Great all inclusive option in Cozumel
1tanneddude Oct 28, 2009
My wife and I had never stayed at an all inclusive before this trip. This will not be the last. The staff at the Melia ... could not do enough for us. Some of the best service and nicest staff you could ask for. When we arrived they did set us up in a smoking room as I didn't state a preference when booking. Not only did they find us a non smoking room, they upgraded us to beachfront at no additional cost. The hotel did not have a lot of restaraunt options. It was not great, but really good food. The buffet does get a little old, but [...] cooks up a mean omlette and other breakfast choices. They have good dinner selections that change up everyday and they will grill up fresh steak, fish or chicken every night. I've never eaten so much desert in my life...too many choices, had to try them all. And the service was outstanding. They have a snack shack that serves up a pretty good burger, casadillas, buffallo wings and the like. Their formal dinning is reservation only at 6:30 and 8:30. Again, real good...not great. The pools were fantastic, with larger shallower pool that usually attracted the kids and families, and a deeper pool with a bar that usually just had adults. Great for realaxing without the kid noise. The beach was even better. There is a bit of a trade off with the hotels on the north end. The Melia sits right on the beach at the north end and your room will either be on the beach or have a great view, but the beaches on the north end are not as nice. They have more sea grass and are not as pristine as the clear white sand beaches to the south. The resorts on the south end have the great beaches, but most have no view and the rooms are nestled back off the beach. It's a bit of a trade off and for us the Melia won out. The beach at the Melia also has some great snorkling nearby. They did have some kind of entertainment lined up every night. Not LasVegas caliber, and sometimes a little corny, but pretty funny most nights. Much of the staff are the entertainers. Kinda like a cruise ship. By day they hand out towels and lead beach volleyball, by night singers and dancers. The only negative to the whole 10 days was getting set up for a dive by an Orbitz rep, then showing up at the dock, only to be told they had no room today. Orbitz did refund the dive and the taxi, but it was a waste of time and disappointing. Being all inclusive, I half expected a bunch of young adults partying at the many open bars and much more of a party scene. This too was a nice surprise as is stayed pretty low key during our 11 days there. Very relaxing! We travel often, at least 2 trips a year in and out of the country. This was a surprisingly good value for our money and one of our best vacations ever. Can't wait to go back!

About 4 par fives down the beach, or 2000 yds, there is a little cove. If you put in there and snorkle, the current will take you along the beach back to the pier. We saw squid, barracuda, lobster, eel, and much much more...good snorkling. Better than some of the big reefs we went to. Also...do the jeep tour! Great all day tour of the island, Myan ruins, Tequilla factory, and beaches....fantastico!

My stay at the Melia Resort was awesome! Everything was clean and the staff very friendly. Breakfast was the best meal of ... the day, and dinner was good. I think that the resort could improve on their lunch selection. The beach area was perfect. There were more than enough chairs and never crowded. I think that they could improve the atmosphere at the main pool by playing some music. Also, the bar at the main pool closed at 6. It would be nice if they kept that bar opened a little longer.

My biggest disappointment was not receiving any of the updates I was told I was going to get by Orbitz special offers on ... their web page ([...])Even when I motioned it to the lady at the reception she did nothing. She motioned I already had a beach front room. The thing was that I had paid for that room with an ocean view. I was expecting a better room than the one I had paid for. They were only full 25% so they could had offer a better room. They also offer in room wireless and that is not a correct statement. According to the receptionist I had to go to the lobby to use the wireless service or I could rent one of their own computer or buy a card to be able to use the ones in the computer room.

Good-Please Read you won't be sorry!!!!!
Grunzwest Sep 8, 2009
Long winded, but worth the read. To begin with we got a rediculously good deal for 6 nights.....surch for on-line coupons, ... they are worth it!!! Good overall. Everything we expected for a three star resort. Should you choose to use it, the WIFI is worthless in the room, and just OK in the lobby you need a code, which is available at the front desk. The fine dining restaurant is good. Should have long pants to go in, but you can get away with shorts. You want reservations? Wake up early!!! You need to reserve in person at the front desk. They start taking reservations around 6:30-6:45 am, and are usually full (only two eating times per night) by 7:15 to 7:30 am. They only take same day reservations. You want to be remembered, tip the main guy the first night you go!!!! It also helps you get in if you are unable to get reservations on subsequent nights. Drinks are weak at all the bars, but tip the tender daily or for the stay and they will improve. Otherwise drink twice as many or be happy with your thriftyness! If you have any problems, be persistent, unfortunately the couple we went with had air conditioning problems, and it took two days of complaining to get moved, but they were upgraded. Good luck! If you expect too much, you will be disappointed!!!!

The beach is good. the water has many clear spots, and also many rocks and sea weed. If you want good close snorkeling, go to the otherside of the peer on the south side of the resort. Taxis are cheap, you just can't get one when you arrive at the airport due to some deal struck between the time shares and the airport. Shuttles are available. Taxis to town from the hotel are about 70-80 pesos. Car rentals. Rent a car in town. The hotel cars are poorly kept, and pricey. Jeep with insurance was almost $95 a day and the power steering went out after we were 3/4 of the way around the island, and the clutch was a lot of fun, whiplash(yes I know how to drive a stick). Same for Playa del Carmen, rent it at the peer, but don't go to the second Budget rent a car. While they look more official, they are not affiliated with the US company and they are more expensive, than the first one you will come to. I rented a car with insurance for a day for $35. Be wary of the names you are most familiar with!

Melia Cozumel August 2009
Punta Sur Diver Aug 31, 2009
We stayed at the Melia Cozumel August 8th through 15th. Overall, the Melia was great. The food was very good. The buffet ... always had different stuff every day. Except for breakfast, I don't recall eating the same thing twice. We ate at the restaurant once (kept forgetting to make reservtions) and it was very good but had limited a selection. Bring long pants if you want to eat at the restaurant. The location wasn't the best for diving. I had to rent a car to drive to the other side of town where my dive op was located. I found out later that there is a boat that picks up divers daily at 11 am from the hotel but I don't recall the name of the dive op. A cab ride to town was reasonable (50-80 pesos). Negotiate the price BEFORE you get in the cab and get some pesos so you don't get ripped off. Drinks were ok. All the liquor is bottom shelf but it wasn't terrible. No hot water in the hot tub. I checked the water on a couple of other beachfront suites and they had no hot water either (just cold and room temp water). I was told by someone I met in the pool that the junior suites in the tower are the best deal. Water was brown at the beach but it was still a nice beach. I would stay here again.

Staff was awesome. So professional, so hardworking, from bell boy to waiters, to entertainment people, to bartenders(Hola ... Enrique!!), to helpdesk, to management. And yes, I'm not staff and yes it's my first trip to a Sol Melia hotel. The water in front of the hotel was ok some days, other days was dirty. The hotel near by has a beautiful beach and snorkeling place. Much better, the beaches on the eastern side of the island are taken from paradise. Don't hesitate to spend some time there if you have a chance. Food at the hotel was excellent. I read so many reviews about the quality of the food, and most of them were not proven right. We had every night lots to choose from.

Fantastic trip. Great hotel
LC Frugal Aug 29, 2009
The food was very good. The hotel room was clean and spacious. Service at the hotel was phenomenal. I would definitely stay ... at the Melia again. The only downside, aside from the swim up bar drinkers that filled the adult pool most days, was the water in front of the hotel. On several days, the water was brown with seaweed. The days that were clear, there were few fish. Having said that, you can walk down to the next hotel's beach and, given that they built a concrete pier, the water is a beautiful Caribbean blue and the fish are abundant. This was one of the best family vacations we have ever taken, and we wish we would have stayed longer. I recommend the Jeep tour of the island. I didn't rent a car while there and didn't see the need to do so. A trip into town was about $8 each way and the Jeep tour fulfilled the rest of our desire to see the island.
Traveler type: Family
Take the taxi into town. It only costs about $8 each way and, given how small the island is, I didn't see the need to rent a car. Also, when you arrive and exit out of the terminal, pass by all the people offering taxis, walk across the field, and catch a taxi on the main road.

Overall, the hotel was quite nice. The only problems we ran into came from the Orbitz rep. in Cozumel. He did not return ... calls or e-mails, and did not fully explain things. At one point, we tried to cancel an excursion, but since he could not be reached, by the time he sent our cancellation through, it was a 23 hour notice: not 24. We were forced to do something we did not want to do or else lose our money. We wish we would have booked through the hotel staff instead.

This was a great trip!! The staff was very friendly and helpful. We were always greeted with smiles and friendly faces. Our ... Orbitz rep was there to greet us at the airport and available at our hotel every day. He was helpful and set us up on a wonderful expedition that took us around the whole island. I would highly recommend this!! The food was average, it took us a day to learn what to do...breakfast at the buffet, lunch at the snack bar (pizza, burgers, nachos) and dinner either at buffet or make reservations at the restaurant. We had guests ranging from the ages of 21-72 and there was something for everyone to do. We went horse back riding with Boots and Gato from across the street and had a fabulous time. I read a lot of reviews from both Orbitz and other sites and had mixed opinions, but from personal experience this is a place we plan on returning to. The rooms were clean, the grounds were well kept, and the staff was awesome. The food was mediocre but acceptable. Overall the trip was great and we do plan on taking another trip with our children.

This all-inclusive is a best value. We got a fantastic price. The food was very good at the buffet. The dinner at Paraiso ... was very good, with no extra cost. We went for the golf, which is a great value. The supplement for the golf package was about $20, and we paid a $30 cart fee per person. The course is very interesting and has a lot of wildlife. (Only one to choose from) The A/C in our room was not working properly our whole stay despite being worked on twice, but it was tolerable. Our friends rooms were working great . Oh, one more thing.. Overall we had a good experience at the hotel. The view is great, the garden ocean view rooms are standard and the ocean ... view tower rooms are above standard as they are larger than the garden rooms. Our only negative comments about our stay is that it took two days for the staff to accommodate us with a new hotel room as we had no a/c. Staff came to assess the problem, but did not allow us to change our room immediately. We did get moved to the tower rooms, which was an upgrade from the ocean view garden room. And the internet access the hotel gives you is intermitent; you don't get a constant connection, but not many guests are there to check the internet anyways. Overall, we had a great time.
Traveler type: Couples
To get a dinner reservation in the evening at the hotel, you actually have to go in person at 6:55 a.m. to the front desk and make a reservation. The staff do not accept calls from your hotel room. The dinner selections are very good.

If you plan on going out to town at night, pick a weekend because everything is slow during the week.

We went for an our presentation and we've got a scooter for a day + 2 tickets to Chakanaab park.

Take the taxi into town. It only costs about $8 each way and, given how small the island is, I didn't see the need to rent a car. Also, when you arrive and exit out of the terminal, pass by all the people offering taxis, walk across the field, and catch a taxi on the main road.

Most of the island activities close at 4pm to accommodate cruise ship schedules... be warned!!!
--goddess j, zeeland, mi Aug 27, 2009
Close enough to downtown for shopping but far enough for privacy and quiet.
--The Harrells, Houston, TX Aug 7, 2009
Go after 4:00pm to the flea market to avoid the crowds from the cruise ships!
--Mom23bz, Fort Worth TX Aug 1, 2009
Go in to town to shop after the crusie ship leaves. This is around 4pm. You get better deals and less people traffic. If you can rent a car must go to Coconuts to eat on the other side of the island. Great Ritas

Go shopping after 6 in the evening, that is when the cruise leaves and prices drop!!
--Loving Melia, Houston, TX Jul 24, 2009
You have to try the CASA MISSION RESTAURANT . Great atmosphere, amazing food, at an incredibly reasonable price. I'm talking about steak and lobster dinners for two with all the trimmings for less than $50 USD .

To get a dinner reservation in the evening at the hotel, you actually have to go in person at 6:55 a.m. to the front desk and make a reservation. The staff do not accept calls from your hotel room. The dinner selections are very good.

Get the coconut ice cream

Don't get caught by the "Travel Advisors" in the airport. It's a time share no matter what they tell you. We wasted a whole day.

Wherever you stay in Cozumel, do the Pirate Dinner Cruise. It is awesome!
