Isla Mujeres trip
Juju Nov 13, 2009
We had a lovely time in Isla Mujeres, despite the rains. We weren't expecting anything like Playa Del Carmen or Cancun and ... planned on a simple, relaxing holiday--no frills and loads of natural beauty. Our hotel was beautiful, even if some people find it a bit too upscale for Isla. While it may be true that it doesn't quite "fit in" the environs, it was a lovely place to stay for our anniversary trip. I particularly enjoyed that we were there for Dia de los Muertos. Snorkeled at a place located directly next door to Garaffon--you'll see the same things and it's much less expensive. The gorgeous beach in front of our hotel was delightful, though a bit noisy due to surrounding establishments competing for customers by blasting mostly bad top 40 music. Highly recommended restaurants include Middle Eastern restaurant "Olivia", (this was our absolute favorite for cuisine, ambiance and fantastic service), and "Soncocho's" for simple, delicious, fresh-tasting fish tacos, and friendly staff. The Soggy Peso is a fun place to grab drinks and delicious nachos, (not in Playa Norte) and Fayne's is good for a lively, yet unpretentious scene--a bit too American-style for my taste, but pretty much one of the only things going on in this tiny town and we met some great people there. (If you want the club scene, go to PlayaCar.) We tried to avoid most of the places in the main area of town since the food is mediocre at best, and over-priced for Mexico standards. Rented a golf cart to explore the island which was great, (small Mayan ruin at the South end) and especially enjoyed the Modelorama!

Stay away from the over-priced touristy places if you can; not an easy task since Isla is so small, but you'll find some better spots along the side streets. (e.g. Olivia)

The staff greets with a glass of champagne on check in and do everything to make it a relaxing and pleasant stay. Excellent ... location on a beautiful peaceful island with many good to great restaurants in town. Only drawback is there isn't much to do on the island on cloudy or rainy day.

Everything was within walking distance. Motor skooters and golf carts were available for cost, but I walked everywhere, the distances to the grocery store, the restaurants, church, health clinic and entertainment were all within walking distance. Great time, really fabulous time and I went alone. I am a woman and all natives were outstanding and caring. No theft, no profanity, no vulgarity from any person in town toward one another,to strangers, or to me.

A little mishap at first in aligning my reservation with the proper room. Eventually I was able to get the type of room I ... reserved and it was very nice. Only being open for a year, the rooms are clean and modern. Granite/marble flooring was a nice touch. The shops and entertainment are within a short walk, as well as access to fabulous beaches. The staff, including [...]and [...]were tremendously helpful and charasmatic. They really made the stay so enjoyable.

About this Hotel, I have absolutely no complaints. I arrived at 10:00am and my reservation was not until 3:00pm but [...], ... the receptionist took my luggage to a hallway in the rear, where only employees went, it would have put my mind at ease to have them put away in a private room but it was alright, I guess. I stayed and waited in the lobby, all the same. I was given a glass of champaign and was offered more as time passed on. I was also told I could use their internet and I did. I was offered the pool to swimm in and relax, but I did not want to leave my suitcases there, nor lug them about. The attentiveness and warm welcome and treatment that day and throughout my stay was unbelievably unbeatable. Thank you very much, I will return there next year and will use your company to help me get a new reservation.

nice place but could use improvement
ac Sep 9, 2009
The good...got a great deal through Orbitz. Nearly 900 sq foot suite with jacuzzi on big balcony for a great price. Nice ... grounds, good location. Make sure you are specific in requesting the type of room if you want the jacuzzi on the balcony...otherwise it's only a jacuzzi tub in the bathroom. If you have breakfast inclusive it's nice that you can have this as room service. Where the hotel needs improvement is in the little things. Room service was late each time used and the order was slightly wrong twice. There was work going on on the water system and there was no hot water from mid-day to late afternoon. There were numerous times, especially my first day, where someone was going to call me back (internet password, changing rooms, arranging scuba diving) where it didn't nearly happen as soon as was indicated and required follow up on my part. Beautiful property, just need to work on the service.

The dive operator the hotel recommends is a good one...Pesca Divers and is as reasonable as any place I've ever used in the Caribbean. They do whale shark tours and fishing trips as well.

Let the food and drinks flow
Fred Aug 23, 2009
Great hotel. Practically brand new, huge rooms with clear ocean view, staff is pretty friendly. It was not crowded at all. ... You get thatched roof umbrella at beach, unlimited food and drinks bought out to your chair at no additional charge (with inclusive package)!! If you tip the guy a few bucks, they are grateful and will keep you liquored up all day. What is not to love??!! Food is decent. There was basically two restaurants open, so for a few days its fine. It would get boring if you stayed a whole week (but there are other restaurants close by). The price is unbelievable. Isla Mujeres has a lot of local people, so its a lot more laid back than Cancun. Good for families. If you want to go clubbing, do not come here. If you did this same thing in Hawaii, it would cost several times the amount (Hawaii is not the same as Cancun but you know what I mean).

The hotel is beautiful. It is a big commercial establishment in a beautiful rustic town. We like beauty and nature so it ... was a good base but we needed to get away from the sales, the 'deals', the hustle in the neighborhood to have a great time. When we did we were grateful (phenomenal local food, shops, and incredible waters). Aluxes makes a very good base of operations. The staff is very friendly and helpful. There were many young (18 - 30) heavy drinkers who were the closest thing we found to the Ugly Americans that we didn't want to see. No doubt, if we were one of them, we'd probably of had a better time than being around them.

The hotel is great !! It a brand new hotel, opened since February I believe... We really liked the hotel. The location is ... great. Orbitz has a mistake here, because the hotel is located in Playa Norte. Great Great location. The rooms are amazing, Clean and flawless. Friendly staff. sometimes they are a little bit slow [maybe beacause the hotel is brand new...] but overall they are great. ONE BAD THING: I don't recommend the ALL INCLUSIVE option, mostly because their dinner signature restaurant "SATAY" is terrible. take the all inclusive only for 1 night or 2, so you can enjoy the pool bar, and the cafe on the beach which is great...!! You got so many goo restaurants in the streets only 3 block away... You must take this hotel, it's amazing!!

I booked the hotel assuming that I was booking a room for two. Upon arrival I was forced to pay $ 560.00 American dollars so ... that my partner could stay in the room and eat breakfast. I was given no warning or options. It was too late to get a refund and book another hotel. I booked the room through CheapTickets.com. The problem arises when I book one airfare and the hotel. My partner arrived from a different location and there is no way to make clear on the website that the room if for two people even though only one will be flying.

Nice hotel, but no 4 star
Dave Jul 6, 2009
The staff was very friendly, but seemed somewhat unorganized which is understandable with a new hotel. We chose the bed and ... breakfast super saver rate, which I thought was going to be a king bed room, but when we arrived we were escorted to a very small room with two single beds. The staff member who took us to the room immediately apologized and upgraded us free of charge to a king size bed room with a hot tub on a large balcony. The hot tub was nice, but is not very private as there is a stairwell that looks down on your balcony as well as numerous other rooms and balconies that can see down on you. We didn't mind it that much, but some people may have unwittingly seen a show! The balcony lights come on at night automatically and we couldn't find a way to turn them off. Our room faced the downtown area and was right by a school with little children yelling and screaming on the playground starting at 8am. Even though we had all our doors shut we could still hear everything loud and clear from the streets and playground. This was rather annoying if you wanted to sleep in. We ate breakfast at the hotel and found that the food was pretty disgusting. The milk was warm, the orange juice was watered down, the cereal was stale, and a there was a variety of other foods that left much to be desired. The only thing worth eating was the omelette station, but it was hard to communicate what you wanted as the cook knew no english. We tried dinner at Satay, which is a Thai and Oriental restaurant at the hotel, but it was overpriced and pretty much awful. The pool was really nice and had a cool swim up bar. We enjoyed that and the beach was pretty nice as well. We enjoyed being close to downtown as there are many awesome places to eat within a few minutes walk from the hotel. We recommend Jax's Bar right by the hotel and Sunset Grill as well. Jax's Bar is owned by Americans and has great burgers and beer specials. Sunset grill had pretty good food and is aptly named as we enjoyed a beautiful sunset while eating dinner. Overall we enjoyed our stay at Privilege Aluxes, but would reccomend paying the extra money for a room with a pool or ocean view if you want some peace and quiet in your room. I wouldn't reccomend the all inclusive option as the food is pretty terrible and there are many reasonably priced places with excellent food very close to the hotel.
