Storm Dampened Stay
Rick Nov 16, 2009
We made reservations to stay here while I had a 5 day class in Norfolk. Checked in at the beginning of a November Nor'easter. ... First day was ok, even with wind gust of 70-80 mph the room was comfortable. Early on the second evening the force of the wind was driving the rain under the sliding door and the carpet got very wet, by Wed morning the carpet was sopping wet halfway across the room. We stayed in Norfolk the next 2 nights due to the storm and returned on Saturday. The carpet in our room was still sopping wet,had a very musty odor and maintenance had not been around to water vac the room. I complained to the front desk and they found a dry room to switch us into. The rest of the weekend was comfortable. Obviously the storm screwed up our stay but previous stays there were OK. This is just a plain, no frills hotel in a great location. If you want more than that you'll have to go someplace else

Good value, good location, a bit noisy
Jimbo K. Nov 2, 2009
Good value, good view, right on the oceanfront. Room had a little wear and tear, but it was clean and comfortable. The wear ... and tear issue is being addressed; the hotel is undergoing renovation. The only complaint (and it's minor) is that we heard what seemed to be power tools of some sort in use elsewhere in the building (there were whole floors closed off for renovation) for a while in mid-morning our first day. It wasn't particularly disturbing, but it would have been if we had been sleeping late.

Girls Weekend
Beach Lover Oct 19, 2009
It was our girls weekend away from the kids and hubbies! The parking garage for the hotel goes up to your floor, so you don't ... have to go outside to get to your car if the weather is less than great. It was kind of tight, but still a plus. I would recommend this hotel, and would stay there again. Wasn't super fancy, but room was a decent size, and the small fridge and microwave were definitely welcome. Lots of dining within walking distance. We went to Lavergne's. The food was fantastic! The second night we went to Capt. George's -- a few miles inland. Food was awesome! No complaints.

Lots of places within walking distance! Lavergne's was very nice, and delicious. Many other places to try. Had breakfast at the hotel restaurant. Very good.

For a fantastic place to eat, I suggest Catch 31 located in the Hilton Hotel. The food was amazing and the service impecable. It's a little pricey but well worth it.

Wonderful location but rooms not clean
stangari Oct 7, 2009
Location was fantastic, right on the beach. We had a small balcony overlooking the beach. The rooms were not very clean and ... the resturant's menu was just ok, overpriced for the quality and quantity of the food. With the exception of the location, there was nothing remarkable about Howard Johnsons. Next time, I would spend alittle more and stay at a better hotel.

Overall the hotel was nice. It has obviously been renovated. The rooms were an average size. The hot water took a while, ... but once you got it, it stayed hot. Parking was great - you parked on the level of your room. Overall an average stay, but a good deal pricewise.

MiMi Sep 13, 2009
My sister and I took her grandsons for a last hoorah before the oldest one started kindergarten. We had a fantastic time!!! ... The hotel was close to everything, ocean, shopping and dining. We didn't have to drive anywhere, which was good considering it was Labor day weekend. (A lot of traffic) The hotel was clean, the staff was nice and the restaurant was delicious and reasonably priced. I highly recommend the hotel.

Beach front at the Howard Johnson
Sailorlil Sep 11, 2009
Staff was super friendly. Location was on the boardwalk - we wanted to stay at the finish line of the half marathon, so this ... was perfect. The rooms were clean and had mini fridges and microwaves. We were told they are in the process of renovating. Updating the look would definitely help, but for the price and location, this was perfect. Restaurant downstairs was reasonably priced and the service was friendly. We plan on staying here again for next year's race.

Graet Hotel for the price
PhillyFan Aug 30, 2009
This was a family trip. Room was spacious with grate ocean view from 4th floor. Four adults shared the room's two queen beds ... that were pretty comfortable but pillows were ok. Room services were good, kept it clean and gave extra towels without problems. Over all good hotel for the money and great for the location.

Kenny Aug 22, 2009
I loved our location. Kinda tricky to check-in (if with a car). I loved that the parking garage had a level for each floor ... of the hotel. The location was exactly where we wanted - beachfront in the center of everything. The beds weren't comfortable, and the staff sucked.

A little disappointed, good time anyway
janice the traveling granny Aug 8, 2009
Location was great. My daughter had some work to get done and they had no wireless services the first few days. Rooms needed ... a good cleaning and general repair done for the price. 2 nights straight the fire alarm went off for a long time. People one floor down were biten by bed bugs ( thank God it wasn't us). Had a good time despite these things - stayed extra night but regretted that - pull out bed in the oly available room had a sink hole in the middle and the mattress stuffing was exposed.

Food was okay, but over priced. Short drive to great places such as Outback and Applebees.

Pick up the coupon books from the streets or in the hotel hallway. We were able to look through those to plan restaurants to eat at and activities to do; plus many had several dollar savings included in their advertisement.
