Pleasantly surprised
Big Rick Oct 31, 2009
From most of the reviews my expectations were really low. All I wanted was a bed and shower anyway. I was pleasantly ... surprised. The rooms were always clean every day when I returned. Although a bit hard to find on the first day it was centrally located to all the sites. All the staff were pleasant, smiling, and helpful. The grounds were beautifully kept. Right on the beach. Front desk persons were very helpful and knowledgable. Fantastic place for breakfast within walking distance " Eggberts". I would stay there again in a heartbeat. If you are expecting 5 star amenities stay somewhere that offers things like that. The staff at the Sands are more than happy and quite competant to assist you in any way they can.

Walk or drive to Snorkle Bob's and rent your snorkle package for $9.00 for the week. Look in almost any Kauai attraction booklet and get a coupon buy one get one free. That's two complete packages for $9.00 a week. Also, Snorkle Bob can hook you up to a Timeshare presentation and you will get $100 cash, boogie boards and great discounts on food and shopping.

Great location, within walking distance of shops, restraunts, lounges, steps to the beach. Central location for driving ... around the Island. View of grounds and ocean most pleasing. Quiet and restful, just what I was looking for. Would have liked a coffee pot in room and pool hours were limited, missed that late night swim. Would definetely stay here again though.

Had a Wonderful Time
Mocha Man Oct 12, 2009
We were upgraded to a pool view room and were very happy with the room. We asked the staff to increase the number of wash ... clothes each day and they were very accommodating. The hotel was right on the beach and we were able to enjoy the sunrise each morning. The front desk offered us a hot water pot for our stay after seeing that we were coming often for hot water. The rooms were clean, comfortable and reasonably priced. If we go again we will upgrade to a unit with a kitchenette. The ability to prepare food in the room would help us to afford some of the other pleasures of th Island.

Honeymoon
Herrmann Golfnut Oct 11, 2009
We went for our honeymoon. We had requested a kingbed several weeks before arriving. Once we got there we were informed that ... we would have to upgrade to a garden view for $10 more a night to get a king bed. The garden view was a 7 foot high black fence with trees behind it. The staff was friendly and rooms were clean. The pools hours are ridiculous (9am to 6pm). We never had a chance to use the pool, since we would always be gone before 9 and returned around 7pm. It is a quaint hotel, but there are other hotels in the same area that offer alot more ammenities for about the same amount of money we paid for the upgrade.

This was my base for hiking and beach trips. Not luxurious but comfortable enough and low price, especially for a beachfront ... hotel. Parking spaces are small - get an economy car. It's a shame the restaurant has closed; makes it feel rather empty.

Perfect for a Kauai Explorer Sep 30, 2009
The hotel is old....very old. But, its cheap. It was prefect for me, but wouldn't be the best for a couple or a family. I ... didn't spend much time at the hotel, just basiclly to sleep. The hotel location is good because its next to the Coconut Marketplace, and its also centrally located on the island, so it takes about an hour to get to Ke'e beach, and about an hour to get to Waimea Canyon.

Kauai Is AWESOME! Sep 28, 2009
Staff is freindly rooms are clean (though pretty dated) and they have good air conditioning. The Kauai Sands Hotel makes for ... a nice base camp for the rest of the Island. There are several snorkelling and kayaking destinations within a short drive and about a 40 minutes to destinations like Tunnels in the North or Waimea Canyon to the west.

Close to beach - cheap motel
Pre-empty nest Family Vacationeers Sep 14, 2009
We took the cheapest rooms on the parking lot side - so a little noise was expected. The pool was convienent, but since ... there was no pool light it closed at dark. Everything was old but the sheets and towels were clean everyday. This was was the cheapest hotel I've ever stayed in - but it wasn't the worst. The mattresses were firm, coffee was a buck, staff wasn't the friendliest, but still somewhat helpful. We were promised rooms right next to each other but the morning clerk gave them away - the upstairs had a little view, the downstairs room patio faced a rockwall but was quiter. Everything worked and in a down economy we took cheap and they were trying to save where they could. I got what I paid for and I wasn't unhappy - we saved a few bucks on the hotel and did a couple of extra things on our trip instead.

Very satisfied, no frills
Palani Sep 7, 2009
I made sure I read the reviews others had posted so I knew what to expect. The room was clean with no frills. We only needed ... a place to sleep so we didn't need a hotel that offered a list of amenities. It is dated and does not have an elevator to the second floor but other than that it met all our needs. The staff was very friendly which more than made up for the lack what one might expect.
Traveler type: Family
There is a number of shops right next door that could meet most needs. There are places to eat and stores in most price ranges.

2nd time I've stayed at Kauai Sands this year. Wonderful aloha spirit with the the front desk. 1960s Hawaii 5-0 look and ... feel. First time I've gotten my girlfriend to come to the islands with me and stay in less that a 4-star. She survived (despite her extreme discomfort with our cute lizard roommate) and she loved the staff. I like this place!

cheap budget hotel
Uyen Aug 31, 2009
Let's start with the positive. The place was in a really convenient location, in the middle of everywhere we wanted to go ... and easy to get to. If you just need a cheap, clean, safe, and quiet place to shower and sleep, this is the perfect spot. We were gone most of the day exploring the island, so little time was spent hanging out in our room. The staff were very nice. They could not help that the place needed hardcore renovations. The rooms have very outdated furnishings and decor. Even the exterior of the buildings looked very shabby and needed remodeling. The front desk told us they were going to convert to timeshares at some point in the near future, but not sure when.
Traveler type: Family
checking in online saved us lots of time. before leaving for kauai we did it at home, but leaving kauai we checked in online at a kiosk in the coconut marketplace that you could pay for internet access and print out your boarding passes.
