This world-class resort casino is family-owned and operated. The son of Basque immigrants, John Ascuaga built the Nugget from a roadside coffee shop that opened in 1955. His touch is noticeable in details large and small, such as hand-picked friendly staff, welcoming ambience and a reception desk separate from the casino area.
And check out our separate listing on this site for The Courtyard at John Ascuagas Nugget!
John Ascuaga's Nugget offers a full array of casino entertainment, nine restaurants, four live music venues including the incomparable Celebrity Showroom. The two 29-story hotel towers include a variety of room accommodations from deluxe king and queen rooms to an assortment of suites. The spa offers an extensive selection of body treatments and beauty services. A fitness center adjoins the pool. A business center, large arcade and full gift shop are also available.
John Ascuaga's Nugget Hotel has 1,382 oversize luxury guest rooms in two 29-story towers. The newly-renovated East Tower features gorgeous new rooms with a comfortably sophisticated palate of warm tones, dark woods and crystal accents. They include heavenly presidential mattresses with upscale bedding and extra fluffy pillows. A 42" flat screen television adorns the wall in the main living area and high-speed WiFi is available. The elegant bathrooms are a showcase of marble counters and floors, upscale fixtures and beautiful details. All the new rooms include coffee pots on a separate marble counter in the entry. The traditionally-furnished west tower offers extra large rooms with comfortable sitting areas including couches in the standard king room, cozy bedding and spacious bathrooms. Many suite upgrade options are available. Both towers offer sweeping views of the incomparable Reno skyline and spectacular Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Entertainment every weekend includes headliners such as Lyle Lovett, the Oak Ridge Boys, and Hall and Oates, as well as boxing matches and other events. The 700-seat Celebrity Showroom offers classic seating in booths tiered down to the stage. The Rose Ballroom seats 2,000 for entertainers such as Clint Black, Chris Isaak and Wynonna. The Casino Cabaret features jazz, blues, and rock and roll. Live jazz artists play in the Orozko Lounge and dancing to a live disc jockey is featured in Trader Dick's. The casino supplies 85,000 square feet of slots, video poker, keno, blackjack, craps, roulette, poker, and other table games. One level below the casino are sports and race books, with the race book featuring desks illuminated by green-shade lamps. A tile path leads around the casino to restaurants. There also is a bingo parlor.
During warm weather, sliding glass roof panels allow fresh air into the sun drenched fifth floor which houses the large atrium pool. Outdoor sun decks overlook unobstructed mountain views. Eight, one-person spas flank one side and a large, round spa tub for 16 is at the end of the pool. Luxuriously padded chairs and lounges line the surrounding deck. A tent permits private massage. Wireless Internet access is available in the rooms, lobby and restaurants (surcharge). Right outside the casino is Victorian Square the center of downtown Sparks, which offers interactive fountains and gazebos. Live music is featured on some summer evenings. Victorian Square also is home to many of Reno/Tahoe's nationally-recognized special events, including The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off, July 4th Fireworks Festival, Hot August Nights and the annual Hometowne Christmas parade.
A resort fee of $5 per night, covering use of the atrium pool, use of the fitness center, vale parking, garage parking and airport shuttle, will be charged at the front desk.

We were there on business. Its obvious the hotel wants your business, and did do a great job for us. The only negative I ... found is that we had to put a towel across the bottom of the door to try and stop the heavy cigarette smell in our NS room. Otherwise a great place with very good/reasonable restaurants

Wedneday nite happy hour - Live Jazz was great! Many locals attended only problem was that it lasted less than 90 minutes. Place was packed during the performance. When it ended everbody left. Why would you stop Jazz music after two hours with a full house? At least continue with a DJ and keep your hotel guests at the bar.

The good, the bad, and the really ugly
Geno Nov 9, 2009
Front desk service was terrible. It took me an hour to check in because the clerk had no idea how to handle [...] reservation ... which included upgrades. Three time during my stay the cold water went completely off, once during my shower and I was almost seriously scalded. When I requested to speak to the hotel manger on duty about this dangerous plumbing malfunction (what if it was a child taking a shower?) no manager returned my call, and this was the second occurrence! Remodled room was very spacious but noisy becasue it faced the freeway, in fact many rooms face the freeway. Pool was very nice (great for families) and every meal we had was fantastic.

- striking exterior appearance against the sierra mountains. - somewhat confusing valet service - pleasant and stylish ... casino-lobby with speedy check-in - wide variety of gaming - very nice pool and excercise area with ceiling windows that can open to night sky - wide variety of restaurants with tasty food but a little on the high side - located very close to transit terminal and other city spots - steep additional charges for internet access for such a nice hotel-casino - friendly staff - nice views of sparks/reno/sierras from higher floors

Grandma Susie Oct 19, 2009
The best service was at the Starbucks and the Rotessiore Buffet. Upon on arrival they had use registered for 4 nights ... instead of 2 they put us in a non smoking room when smoking was requested. My grandaughter and her spouse got a different room at that time. They didn't run their games as they should have. My grandson is a dealer in Las Vegas and also a player. His experience was all but a good one and refuses to return. My grandaughter is 23 and looks 12 she always keeps her i.d. with her because of this. Once approached and presented her i.d. they continued to harass her and her spouse at the pool. She even offered to go to her room to get her passport. The over all experience was undesirable.

Our stay was very brief, but quite enjoyable. We had a terrific pizza in one of the hotels many places to eat, but just ... weren't there long enough to try out the pool or spa or other amenities. We really appreciated the floor plan of the casino area. Somehow being spread out like that made one feel more privacy when playing the slots, and you don't have to smell whatever the guy next to you is smoking or drinking (:

NICE ROOMS, BUT
Babz Sep 18, 2009
Rooms are clean and nice, but no in-room amenities like coffee maker, microwave or fridge. You have to buy every morsel of ... food, and it will cost you $2.50 for a bottle of water, no water fountains that I saw. Buffet is $16+. Noisy factor comes from thin walls and room doors that everyone seems to slam all night long. Had non-smoking floor but smelled smoke in halls often. Had bad experience in one restaurant with soup that made both of us physically ill, but otherwise food was very good to excellent. Don't think our issue was the norm. PLUSES - lots of penny slots, variety of restaurants in-house, got room cheap online, located right off 80 for easy access, free parking abounds. Beds very comfy, but in room TV a bit difficult to use and renting movies cost approx $14. No deal there. another plus, most of the staff was very friendly and helpful. Loved waitress [...] and bell boy {?} [...] from PA.

I relaxed in my beautiful room in the East tower. I ran in the fitness center, ate at the Rose for breakfast, and swam in ... the beautiful pool. Walked to In & Out Burger, saw a movie across the street at the Century 14, and took a cab to the legends factory outlet mall very close by about 10 min. and $12.00 ride each way. Awesome, relaxing trip and I never even gambled.
