it and is past the time to replace.

The Honeymooners Sep 29, 2009
This was our first time to the islands and it was our honeymoon. We were upgraded to a ocean front view room when we arrived. ... The room was spacious and perfect for us. The staff was helpful and kind. Parking was free and no additional charges were added for oue stay. The pool was great with the bar opening at 2pm until 9pm with happy hour from 4-6. They had activity director at the front desk that we booked a Na Pali coast tour. This is so worth it. The tour blew us away. So much to do on the island. It was nice after all day adventure to come back to a clean room. Also, The Trees bar & grill was steps from our room and had live misic every night. We saw the Capt of our tour there that night and told us that The Trees was the new hottest little place on the island. Coconut Marketplace was also steps from our room with shopping and more eats. Check out the pizza shack in the marketplace. Some of the best pizza I have ever had. The location was great for us as we wanted to explore the whole island. All together our stay at The islander was great. The service was great and our room was better than we expected. You can pay more at other locations but why. This place was a great value for us.

Our room was steps from the beach - we could see the sunrise without even getting out of bed! The staff were very friendly, ... and most accomodating when we requested a different room due to a mildewy smell in our original one (the only negative I can think of mentioning). They also allowed us to check in an hour early. The location, while perhaps not a destination in itself, is perfect for launching to either end of the island - and you will want to visit each end several times.

Lots of restaurants in the area, since it is more populated with locals than other parts of the island. We particularly liked the Trees Lounge right across the parking lot, which had nightly entertainment and excellent small plates.

The location of this hotel is perfect. If you stay there and rent a car, you won't need to split your stay in two hotels as ... they advice it in Lonely planet for example. It's close to Kapaa where you'll find supermarket and some nice restaurants. If you're looking for a deserted beach, no need to go all around the island, you'll find one just in front of the hotel. The standard of rooms is more than ok.

The hotel is good for the price and for the position. It's perfect for exploring Kauai island. The room was big and well ... kept. The beach is not unforgettable because in my opinion it's not perfectly clean and above all it's not much wide (there is a narrow sandy space from the trees to the water); but in any case also the beach can be considered more than sufficient. The pool is small but my son loved it. Finally it's a good hotel with good rates
