Western North Island
A huge, snow-topped volcano dominates the air space in this captivating world of rivers, country towns, peaceful pastures and friendly cities. Embark on an intrepid adventure or succumb to the charms of New Zealand country life. Around Wanganui and Taranaki, relaxation and renewal are inescapable.
Rolling gently downhill, from Tongariro National Park to the Tasman Sea, the Whanganui River is our longest navigable waterway. Canoe and kayak safaris begin near Taumarunui and travel through Whanganui National Park. Alternatively, you can drive to Pipiriki and catch a jet boat to the mysterious Bridge to Nowhere - a poignant reminder of the settlers who once tried to live here. Near the mouth of the mighty river is the historic city of Wanganui. Discover heritage buildings, a fascinating elevator inside a hill and a restored paddle steamer for sedate river cruises.
The Egmont National Park, with the volcano Taranaki at its centre, is a compelling reason to visit this part of New Zealand. There are more than 300 kilometres of tracks to hike and guided summit climbs can be organised - the view from the top is mind blowing. If you want to overload on beach scenery follow Surf Highway 45, the road that hugs the coast between Hawera and New Plymouth. Another of our best kept secrets is the Forgotten World Highway - a journey that’s remote and mysterious to the extreme.
Mount Taranaki
Taranaki’s famous 2518 metre dormant volcano sits at the centre of beautiful Egmont National Park. The park offers outstanding hiking, climbing, skiing and photography opportunities.
The surf highway
The close proximity of the mountain to the sea is one of Taranaki’s special features. It takes only 30 minutes to drive from mountain plateau to beach – making it possible to ski and surf in the same day.
River adventures
Every river has its specialities. The Whanganui offers canoe and kayak safaris; the Rangitikei provides thrills with bungy jumping and rafting; the Manawatu has jetboating and kayaking in the gorge.
Farming life
The region is a major agricultural power, leading in beef, sheep and deer production. Farmstays allow visitors to experience life on a New Zealand farm, not to mention some excellent country cooking.
