I was a little hesitant about going to a 3 star hotel, but it was just fine. I upgraded to the garden view and the room was ... really nice. I really liked the kitchen, big fridge, good stove, even a blender, and washer/dryer, so we could do some cooking and save a little money. The pool was fairly small but I didn't mind, too much else to do. If you're looking for a big sandy beach this is not the place, fairly rocky, with coral, but I fould that all over Maui, we were there to scuba dive.
Traveler type: Family
Try to shop at the near the airport before you get to the hotel, there's a Costco, K-mart all kinds of stores. Much cheeper than the markets by the hotel. The roadside fruit stand a few miles south of the hotel is a complete ripoff, 7 dollars for a coconut, 10 dollars for 3 mangos. If you're looking for fresh fish check out a small place in Lahina next to the Maui Dive shop.

Overall, very good. The price issue? Our son paid $20 or $30 less per night [6 nights]; they had a better view, better ... (larger) microwave and stove, and a smaller bed (queen instead of a king.) Originally, even though we had paid more for an ocean view, I was staring at trees on the 3rd floor. Management moved us up to the 7th where we had a much better view but the smaller microwave and stove made it less than satisfactory for the extra money. (This is a condo rather than hotel.)

Wonderful time, fantastic views from the room, friendly staff. Enjoyed the beautiful sunsets everynight. Terrific places to ... snorkel all within driving distance. Did the Road to Hana it was beautiful but once is enough, ziplines, Sunrise at the top of the volcano, Feast at Lele's was fanstastic and worth the hefty price. There is absolutely no way to be bored on Maui there is so much to do, or you can just relax at the beach or pool. The hotel, car and airfare package from Orbitz is a great deal! I'm ready to go again.

Great Vacation Spot
Dad Aug 29, 2009
We were traveling as 4 adults - 2 parents and 2 college-age sons. We stayed 6 nights in our 1-bedroom condo with a queen ... sofa. The king bed was wonderful and the sofa wasn't too bad (for a sofa sleeper). The decor was very tasteful, tropical, and relaxing. We opted to spend the extra $200 for an ocean view, and it was well worth it. We spent lots of time on the lanai from which we could see Moloki in the distance and we watched several beautiful sunsets through 3 silouetted palm trees. Our room was on the 2nd floor (room 206) and the only way it might have been better was if we were a little higher so we could see the beach. But, higher would have left the palm trees out of all the ocean pictures we took from our lanai. Although we couldn't see the waves hit the beach, we could hear them! I wouldn't hesitate to request this same room when we go back. The daily maid service was nice. There were 2 flat-panel TV's (bedroom and living room), but we rarely used them. Full kitchen allowed us to cook a few times, which was a nice option over a hotel room. The grounds had lots of tropical plants and flowers and the lobby was open-air. So relaxing! We utilized the workout room once which had 4 treadmills/ellipticals, a full set of dumbbells (up to 30 lb.), and one of those all-in-one machines. We also utilized the ping-pong table in the basement on several occasions. There also looked to be tennis courts on the property. Once we discovered the undergroud parking, we would alway park there (it was less crowded). The outside parking lot was usually full, especially at night. The parking spots are pretty small - guess that's because most rented cars are small. Not having to park between 2 cars made getting out of the car much easier. Our room was considered "ocean-view", and as I said, we loved the view. However, there were some rooms whose lanai directly faced the ocean - those must have been the "ocean-front" rooms, which looked down on the pool as well as the beach. This condo is right on the beach - no roads to cross to get to the beach. We rarely heard outside noises, and never when we were trying to sleep. It was always quiet out on our lanai except for one morning when some noisy neighbors decided to eat breakfast on their lanai too. :( The condos are set up to have cross-ventalation and there was always a breeze. However, we opted for the A/C most of the time due to the humidity. It's a 15-minute drive to Lahaina, where we spent 4 nights on Front Street and did the submarine trip. The Royal Kahana is located in a less-crowded part of the north shore, but is still close to lots of activities and attractions. It's about a 10-minute drive to Kaanapali where we para-sailed and saw Black Rock. We loved staying at the Royal Kahana. The location, great condo, and relaxing atmosphere made us all not want to go home! Highly recommended.

We went to the Outrigger Royal Kahana for our honeymoon. It was a great condo to stay at, great location, quiet and very nice ... staff. The pool is a big small but the ocean was only 20 feet from the pool. I'd definitely recommend this hotel to a friend who is visiting to Maui, it a good balance between cost and value.

Staff was extremely helpful and polite. Couldn't ask for a much better view. The one bedroom was very comfortable. Loved ... the cross breeze we got through the condo. Rarely had to even use the air conditioning. The one day we needed it, it broke but the management got right on it and it was repaired the same day. There is no restaurant onsite so that might bother some, but was fine with us. Loved the washer/dryer in the room. The shower remodel was very nice. Of course, granite countertops would make the room great - but it was perfectly useable as it was. Loved two tv's. On the days we felt like relaxing my husband could watch sports and National Geographic and I could watch HGTV in the bedroom. The pool was a little cloudy for those who might want to use a pool, but with the clear blue ocean just steps away, we never bothered with a pool. Internet service in the lobby was way toooo slow but there was an internet cafe in the little shopping area within walking distance. The staff was very helpful and allowed us to select from a choice of rooms. The studio's were rather small and we probably wouldn't have enjoyed our experience nearly as much in one of those rooms but we were allowed to upgrade for a reasonable amount. Loved the view from the 12th floor. Would definitely stay in room 1207 again! Overall, if you are looking for a luxury hotel/condo probably wouldn't work for you but the Royal Kahana was nice, clean, spacious, nice employees and we would stay there again.

Very good and prompt service; hotel is older but clean. You have all you need in the room to cook som meals in(save some ... money): fridge, microwave, stove & all utensils--even blender & toaster. We stayed in room 718 and it was confortable. IF you have any complaints just call front desk & they will reslove imeediately. Shop at Safeway, not Star Market which is WAY more expensive.

Definately try the Gazebo restaurant at Napili Shores, just a 5 minute drive from the hotel. It is awesome for breakfast, but get there before 8 AM or after 11 AM because otherwise you will have to sit in line to get in. Also rent a board, surf lesson, or snorkel gear from Wayno at Surf Shop on Hway 30 & Lower Honopialani. Also the restaurant at Kahana Sands - just a few steps on the beach from the hotel is very good.

The Outrigger was a nice place to stay. We were not into the resturant scene, so the fact that we had a kitchen was very ... nice. We had done some deep-sea fishing and was able to cook our catch on one of several gas grills located in the pool area. We like snorkling, so the hotel was close to two of the good locations for that sport. We did the "bike down the volcano" tour and found out it was more of a "race" down the volcano rather than a senic slow ride. If you want to go slow and enjoy the ride down, don't do the tour. We booked the 60 minute helicopter tour on our last day and was pleasently surprised with a complementary upgrade to the best helicopter and a 90 minute tour. What a great way to end a beautiful week on Maui.
Traveler type: Family
Since we'd rather spend our vacation money doing things, we saved lots of money by going to the nearest Safeway and buying food for breakfast and lunches. The places we went to for dinner offered OK food at a very expensive price. Our best dinners were the fish we caught and cooked on the grill at the hotel.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Royal Kahana Outrigger. We had a beautiful view of the ocean from our 11th floor room. ... The room was very clean and maid service was very accomodating. It was nice to have a refrigerator/stove/utensils, so we could eat breakfast in the room each day. The beach was only a few steps away. The concierge assisted us in planning daily activities and had great suggestions for things to do. We were only about 15 minutes away from Lahaina, which is where we spent quite a bit of time. The front desk staff were cordial, but not overly friendly.

snorkel, theatre, zip lining, sunset cruises, deep see fishing, hiking. Staff was very nice and gave us a different room ... after we stated that the bed was to soft and I had to go to the chiropracter for a sore back ( never been to a chiroprator before). -Did not like that our arangements where cancelled when we arrived???? donot know why???? Staff was very helpfull to get us sett up quickle with a room. But did not get the $50 voucher for groceries, which was an advertisement from Orbitz for this vacation, because we had the so called "cheap hawaiian rate". I donot like fals advertisement. Especialle because the same trip was $200 cheaper 1 month after I booked with Orbitz. Orbitz would not change our trip the next day after we booked and we saw that we had a 6hr layover in Portland coming back. --Lots of difficulties and wrong info from agents on the phone during our 4 day battle to book this trip. lots of time involved and still did not get what we wanted!!!!
