Details: Phantom of The Opera

Based on the classic novel by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a masked figure (Hugh Panaro) who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it. He falls madly in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine (Sandra Joseph; Julie Hanson plays Christine at certain performances), and devotes himself to creating a new star by nurturing her extraordinary talents and by employing all of the devious methods at his command. Current star Hugh Panaro originally became Broadway's tenth "man behind the mask" in 1999. On April 14, he became the first performer in the history of the New York production to return to the title role.

The longest-running show currently playing on Broadway, The Phantom of the Opera became the second longest-running show in Broadway history on February 4, 2003 when it played performance #6,681 and surpassed the 6,680 performance run of Les Miserables, putting it behind only Cats.
