Secluded at Makena Resort on a perfect .25 mile of a beach at the foot of Haleakala, the Makena Beach & Golf Resort is a sanctuary. The serenity can be felt from the first moment a lei of seashells is draped over your shoulders and you are welcomed with the genuine smiles and warm attention of the staff. The entire hotel is built around an Asian meditation garden with stone paths, quiet corners for contemplation, waterfalls, and streams swarming with brilliant red and gold carp. The roof is the sky. The door of every room opens to this atrium, while the windows and lanai look out upon the ocean. Most people settle into the immediate serenity and find themselves sitting beside the pool or on the beach, watching all the little white boats streaming to Molokini. And if the sea is calm, they may hear the great humpback whales singing in the deep.

Makena North Golf Course - Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the Makena Course opened in 1993 to rave reviews. The Course feels more like a nature walk than a golf course, with captivating mountain views of Haleakala Crater and sweeping views of the blue Pacific Ocean. Hawaiian rock walls remain where they were found, and natural gullies and stream beds are left intact.

Prince Keiki Club - Our popular children's program, Prince Keiki Club. Keiki (children) ages 5-12 can enjoy hours of fun and meet friends from around the world, with activities such as sand castle building, pool swims, Hawaiian arts and crafts, treasure/scavenger hunts, treasure box making, and much more.

Makena Beach & Golf Resort guests can relax poolside in one of our cabanas, or beachside with our Beach Concierge staff.

Guests will be allowed to smoke on the lanais of designated room. All other guestrooms will be designated as non-smoking both on the lanai and within the room. Guests who smoke within a guestroom may incur a deep-cleaning charge of up to 200USD as determined by the Hotel Assistant Manager.

These changes have been made as a result of the new Hawaii State Second Hand Smoke Bill This law covers all enclosed or partially enclosed or partially enclosed areas open to the public in Hawaii. Violators of this law and owners of establishments where the violation occurs will be subject to fines.

In a world where life sometimes can get too complicated, we are making things a little easier for you. A Bit Dated, Great Beach!

Hannert Oct 23, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

The resort is a little further away than the others on the Wailea/Makena strip. This is actually a strength as we felt like ... it was more secluded. Overall, we found the resort a little dated (it's been a while since the last remodel) but quiet with a SUPER breach that was not crowded, offered great sand and amazing snorkeling just offshore. The room was clean and quiet. Would stay here again as long as it's less expensive than its neighbors.

If you decide to do the sunrise bike ride down Haleakala. Do not go on a guided tour. Find a ride that will let you go at your own pace without someone looking over your shoulder. We are very glad we did.

Enjoy the beach activities at the private beach and pool at the Maui Prince. You don't need to drive to go kayaking or snorkeling, it's right there at the resort. Also, we played a few rounds of put-put golf on the mini course, pretty challenging but great family fun.

Best place for a getaway

Bill Sep 8, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

We needed a hotel that was quiet and restful, yet not so far away from the rest of the world that we could not get to daily ... activities easily. This hotel meet all our requirements. We were able to do daily activities around Maui and get back to the hotel with less that 20 minutes of driving, yet the hotel was secluded enough that our evening were spent in quite rest and relaxation. The staff was first class. Very helpful and full of information on activities and directions to points of interest. This was very helpful when we were having problems with our airline reservations. The beach had an activities desk. There were plenty of activities to part taken in and billing went to the room instead of have to carry credit card or cash to the beach.

Maui Prince Stay

jas Aug 31, 2009

The location is great because it's quite and away from the touristy hustle & bustle. At the time of our visit we could not ... enjoy most of what we read that was offered. Dining was limited and the Koi Pond was empty, smelled and there were dead baby fish near the drain. The pool was very small & the water didn't feel good, it felt kinda merky. The employees were great, except most had negative attitudes because of their hours being cut. It was sad, but what can you do. It was pretty uncomfortable when your trying to relax. Here they are suffering and I'm sitting drinking my Mai Tais.

Serene location, away from the busy areas of the island, truly relaxing in an island oasis. Forget driving to snorkel ... locations, there is great snorkeling right off the beach. We also enjoyed the Maui Sunset Luau, it was interactive and the food was great. Last luau we had attended was much like a cattle call, this was more like a party.

"Great Hotel for the Price"

Kristle Aug 28, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

My husband and I stayed at the Maui Prince Hotel in Wailea for 11 days, 10 nights during our honeymoon. We loved it! It is ... in an excellent location near some of the higher end resorts such as the Four Seasons, Fairmont, and Marriott. Additionally, it was only 25 mins. from Kahalui Airport. The room was clean and hotel staff were very friendly. It has its own private beach which was really nice and not crowded at all. It is very reasonably priced for the location. We gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the small pool and limited hotel restaurant options. Other than that, we would definitely recommend the Maui Prince to anyone visiting the island!!

Best Hotel on the Island

We have been going to the Maui Prince for 10 years. We try and go to the island in January, both of our birthdays are in ... January. This trip, we didn't do anything but rest. We've already done all the touristy stuff, all we wanted to do was rest. We've had a very stressful year with severe family problems and it was our doctor that told us to go and get away for awhile. It was one of the best trips we've made. We have been going there so long, the personel have become real good friends of ours.

There is a small restaurant in Kihei called the Kihei Cafe. It doesn't look like much but the food is great. If you go you have to have the Loco Moco. It's fried rice that they put in a bowl and turn upside down on a plate. Put a hamburger patty on the top, an egg cooked anyway you want and then covered with this wonderful brown gravy. It's a must have.

Great Location, Poor Customer Service

Dorrie Jul 15, 2009

This hotel has a lot of potential but is poorly managed. The staff lied about capacity when we asked for a room with a better ... view. We were told by the desk clerk that they were at 70% capacity when they were in fact at 34% as we observed the bellman's computer when we arrived. The manager would not come out and speak to us but told the desk clerk to tell us it would be an additional $70 a night for a regular room with a better view ans $400 more a night for a suite. He said he could go no lower without getting fired. Unprofessional to say the least. Our air conditioner never worked properly even after a supposed repair. The service issues are too numerous to list. This hotel is in need of better decor and is very plain. The rooms are spacious and the lanai's are large. It could be a great resort if properly managed.

Secluded, better plan alot of drive time

Amanda "just married" Jun 23, 2009

It was so far away from everything. We had to add two hours of drive time to every trip that we wanted to plan. The ... bathroom was not that clean (the shower curtain was black on the bottom). The only saving grace was the beach in the back. Gorgeous white sand, great snorkling and TURTLES! The restaurants were over priced (beware of the brunch, not worth it!) Also, after a 15 hours to get to Hawaii, our room wasn't ready! Then they offered us a cool cloth, seriously! We tried to convince ourlselves the views were worth it...

I know some people complained about the decor but we didn't think it was bad at all. In fact, it fits the atmosphere of Hawaii. It's very quiet and relaxing. The staffs were very nice and helpful. We did drive to Kihei and Lahaina and were glad we picked the Maui Prince hotel. We will definitely stay at the Maui Prince gain.

The Japanese restaurant in the hotel is very nice. There are some nice resataurant within a short drive, namely Sea Watch, Cappacio, and Cafe O'Lei. We went to Joe's and San Sei Sushi based on recommendation and didn't think they were good for the prices.

More of a quiet and serene experience - if you want to get away from the noise and kids on the Wailea strip of hotels. ...

Good value for the money

sb Jun 5, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

Great stay here. Friendly staff. Not nickeled and dimed like everything else on the island. Mildly deserted feeling due to ... down season and lack of numerous guests. i.e. not to crowded. Some of the restraunts are closed for remodels. Clean but older hotel. Has been well maintained. Beach was maybe the best on the island for relaxation, lack of crowds, overall surreal setting close to a resort. Awesome sunsets and the weekends attract a lot of locals.

Beautiful Property - needs TLC

Even though the hotel needs a little TLC. We enjoyed our stay very much. We ended up going to a resturant named "KO" ... because the famous japanesee resturant there at the Maui prince was closed.

DO NOT stay at the Maui Prince

We love Maui Jun 1, 2009

The hotel itself is okay, however I would not stay there again. The Maui Prince does offer, in my opinon, the best beach to ... snorkel and hang out but the hotel has the worst food and is in desperate need of a renovation. Don't count on going to the pool because it is about the size of a any other backyard pool but I guess that doesn't matter too much when you have the most beautiful beach around the corner. The price is decent, I guess you do actually get what you pay for because it is one of the cheapest around.

The donut hotel

Details are crucial Jun 1, 2009

This is a poorly designed hotel. It is shaped like a giant donut, with an open atrium for the hole. The good part of this ... is that most rooms will have a good view off the lanai. But the downside is that all the public spaces are extremely institutional in feel and quite lacking in charm. There are zero, I mean absolutely no, "cutouts" in the donut. So standing in the lobby, there is no view of the ocean, or pool, or anything pretty.... just a view of many floors of the doors to all the rooms, in unvarying, unrelieved concentric array. The poor workers at the front desk! All the beauty of Hawaii, and not a shred of it visible! We found ourselves going down the fire stairs to exit the building ASAP and be outside as the walk through the lobby was so unappealing. (Also the atrium has a lot, in the bad way, of birds.) The pool is also odd -- a relatively small pool, it is a circle (do I detect a theme here?) of 100% deep end -- over 6' deep of water. There are no stairs down into it, only ladders. There is no getting into this pool slowly or halfway. If you like to kind of hang out in a pool without having to tread water or hang off one of the side walls, this is not the pool for you unless you are at least 6'5". The beach is not at all visible from the pool. The layout of the grounds is also odd... there are 2 huge berms (hills, kinda steep in fact) which hide the view of the beach completely until you walk up to the top of the second hill. We found this also to be such a waste of the beauty of Hawaii. You can either sit at the pool, far from the beach, or sit at the (hot!) beach, far from the pool. There are two lovely grassy areas on the berm nearest the ocean, but they don't want you to put beach chairs there even during the day because they have weddings in the evening. We found this hilarious (chairs can be MOVED, duh!) and ignored it. Even if you do this, you are unlikely to have a view of the ocean from your chairs due to the slope of the berm. We stayed here because we were making a tour of all the islands and wanted to try the Wailea area. This is the sister hotel of the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel on the big island, a very lovely hotel indeed. The Maui Prince has some similarities, especially in the room layout, but it cannot compare with Hapuna. Both hotels have this neat feature of two front room doors -- one solid and one louvered to let in the breeze. So you can sleep with your glass lanai doors open, using the screened lanai doors in their place, and also use the louvered front room door (instead of closing the regular solid front room door) to have a breeze pass through all night, and hear the sound of the ocean (though often you instead hear the sound of the irrigation system). At the Hapuna, the louvered door is completely screened, to keep critters out. In our room at the Maui Prince, our louvered front door had no screens, so we weren't able to take advantage of this rare and really cool feature. The staff was okay, not up to Hapuna Prince standard. When we drove up, no bellman came to meet us or deal with the car at all (he was there, just didn't bother). So we just went right by him up to the desk to check in. We were surprised not to be offered an upgraded room, given our Prince Preferred membership, our many stays at a sister Prince property, and most especially the fact that the hotel was very empty. Hapuna has never failed to upgrade us! As for the location, this is a quiet area (it's the last hotel on this end of Maui) and the beach is very nice. If you plan to eat/do stuff in the immediate area, then it's great. If you plan to see a lot of Maui, expect to do a fair bit of driving (though this is also true of Lahaina side). We weren't deterred by the location, but would not stay here again for the reasons discussed above. If you want to stay in Wailea without staying somewhere snooty, this could be a fine hotel for you, especially if you get a nice ocean view r...

The Kiowa Cafe at the hotel was excellent overlooking ponds with fountains and koi fish and friendly, helpful staff. The Club House up at the golf course was also a good place to eat lunch. We would also recommend Mulligans at Wailea Golf Course and Joe's Bar and Grill in Wailea for excellent food (short drives).
