Zero Customer Service

Upon arriving at the hotel, the staff sitting outside just stared at us as we began to unload our luggage. I went to check in ... and asked one of the gentlemen waiting outside to please call a bellhop for assistance and he replied, "We are the bellhops". ?? OK, then help us. All he did was pull over a cart where we had to load ourselves. When we entered the room, we did not have the fold out couch as expected and could not be moved since there was a convention in the hotel. The front desk did, however send up a roll away bed. The facility is older and furniture is mismatched, but I did feel like it was clean. Would I stay there again? It depends on the price (certainly not $200) and how desperate I am for a room.

A fun and thrifty Gaslamp adventure
Urban Adventurer Oct 26, 2009
I very much enjoyed my stay at this 1912 downtown, Gas Lamp district hotel. The rooms were small which was a surprise, but ... not a problem. The staff was very friendly and professional. The district was overflowing with good restaurants and shops: it was close to everything both new and old; and I could walk to all my desinations. Certainly the price as right. I look foreward to a return visit.

Stayed at the hotel while attending a conference at the Convention Center. It's about a 12 minute walk between the two, but ... with San Diego weather, who cares! Hotel was quaint, clean, and surprisingly quiet given its location. Location is fantastic. Eclectic and plentiful selection of restaurants within walking distance. Fitness center (San Diego Athletic Club) is a gem. Rooms are very small - glad I didn't bring my kids!

A place with style...
RJ71 Oct 19, 2009
Cool old style rooms, small and a bit tight, but we knew what we were getting into pretty much. I wouldn't stay for a week, ... but for one night, it was fine. Even on 8th floor, you'll hear noise from all the bars and restaurants during the night. Service staff was great! Cool old style elevators, but can be difficult to open and close...can be a two person job, especially with luggage.

Didn't expect much, wasn't disappointed
Nic Sep 12, 2009
Adequate. The room with queen size bed was OK for one but two people would be tripping over themselves. Found a roach the ... size of my thumb (I have big hands)on the floor, right below the air conditioner. Should have been easily seen by housekeeping so either the room had not been rented in a few days or they missed it. It's is an older hotel but adequately updated. A pair of tourists seemed greatly amused by the antique elevators - a small plaques in the lobby explains that they were really something when they were installed (near the turn of the century ?)but now, not so much.

Frank Swank Sep 9, 2009
This spot, the former Hotel St. James, has great charm in the middle of historic downtown San Diego. The rooms were just what ... you need in a clean and comfortable package, no giant tub or room for 12 on the floor. The staff was very friendly and the valet service is affordable with unlimited in/out privileges. We stayed for two nights then came back later in the week to finish our trip in the same hotel. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for an affordable nice hotel within walking distance to hundreds of restaurants, shops, and late-night spots in the Gaslamp.

great place to relax. Rooms are small, but it was fine with us since we were here for only 2 days. Our daughter decided to ... come with us, at the last minute. The staff was kind enough to get her a roll away. This hotel is walking distance from stores, restaurants , movie theaters. Brian's 24 restaurant is conveniently next door and their food and service is great. If you're an early riser like myself, there's a nice roof top patio where you can hang out and relax, read etc while the rest of your family wakes up. There also computers on the 2nd floor, and a small gym (2 machines) on the 8th floor.

Picked the hotel due to location and "authenticity" (i.e. not a huge chain hotel). The staff here is great -- very nice, ... helpful, and know the city well. Rooms clean and housekeeping does a nice job. Rooms are quite small with no view, but are quiet. Very easy walking access to almost all of San Diego, but sometimes immediate area can be a bit gritty. There is a nice roof deck!

Great location and friendly, helpful staff. It was the perfect location for the activities we had planned. We are not really ... night people but enjoyed walking down 5th Avenue at night and seeing all the activity. If you plan to stay here, especially on a weekend, bring ear plugs. No matter where you stay in this area you will hear the night noises and you might have a hard time sleeping. This really didn't effect us to much but we were there during the week. Other friends who were also staying in the area commented that they used earplugs to help reduce the noise.

My review of Ramada Inn & Suites-Gaslamp/Convention Center
Warren Dec 30, 2008
Hotel is relatively old and dilapidated, although some may consider this charming. Elevators were mind-numbingly slow. ... Rooms were small and marginally equipped. The bathrooms were very small although they were clean. It had a good location being very close to most of the major attractions of Gaslamp, but that was about the biggest selling point. It did have free wireless internet, although it was quite slow.
