Use the beach immediately to the north of the hotel, and bring snorkel gear--which you can either rent or just stop at WalMart and buy for $30 or less. Go early in the morning to avoid crowds, and watch out for the sea turtles, because they don't yield at intersections and they have the right-of-way! Don't touch the coral to avoid damaging it or yourself. And don't forget to wear water-socks to save your toes, because this beach is rock AND sand, and it is easy to get hurt if you don't pay attention.

Great location, rooms so-so
Carrolld Sep 27, 2009
Very much enjoyed the location, can't be beat with the lounge extending over the ocean. Every morning was a surprise on what ... you would see, turtles, fish and eels. Even though rooms had fresh coat of paint, bathroom was small with a small shower stall and sliding door. Mismatched furniture and hard beds. On the upside they were very big rooms and all had patios with very nice views.

Peaceful and secluded
IslandHopper Sep 15, 2009
We picked this hotel at random and fell in love with it. The rooms aren't beautiful, but the hotel is secluded, and the ... grounds are beautiful. The premises are right on the bay, and we spent a lot of time on the veranda on the bay looking at the fish, rays, and turtles. My only gripe is that the beds were a bit hard. Parking is only $7 a day, and we never had trouble finding a spot. The staff was great, and our housekeeper was fantastic. We'll definitely stay here again.

Nice Place, Spectacular Setting
teacherdee Aug 17, 2009
We were a little disappointed in the somewhat worn decor of the room, and the fact that the hotel gift shop was closed the ... entire time we were there. However, we really loved the setting, with heiaus on one side (Hawaiian sacred sites) and a fantastic beach with truly amazing snorkeling to the other. Green sea turtles and fish swam under us as we ate in the hotel bar/restaurant, which was enough to attract us, but the food was good, too, and was priced fairly reasonably, too. Service was OK, but the best service we got was from the travel consultant, who set us up to parasail (with UFO Parasailing) and to go on a submarine cruise (with Atlantis), and both were AMAZING! We are grateful for the opportunity to do each of these activities, really enjoyable! The breakfast buffet was also very good, though I personally do not like to eat with small birds ready to pounce on my meal, should my attention lapse. That was colorful, but unhygienic--I don't like birds on my table or plate. We would still definitely return to this hotel again--we loved the setting and found it close enough to other activities to make travel easy. We were also unaware of the hotels' shuttle service, and did not use it. The only big downside we found was the parking fees, which seemed high to us.

The Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort has one of the best locations on the Big Island with beautiful and historic grounds, a ... beautifully situated pool area, and adjacent to amazing tide pools for snorkeling. Attending a Wedding in Kona
Mom and Dad on Vacation without Kids Jul 20, 2009
We loved the staff. They were great, friendly and very helpful. The grounds were great and we loved the activities that ... went on as it was a heritage sight for Hawaiian culture. What we did not like at all were the rooms. Our first room on the 7th (top) floor was hot. Even though the air coming out of the vent was cool, it would not cool the room down because of the heat of being the top floor. It was a nice size room with a great shower and bathtub but to be cooler they gave us a downgrade to a very small room with a tiny shower and 2 double beds instead of a King. They said it was all they had. We still had a great view of the turtles (by the way the best side to stay on) and a great view of the grounds and ocean. So stay on the second to 5th floors if you want to stay cool. Also, the only air conditioning in most hotels there is your room as it is open air with ceiling fans, even for eating. We did get a nice breeze most of the time in the morning but hot in the afternoon until sun sets. All and All the only reason they got 3 stars is because of the staff, free breakfast, close to the snorkeling park and the very beautiful grounds and turtle lagoon. Oh, and we liked the shuttle to Kona. It was a great way to relax without worrying about parking in Kona.

Nothing Special
bigalsma Jul 4, 2009
We stayed at the Outrigger Keauhou Bay Resort from June 23-30, 2009. We decided to stay here because of the Orbitz reviews ... and because it was also highly recommended by a friend. We were disappointed. It was really nothing special. First the bad: There were very few food options at the hotel. The only option for dinner was the Veranda Lounge in the bar area. The food was mediocre and overpriced. The pool was very small and the water was very cloudy looking. The bathroom was ridiculously small. The shower was the size you would expect on a cruise ship. The housekeeping was minimal. It seemed that they only made the beds and changed the towels. They obviously did not vacuum. (A corn chip lay on the floor in the same place for our entire stay.) If you happened to knock a pillow onto the floor during the night, it would still be on the floor when you got back in the afternoon. The rooms were what you would expect at a Holiday Inn and not from a place with the word "Resort" in their name. The good: The location was fantastic. It was only about 10 minutes from town. (It is too touristy and crowded to stay right in Kona.) There were no other hotels in the immediate area. The bay was beautiful. You could sit in the lounge overlooking the water. Sea turtles were everywhere. We went walking by the water and were able to see some close up. Daily breakfast was offered with a good variety, but the quality was nothing exceptional. The hotel was very quiet, with the exception of the day of the marathon. Free internet access was available in the rooms. Overall, if you are looking for just an acceptable place to stay, then Keauhou Beach Resort is for you. If you are looking for a special place to stay, look elsewhere.

We booked a deluxe ocean view room for our honeymoon. The view was fantastic and the breakfast was also very good. The ... hotel does not offer room service and the dinner menu is limited, so if those things are important, then another hotel should be considered. Loved the friendly service, daily breakfast, quiet atmosphere and the views of the water, turtles and Hawaiian temple. My husband and I stayed at this hotel 6 years ago and enjoyed the location and service so we came back this year in 2009 and ... had similar experiences. The staff is friendly and professional, the view is gorgeous, the beaches to snorkel are close by, and the shopping center up the hill has some great restaurants if you don't want to drive to eat dinner. We had dinner on the deck several times and we were happy with the food, service and prices. You can't beat the view of the turtles and the sunset. Very romantic. Friday night music was traditional Hawaiian and added to the ambience. We are already planning another trip to Hawaii and we will stay for our third time at the Outrigger Keauhou and would recommend to our friends and family.

My husband and I aren't into the evening entertainment so we try to find a restaurant close to the hotel that we can walk to so if we decide to have a few alcoholic beverages we aren't driving. We found that the hotel deck serves good food for reasonable prices and the view is wonderful. We also ate at several of the restaurants at a shopping center up the hill and to the south of the hotel. We had pizza, burgers, & Mexican food. All good prices and great ambience for couples.
