Overall, it was okay. The hotel seems like a classy hotel, but the walls seemed pretty thin. We heard hall way noises all ... night long. The amenities were good and the room was spacious. Lastly, I woke up to an allergic reaction to the bedding. I'm pretty sensitive to dust/dirt so I don't know if I would give it a clean thumbs up.

Front desk employee, [...], was wonderful and attentive. She upgraded our reservations and was very helpful. Other front ... desk woman completely ignored both my partner and myself as we stood in front of her. She instead pick up the phone and carried on a conversation. This was absolutely unacceptable. Room service and valet service very good. [...], waiter at the Top of the Mark, was excellent. Friendly and engaging. His counterpart, old cranky pants, [...] I believe, should have retired years ago as he had the personality of pocket lint.Great location. Great suite. Great drinks!

Costs add up
Acugirl Aug 21, 2009
The hotel is fine. I was happy with the room. But why does the hotel have to charge for wi-fi? It's annoying when nice hotels ... start nickel and dime-ing guests for everything. Better to charge one price and include the extras. My husband spent some time in the Fairmont Hotel (across the street) and was able to use their wi-fi in the lobby for free and enjoy complimentary coffee and juice. I was not informed that the hotel was going to put $100.00 on my debit card when I gave it to the front desk for incidentals. I understand that they've probably been burned by people who don't pay, but at least let me know what you're doing so that I'm not surprised when I do some online banking and find that sum listed on my account. Parking fee ($47) is outrageous. We used another garage on the hill.

San Francisco in style
Duane and Hector Aug 20, 2009
We stayed for five nights and had a great time. The hotel is top notch, very comfortable room, nice views of the city and ... excellent central location. I stayed at the hotel once before around 1990 and was looking forward to staying there again. The place had only improved upon itself which I had not thought possible. We highly recommend this hotel. Awesome prices while the California economy is suffering. Help them out and take advantage of getting an outstanding stay in an amazing city. Make your trip even more pleasant and memorable.

MARK HOPKINS IN SAN FRANCISCO
Laura in Switzerland Aug 16, 2009
Felt that this hotel is trading on its old reputation -- definitely needs some facelifting and repair work. Funny that ... there's also no restaurant and no really good coffee in the morning. Bellmen were superior as far as helpfulness and friendliness went. Front desk was okay -- and had a snippy concierge who later warmed up a bit.

"Unfortunate First Impression"
"Minnesota Nice" Aug 3, 2009
Everything about the experience was first class except for the first impression upon arrival. We'd specifically requested ... nothing but a non-smoking room, and upon arrival they told us we'd have to stay in a smoking room the first night, and then switch the last two nights. Only after conferring with my wife about whether or not we should stay where we've always stayed, across the street at the Fairmont, did a non-smoking room "magically" appear for the whole three nights (I made sure the person at the desk heard the conversation). Also, we waited behind one couple to check in for at least 15-20 minutes because there was only one desk clerk, and only then did two more people came up to the front desk to help. For a hotel with this one's reputation, it seemed absurd to wait that long. Other than that, the stay was wonderful.

Familiarize yourself with the "Streets Of San Francisco", or you may get taken for a much longer ride by a cabbie. Both cabs we took tried to make the trip a LOT longer than necessary, but as we had been to San Francisco before, we knew the drill, and actually gave them directions to let them know we weren't "rookies". As we always tip well anyway, the longer ride would have been not necessary, but....they didn't know that.

Vacation full of Fun!!!
RC Jul 29, 2009
The hotel is located on top of Nob Hill so you get to have a beautiful view of the city. The only bad thing regarding ... location is that the hill is quite steep so you'll have to hike up and down just to go shopping or eat. You have the option of using taxi or the cable cars. When making reservation, I recommend getting a room away from the street or you'll hear noise all night. My room was on the 9th floor facing the street and all night you could hear the cable cars. If you don't want a smoking room MAKE SURE YOU REQUEST ONE!!! i didn't make that a requirement during reservation so they placed me on a smoking floor. Once we checked in we could smell smoke throughout the room. They had to ionize the room twice just to get rid of disgusting smell.

Definately get the transportation pass which can be found at a booth next the Gap and Forever 21 stores on the intersection of Powel and Market Street. They have passes for multiple days and will save you in the long run. It covers all your cable car rides, subway, and tram lines.

Do make reservations at Hubert Keller's "Fluer de Lys". Amazing restaurant with unbelievable food. Skip "Michael Mina's".. althought the staff was sensational, many of the dishes missed their mark are were off, twice the price of Fluer de Lys and only 1/2 as good.

Go to Ghiradelli Square and treat yourself to a delicious waffle cone ice cream. Do NOT dine at the Franciscan restaurant on the dock. Very pleasant water view; however, the meal was not worth the price. The vegetables were overcooked and the meat I ordered did not taste fresh.

Leave your car at home. Plan to use cable car to get up and down hill to the hotel. If you need a car during your stay there is a zip car location half a block away.
--Old Jim, Chicago Jul 7, 2009
Take the GoCar GPS tour. Dress warm!! They say the tour takes 2.5 hours, but it really takes 3.4-4 hours. If you stop, don't stay too long. That was the most fun I have had in a long time. Eat at Allioto's at Fisherman's Wharf for a moderate priced dinner with great view. Eat at Garry Danko's for a very expenisve, very delicious meal. Everyone should treat themselves to an amazing dining experience at least once in their lifetime.
