Awesome location, in the middle of Old San Juan and close to cruise ships (except Royal Caribbean, which is on the other side ... in the Panamerican port) We got there at noon on Saturday and they let us check in early. The staff was really helpful and knowledgeable, just ask and they will reply right away (we asked about shops, maps, trolley, safe and other topics) In case you forget your toiletries, just tell them and they will provide with complimentary toiletry. We got a balcony room and it was really nice, quiet and cool. It overlooked the park (Plaza de Armas) on the left. There's a trolley stop in front of the hotel, a short and long loop, it is free and will bring you close to points of interest. Get a map from the driver. This is no resort, but it is one great inn.
Traveler type: Couples
After you check out you can leave your bags with them, in case you want to check out the city before your cruise. Also, there is a decent supermarket one block in front of the hotel with good prices on liquor and local beverages (ie. Gasolina). And since you will go to the forts, you can get a week pass for $5 which works for both forts. If you want to take a quick dip in the beach there is a pretty little beach in front of the government offices.

The Inn at the Plaza De Armas is in the perfect location to enjoy Old San Juan. Everything is within walking distance. El ... Morro, the Princess Walk, the shops, the food, the night life is all within a few minutes walk. If you have a need to hit the beach, Condado is easily accesible via the public bus terminal, or a cab. This was the lowest priced room I could find in Old San Juan, and for the price there is no substitute. The Inn was quiet, well staffed, and the room was maintained perfectly for each day of my stay (which was way too short). Everyone was friendly and helpful (thank you, Sandra!) and I would not hesitate to stay again. If you are looking for a pool and hot tub, the Inn is not for you, but if you are looking for a quiet, well maintained room in the heart of the old City, this is IT.

The hotel is in a great location. Centrally located in Old San Juan around all the great shopping areas, eating areas, ... museums, forts, castle and mass transit. While I was there, I visited all the great tourist locations like the castle, the forts, the beaches, all the high end outlet stores like Coach, RL, Guess. Most of the hotel rooms have no windows, and the air conditioner in my room was placed really high up- so the top was cold, but once I got on the bed- I was warm and didnt sleep comfortably. They only give you one pillow and I often prefer two. The floors are tiled so it's cold and uncomfortable to walk on barefoot. The bathrooms are not air conditioned and extremely hot, so you come out of the shower the same way you went in- Sweating! The hotel staff was very friendly and were really great about telling you where to eat, where to go to the beach, which places to visit..etc. Besides the hotel- the trip was amazing. I fell in love with Old San Juan.

The hotel is in a great location in Old San Juan. You can walk to all the shopping and dining that you want. The rooms were ... small but you are not in your room alot. The city is right outside the door. But when you are in your room it is quiet. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. They also had a safe in the room which is great when you are traveling with cash. The only complaint that I would have is that the breakfast is not good. There was box cereal, bad coffee and juice. No fruit or any thing that you would want. But for the price of the hotel and the great location it really did not matter. Old San Juan is a really great place to visit and everyone is very friendly. It was great to spend a couple of nights before our cruise.

When you walk in you think to yourself, wow the lobby is so cute, well enjoy it because after that its all downhill. The ... price was low yes, But I would of paif more for some hot water atleast, our phone was broken so of we needed to call the front desk we had to use our cell phone. they had a sign saying if we njeed toiletries to call the frongt desk we did and they not only did not offer to replace our phone but made us walk to the front desk and pick theseup as well as extra blankets!! I couldnt beleive that. After all this the tiny room that seemed ok to me looked worse and I felt I couldnt breathe. There was no windows and no the walls were concrete. My advice spend the extra money for a better hotel.

I had a very nice experience staying at the Howard Johnson Inn Plaza de Armas Old San Juan. The Check in was a bit late but ... we were able to keep our bags in the hotel although they were not kept in a locker but out in the back of the lobby were people could possibly steal them. The Hotel was in a perfect location and the Hotel staff was very helpful on what to do and were to go. There were no windows in our room so it felt almost like a jail. There was a minor problem with paying for the tax when we checked in, the front desk forgot to collect the bill so we had some minor problems when I was checking out but it was handled well and nothing got too out of hand. The staff was nice and made the diffrence of a good stay at this hotel. If I ever come back to San Juan, I will probably stay at this hotel because of the location and the very kind staff.

Great Place For the Price
Richard Jun 26, 2008
I chose this Hotel based on the price and the location. The hotel was everything I was looking for in a one night stay in Old ... San Juan. I wouldn't miss seeing El Morro when visiting P.R. if history means anything to you at all. It was way cool. But... San Juan is a place to be aware of your surroundings and you get the homeless looking people in Old San Juan. Everyone we talked to in San Juan wanted to get into our pocketbook in some way. We drove around the whole island In Three days and I would not recommend doing that in any less than five days. But even more I wouldn't suggest that at all. P.R. is not a good place to explore if you do not know your way around. They have extremely poor signage!!!!!!!! I am not directionally challenged at all and my best advice is to pick an area and stay there.Puerto Rican drivers and roads make travelling around the island less than fun and I have driven in Italy!!! We really enjoyed the Rincon area it seemed much more friendly.P.R.'S all say go to Viquees( or however you spell it) . Do not go to P.R. without eating at some of the roadside stands they are wonderful!!

The staff at the hotel were very polite, friendly and helpful. The location is perfect for seeing old town San Juan. There ... are lots of restaurants and stores nearby. The room was very clean and it was small but very adequate for me. Air conditioning was perfect. It is obvious that renovations have recently been made. A free and delicious continental breakfast was included in the room price.

The hotel is right in the middle of everything. There are fast food restaurants and lots of sitdown formal restaurants. Many of the Old San Juan sites are within walking distance. Great Location, Cost Too Much
Ingrid Jun 12, 2007
Like all hotels in Old San Juan, Howard Johnson is too expensive for what you get. It is in a beautiful plaza, has an amazing ... staff that is extremely knowledgable and helpful (speak English and will make calls for you if you need), and the hotel is near some good restaurants. However, it is not worth the money is sleep in a tiny room with no windows. It is probably a good deal if you insists on staying in Old San Juan. I suggest staying elsewhere and taking a taxi or trolley into Old San Juan during the day.

LOCATION for VALUE
Laura May 26, 2007
We loved this hotel. The rooms are windowless, but that makes them cool and dark and delicious. VERY Romantic! A real refuge ... from the searing heat and bright sun. You are only steps from a beautiful old world plaza. You can get a coffee there till the wee hours and stare up at the moon and stars. It's easy to imagine yourself back 300 years in the moonlight. I kept expecting to hear the sound of swords crossing and a horse drawn carriage coming around every glazed brick bend of the road. But then you can retreat to your modern day hideaway room. AC working great, TV with lots of english stations, including movie channels. The bathrooms were spotless and the water pressure was great in the showers, which are big enough for two,by the way! You are a short walk from EVERYTHING you want to see in old town. Free breakfast was great! Fantastic thick, hot strong coffee, fruit, cereals assorted hot and cold breads and pastries. I confess I took a half a cup of granola to feed the birds. Bird feeding is a sport in old San Juan. We highly recommend the hotel. We had a wonderful experience at the Plaza de Armas.
