have been in hotels all over the world, this is a nice hotel, rooms are very typical for a 3 star, certainly not 4 or 5 ... star. would not spend the money to go back, would choose a nicer hotel down the street. Listened to doors banging all nite, thinking this was upscale, I didn't expect drunk 20 year olds in the outside hall all night. It is too bad that they don't put an age limit on this hotel.

The Uptight Pelican Grand!!
Pelican Grand Compound Escapee Aug 4, 2009
Imagine planning a romantic evening with the one you love, at a beautifully located hotel on the beach, feeling the ... excitement as you pull in front of the hotel and then immediately feeling like you are checking into a prison. It all starts with the ridiculous parking fee of $25.00 per day, with no option for self parking, something that should be stated clearly when booking. Upon check in we were greeted by a very nice gentlemen who became less kind as I asked a few simply questions and felt like I was an inconvienence to them. Paid a premium for an ocean front room, with the understanding that the hotel is smoke-free including the private balcony, instructed that smoking is only allowed on the beach or on the front sidewalk. Yet no ashtrays are provided forcing you to pollute. And in an unpleasant tone told that you will be charged if caught smoking on the grounds. When our room keys were furnished we were warned about the pool keys and that there is a $15.00 charge per key, should the pool key or the towel be lost. I could not help but feel like they felt they were doing me a favor by letting me stay there. I tried to shake it off and go up to our room which was very nice, except the room was not as clean as one would think. The coffee pot still had coffee in it from a previous occupant, there was sand all over the carpet in the front room leading to the balcony. I understand we are on a beach however we were ten floors up and would expect the sand would have been vacuumed. Opening the door to the balcony required the strength of a linebacker as the door was not aligned on the frame. We went down to lie on the beach and begin our romantic escape, while lying there trying to let go of the uncomfortable experience of checking in, we were disturbed by the hotel's beach attendant dragging and stacking chairs around us in his attempt to clean up and leave for the day. Let's say relaxing at this point was not going to happen. We went to the Ocean Grille located in the hotel, the staff was extremely nice, which made us feel a little better, but I was already in a picky mood by now. So when I ordered the JUMBO shrimp and Scallops for dinner and four small shrimp and scallops were delivered I was not surprised. We surrendered to the fact that our hope of a pleasant day at this establishment was not going to happen so we retired to bed, which wound up to be the icing on the cake, apparently the beds are incased with some type of thick plastic sheet that made our night's sleep very uncomfortable, as it felt like you were sleeping in a puddle of water, because of the sweat your body would produce from the sheet. We could hardly wait for morning to arrive to check out. Overall the hotel was beautiful, however having fun and relaxing do not seem to fit into this establishment's agenda. So if you like a place that charges a premium and asserts a prison compound feel, then this place is for you.

Enjoyed our stay
Jersey Shore Apr 22, 2009
Nice place to stay if you are looking for a beach vacation. Safe location on the quiet end of Ft Lauderdale, but easy to cab ... anywhere. The staff was accomodating and professional. We checked out at noon and spent the entire day. Coincerge held our luggage and of course they didn't mind that we were still spending money on food and drinks. Beach is small but it is not their fault. Contrary to other reviews, it was easy to get our car out of valet.

very family friendly
DONALD Apr 21, 2008
the pelican grand beach resort was one of the best hotels i have ever stayed at, and i used to travel for 16 years with a ... professional hockey team, staying in every kind of hotel. i have never met so many friendly employees as i did during my visit, from the very minute i arrived until i departed eight days later. these people were fantastic, AND HAD MORE ENTHUSIASM THAN I COULD EVER HAVE. i booked another visit before i left, in december, for 10 days, and decided to spend my birthday there in august, deciding on it when i got back home and thought about how much i enjoyed my visit to lauderdale. it was because the staff was top notch from the bellhops, the pool and beach staff, the front desk, the bartenders, the servers that i can't wait to return. did i forget anyone? during my stay i met the new owners and expressed my extreme pleasure with the staff they had assembled there. great job hiring some wonderful people. i wrote two notes to the owners about two exployees who were exceptioinal. i could have and probably should have written one about each employee. yes, it was that good. as a restaurant critic for the asbury park press (gannett newspapers) i thoroughly enjoyed the outstanding food, the poolside beverages (yummy) and snacks (make sure you try everything on the mennu). if i missed anything, my apologies. i recommend the PELICAN GRAND BEACH RESORT to anyone who wants to have the time of their life. i sure did.

Great location
Susan May 21, 2007
The Pelican Grand Beach Resort was an exceptional hotel. We were upgraded to an oceanfront suite at no additional expense. ... The rooms were extremely clean and well decorated. The beds were very comfortable and the view of the ocean was perfect! The staff were extremely friendly and accomodating. The restaurant fare was totally acceptable. The $12 a day valet parking fee was well worth the price. You call for your car from your room and by the time you get downstairs your car is waiting. The hotel is only a 10 minute drive from Las Olas Blvd. and is the only hotel we could find that was actually ON the beach and not across the road! We definitely plan to go back.
