We were there for a convention at the Salt Palace. We were happy there was a shuttle service. The rooms were small, our ... bathroom fan didn't work, our iron was broken & started leaking rusty water onto my white business pants. The bartender downstairs & restauarant staff upstairs were not friendly. But for the price & location to the convention center, it wasn't that bad of a deal, although I don't think we'll stay there again.

I only needed the hotel for a conference, so I really had low expectations.....the room was okay, but the heat didn't work ... though maintenance insisted it was fine. I froze both nights. Also, the toilet in the bathroom ran for about 15 minutes after each flushing. The room wasn't the cleanest I've ever been in. It's definitely an older hotel, and if you're coming to stay in wintertime, dress warm!!!

Husband and Wife Adventure Seekers Sep 30, 2009
We were only there for one night. We flew in to Salt Lake City to take in a concert. We arrived to our hotel at noon, and ... we knew check in time was at 2 or 3, but thought we would see if we could check in early. The lady at the front counter was very pleasant and helpful. She checked the available rooms and discovered that they had one cleaned and ready for us. We were able check in and go to our room, which we found to be very nice for its age. This is an older facility, but don't let that discourage you. The room was nicely appointed, with a nice sized desk, ample storage, and even a microwave and a refrigerator. The bathroom is that from the older hotel style, which is smaller, but it had been updated with granite counters, newer light fixtures, and the shower head was to die for (meaning, I didn't have to run in circles to get wet!). There was a hair dryer, an ironing board, and an iron in the closet. This was nice, since my wife forgot to pack her hair dryer. Our room was non-smoking, and smelled like it, and our bed was fantastic, very comfortable. A nice surprise was the patio door and small balcony. At 9 floors up, the view was spectacular. It was nice to spend some time just looking at the mountains, taking in the view. The hotel is situated perfectly close to everything. Temple square, the E center, the Delta center (which is renamed, and I can't remember the new name). We had dinner and breakfast at the 50's style restaurant. It was pleasant. The food was average, but the service was great. When I return to Salt Lake City, I will be staying here again!

Helpful, clean, a bit far from action
World Traveler Sep 24, 2009
We arrived earlier than expected and were checked in without any fuss. The front desk person answered our questions and ... provided a map of the area highlighted with places and routes we wanted. Unfortunately, the hotel is a bit far from activities for easy walking; six blocks in Salt Lake City is like 12 blocks in most places. That was the only problem we had. The free parking is a plus for an in-town hotel. The outdoor pool was fine in late September because it was unseasonably warm but an indoor pool would be much better for fall, winter and spring in Salt Lake City. A 12:00 checkout gave us a little breathing room to do laundry and use the pool since we had only a 3 hour drive to our next destination.

The homeless population is bothersome downtown but seem harmless. Just say no and they seem to leave you alone. It is a little more intimidating after dark so plan to use public transportation which loops around downtown in the evening.

Good Stay
Marc Happy Soccer Fan Sep 8, 2009
My wife and I traveled to Salt Lake City for a sporting event in Sandy, Utah. This wasn't a bad location to stay in for that ... event, as Sandy is just a small drive south. The hotel was easy to get to from the freeway and even easier access getting on to leave for the airport. At first you'll notice the outside looks don't stack up against some of the surrounding Hotels in plain sight. The lobby is small and congested. I was pleasantly surprised though at how quick and easy it was to check in and was treated very well. The room had a nice desk and entertainment center. The rooms were well put together and everything fit nice. We both were very comfortable the whole time. The shower had good water pressure and plenty of hot water. The fitness center was average and the pool was small (but lots of kids were having fun). The free Wi-Fi was nice. I was disappointed that there is no contenentail breakfast. Overall the stay was fantastic. If you like comfortable rooms and easy Hotel access this is a good place at a good price. If I had a couple more dollars to spend though I might have stayed at one of the much nicer looking hotels just down the road, but for the price point the Red Lion was a great value.

While this hotel was relatively cheap and is conveniently located to all of Salt Lake City's downtown attractions, the ... parking lot, exterior, lobby, and hallways all shout "this place used to be nice, but management doesn't really care as much as they used to". It is also right next to an "adult-oriented business" and just a few blocks from Pioneer Park, which is notorious for drug trafficking, homelessness, and prostitution. In general, the surrounding blocks would be considered "lower class". The room, itself, was the only thing that redeemed the experience. It was in pretty good shape, had nice bathroom fixtures, and a really nice view of the mountains. While I wouldn't characterize the stay as "bad", overall, I also probably wouldn't book a room here, again.
