Excellent snorkeling if you walk about 300 yards south just past the Cozumel Caribe hotel, there is a ladder. Start snorkeling there and float with the current back to the hotel. It's easy to be overwhelmed by all of the reviews here (I know I was!) The key is to know what elements you are looking for. ... Playa Azul is the perfect hotel if you want a quiet, peaceful, relaxing vacation. It's on the north side of the island, away from the noise and crowds, but there are always taxis available (about $7 US to get downtown). It's a small hotel (less than 50 rooms) and the service is attentive. While almost all other places I researched charge an extra $100+ for an ocean view, ALL of the rooms at Playa Azul have a wonderful view of the ocean (we fell asleep every night with sounds of the waves). TIP: request a room on the 4th (top) floor - higher ceilings and better views. Also, if you get rooms 400 - 404 you'll have a great view of the sunset! The resturant had a good selection, was reasonably priced and the food was very good (I read lots of bad reviews of the food at the bigger AI resorts). It's very clean and well-maintained. We did some great snorkling from the beach and to the south. Other than some resorts on the far south of the island I think Playa Azul has one of the best true beaches. Just don't go expecting sandy, Florida-type beaches. The island is coral - the beaches are rocky. That's what makes the diving and snorkeling so good. Our only complaint would be the bathrooms could use some updating. Also, no mini fridge in room - that would have been nice.

The front desk staff made renting a car super easy. We told them what we wanted and it was delivered and picked up for us at the hotel, and at a very reasonable rate ($50 for jeep). We had a dive trip scheduled the next day (we only rented for one day) so we just left the keys at the front desk and they took care of the return.

We went into town for dinner every night. We loved Casa Mission for its lobster and is in a great hacienda with lovely gardens. We also really enjoyed Casa Denis for red snapper, Otates for mexican tacos, La Choza for fajitas, and Pancho's Backyard for chile rellenos. We drove around the island and really enjoyed the snorkeling at Playa Corona (lots of coral) and Dzul Ha beach. The Mega store is good for groceries and had cheaper prices (sort of like a walmart).

This was my second trip to this hotel, and it lived up to my expectations. The hotel was in a lovely location and the staff ... is super friendly. The beach in front of the hotel is nice with lounge chairs and palapas. We snorkeled of the beach and saw tons of fish, a turtle, a few sand sharks, and lots of other sea creatures in the water in front of the hotel. The free breakfast buffet is the perfect way to start the day and the food is delicious. The hotel gave us a minifridge for the room and a pitcher of water in addition to the one bottle of water each day. The hot water in the shower came and went. The elevator was down and the hike up and down from the 4th floor was a good workout. The staff are very friendly, smile and say hi anytime you see them, and do everything possible to make your trip great. The beach club next door is connected to the hotel and you can get a great lunch there and bill it to your room.

The people we so incredibly friendly and seemed to genuinely enjoy taking care of us. My father (retired and disabled) had a ... health issue flare up while we were there and the front desk called to find a clinic that was open late at night (doesn't it always have to happen at night?!) and he got us a cab. When some medications were late in being deliveredy by the pharmacy, he called to track them down and made sure we got it. [...], also at the front desk, always had a smile for us.The restaurant staff was so warm and friendly. [...], [...],[...], [...] and the crew took EXCELLENT care of us. We looked forward to seeing them each day. And, we were shocked at how incredibly reasonable the food was priced in the restaurant. We ate at the hotel all meals except for about 3 over 9 days! Huge menu, lots of choices. Some items were so good, we had to have them several times.Hotel was wonderfully lacking loud partier-type guests. The other guests seemed to be mellow folks like us looking for relaxation, not a loud boisterous place to wreak havoc and annoy people. We paid a bit more to stay here and I am so incredibly glad I did. I would most definitely stay here again!!Oh, my 12 year-old daughter LOVED the turtles that roam around in a nice area near the front. My father and I enjoyed helping her feed them. Snorkeling was wonderful, too!!Loved Playa Azul!! There was truly only one thing I didn't love...the beds were very hard. But, it was easy to overlook because it had so many other things to offer.

Playa Azul

We just returned from a week long stay at Playa Azul. Our party of 4 included Mom and Dad with 2 young adults. We loved Playa ... Azul- it exceded our expectations. We stayed in a ocean view suite on the 3rd floor and had a corner unit. Those are the best for view and space. We had 2 large rooms and a large bathroom (shower stall only- no tub). A second vanity was located in the hall that connected the 2 rooms. 2 double beds were included in the bedroom and 2 sofas that converted easily to beds were in the living room. Granted, the decor was not sleek and new nor did it have granite counters. But the rooms were attractive and charming; the views were fantastic. The rooms were spotless and every request from new beach towels to a frig in the room were handled promptly. Excellent customer service was provided on all accounts. Breakfast was included and was delicious. A bountiful buffet was provided / fresh sqeezed OJ and omlets or french toast were made to order as well. We had a few glitches- the frig provided did not work, our toilet plugged and our rental car did not start one morning. Our frig was replaced within an hour and the toilet issue was handled promptly. When our car did not start, they contacted Avis for us and handled the situation and tracked the timing. When Avis had not shown in 15 min as promised, they called a second time and made sure we were taken care of. With our limited Spanish skills, this was much appreciated. The location is north of town and quiet. The currents were stronger in that area. It has a nice, but small beach with adequate snorkeling. Snorkeling was better a little further south. The pool was perfect and no deeper than 4 ft. 2 outdoor bars and an outdoor restaurant kept us happy. I highly recc Playa Azul; we would gladly stay there again.

The hotel was fine, clean and the breafast was good; the bar and inhouse restaurant were very good, but the wait staff kept ... on reminding people that the tip was not included with the tab receit (that's common knowledge, right?) There were ice buckets in the room but no-ice machine. Got one bottle of water, three out of five days - would have been nice to have a refrigetor in the room or an ice machine nearby. The hotel was pretty far from town; The taxi cab fare varied -- we paid anywhere from $8, $10, $12 dollas each way. It would have been nice to have a hotel shuttle service.
Traveler type: Couples
The first day we arrived we wanted to see the island so we asked for taxi round the island trip fare; the cab driver said $50 dollars because it was pretty far. Well he took us to the developed area which took about 15-20 minutes max. He said that was all he could show us becuse the other side of the island was undeveloped...We later found out there are two hotels and five restaurants on that side; we felt we were (????) that day. we stayed in town the rest of the day and paid $10 to get back to the hotel.

WellTraveled Jul 31, 2009
The Playa Azul hotel is just north of the airport on a stretch of limestone coast. The rocks are not comfortable to walk on ... barefoot and the snorkeling purported by some to be terrific is poor as there is no reef close in to shore and there is rather heavy boat traffic just outside the buoyed swimming areas. The hotel is small and very quiet. Our room was immaculately clean and was kept that way by the housekeeping staff; beds are VERY FIRM despite an "egg crate" topper. We asked for and got a small refrigerator for drinks and snacks at no extra charge. Shop at the Mega for very low prices on food and drink (no alcohol is sold after 3 PM on Sunday to 9 AM on Monday so stock up). The desk staff were helpful and the restaurant service at the free hot breakfast was excellent. The food was well prepared, tasty and plentiful but the fare changed very little over six days. Because the service was so good, we tipped well daily at the restaurant and at the end of our stay for the housekeepers as well as tipping the bellman on our arrival (two carry-ons only). On checking out, we were presented with a bill (all charges were paid in advance except one bar tab for 100 pesos) for tips for the bellman, housekeepers and waiters. Not a suggestion but a mandatory charge. It amounted to about 25$ US but the idea really outraged us as we tip for good service at our discretion. When I explained that we had tipped as much as we were going to and stood firm, the charges were canceled with the explanation that since we weren't informed of these charges by the desk staff on check in or by Orbitz, they would be dropped. BTW, on check in we were asked to provide a credit card for any "other" expenses while we stayed at the hotel. I declined, being wary of such things, and stated we would pay at the time services were rendered. Glad we did. This bit of underhanded nickel and diming left a bad taste in our mouths; the owners need to pay their staff a living wage as is done in Europe. This hotel is not inexpensive and ruined a classy image over a few dollars. Poor business practice.

David Jun 29, 2009
We snorkled, snorkled and snorkled some more. The two things that I didnt care for was the one time we were eatting lunch in ... the resturant area. There was a whole group of cruise ship people that came in. They were yelling at their kids from inside the resturant area, their kids were on the beech. One guy was just beyond the handrail vomitting. Not good when you are trying to eat lunch. One of them also knocked over a large plant scattering dirt everywhere.I understand that this was out of the control of the staff unless they wanted to loose money by telling them to leave. Secondly, as we were checking out, we were charged for maid service which was fine except for the fact that we recieved maid service for two days at 1.50 a day and the total was 10.50 for 4 days. You do the math. We were also charged for tipping the bellman when we had already tipped him. Its amazing how the little things make you not want to stay at what I would consider a nice place again.

Our room was great, with a wonderful view. My husband was not happy with the comfort of the beds. We were right on the ... ocean. It is quiet and very relaxing, the staff was great, friendly, knew us by name. While we were there, we visited Chi Chen Itza via tour bus, and we did the Cozumel Jeep Tour. It is easy to book tours through the hotel, but found better deals using Orbitz. The Orbitz guy came to the hotel and set up everything and he was easy to keep in contact with. The Centro was only a 5 minute taxi ride from the hotel. We recommend The Mission Resturant, they have great food, prices and great musicians. The hotel food can get pricey, so eat out in central cozumel a few times, you can find some great little places and shop a bit. We thought we were being careful on the tours but still got our phone stollen, but it can happen anywhere. Wonderful scenery, interesting people, wonderful history, all in all we had an awesome stay!

The golf was unreal, we saw crocs, ... wild boar, iguanas and a turtle on the course; and it was a great golf course(however I will suggest bringing your own golf balls!!! $18 a SLEAVE for ProV1's!!). The scuba instructors were helpful and nice to work with. The food was ok...but overpriced. The fruit smoothies were wonderful. I'd suggest eating downtown when you get a chance at the Hard Rock and the Casa Mission. The internet worked, but the computer there was on the fritz. We had a great time at the hotel, it was nice and quiet. Went golfing up at the Golf Course (green fees are free if you stay ... here). This was our 6th year in a row staying at the Playa Azul in Cozumel and golfing at the Cozumel Country Club. We just love the ... friendly and unchanging staff that always remembers us from year to year. The clientel are an older, friendlier, and quieter than most resort hotels -- and that's just the way we like it. The beach is not what it used to be after hurricane Wilma sucked all of the sand off of it, but it still serves our purpose (cooling off in the water and occasional snorkeling). When you combine the personable, quaint ocean-side hotel with a challenging test of golf located just across the street (bring lots of golf balls), it all adds up to a wonderful golfing vacation spot for us.

Playa Azul was a charming small hotel in Cozumel where you can experience the real Mexico. It was quiet and had a great ... location for snorkeling. My husband and I spent hours snorkeling right off the hotel beach and the fish and coral were outstanding. The water was the clearest of anywhere we've been in the Caribbean. We loved everything about Playa Azul--the solitude, the food, the room, and the spa. Service was excellent and all staff were eager to please and friendly. We will stay there again. Across the street are two great restaurants that specialize in lobster and seafood. You can walk there in about a minute from the entrance to the hotel.

There's excellent snorkeling at the resort to the left of the Plaza Azul as you are facing the ocean. Just stroll over to the large beach and enter the water by the sea wall. It is amazing how many of the same fish I saw while scuba diving were just hanging out right by the beach.
