I was there visiting my daughter who attends NAU. I was disappointed because I ended up with a smoking room which I ... detested. [...] I was told I needed to call the hotel directly to ask for a non-smoking room.

You get what you pay for (almost!)
Trip planner mom Aug 21, 2009
We were on a road trip, so this was just a place to stay for the night. The hotel looked like a motel, with exterior room ... doors opening to the parking lot. The good thing was, we could park our car right outside the room and keep our eye on it. The room we got, #120, was supposed to be a non-smoking room, but it smelled funky, the air freshener poorly masking the smell. The front desk did not want to change our room, and kept claiming our room was a non smoking room. We were too tired and had a long drive ahead of us the next morning, and just stayed put. The next morning, I complained to a different guy at the front desk again about the smell, and the guy just shrugged his shoulder, like he didn't know anything, or care, and said nothing. By now, I realized that all our clothes smelled like an ashtray, even my kids' hair smelled bad! The breakfast area was so small, there was no place to walk around the 5 tables to get our food. When I asked for water, the front desk told us to get it from the vending machine! There are many hotels located side by side along the same access road as this hotel that looked much better kept than this hotel.

We arrived prior to the check-in time, yet we were welcomed. The hotel had been recently remodeled and updated. While it is ... just an average "Overnight Stop" type place, it was clean and the staff friendly and helpful. I would stay here again on a quick overnight trip to Flagstaff/

Barely Passing
Rita Aug 4, 2009
Overall the hotel stay barely gets a passing grade. The front dest staff was very freindy and gave us great service. The ... hotel is close to train tracks so expect to be awaikened often during the night. And the room was not very clean we had to pull the nightstand to plug out phone charger and almost immediately regetted it; that stand was not pulled for over a year for the amount of dust and empty chip containers that we encountered behind it. Besides these (minor) inconveniences Flagstaff is a good stop on a trip to the grand canyon and the hotel presents a good value for the price paid.

Hotel was very cheap, room was clean, recently remodelled. Had fridge and iron in room. Had a pool and access to a hot tub. ... The front desk guy wasn't the most friendly or helpful. I did ask on the orbitz site for a handicapped accessible room as my friend recently had surgery. When I got to the hotel he said "well you didn't book through the hotel, we don't honor requests" and put us on the second floor.

Hotel was fine. Certainly not fancy, but the price was right, and it was decent. But I can see what another reviewer saw ... about the kid at the front desk. Almost COMICAL how rude and abrupt he was. Didn't really bother me, but I was wondering if I might have been on Candid Camera. ;-)

Not bad for your money
EA Jul 22, 2007
This was my first time staying at the Howard Johnson in Flagstaff. Upon checking in two young girls were working the front ... desk, not very friendly. On saturday we left early to sight see, we came back late into the evening, and found that the room had not been serviced, so we called the front desk and advised them, the gal that answered the phone seemed surprised, when I asked if we could at least get clean towels, and the coffee packs, her reply was you will have to come down to the front desk to pick them up. I went down to the front desk, and found nobody there, waited around for 10 minutes before a gentleman came in and asked if he could help me, I said our room was not serviced and was told by your front desk to come down and get towels and coffe, he asked if I had notified the front desk before we left to go sight seeing that we wanted the room serviced, I advised him that in all the hotels that I have stayed in, it was a automatic thing. His reply was that customers get upset, when there room is serviced so they do not service it if they are not notified. Once again while checking out, not a very friendly staff.

A place to sleep
Donald May 6, 2007
Howard Johnson, not what it used to be ! This hotel needs a load of work. It's on hotel-row and probably one of the most ... runned down of them all. I'd spend a few bucks more if I were staying a few days, but we spent one night and that was enough. It's a place to sleep, and that's about all I would do, but never again. It's near restaurants and freeway which is a plus.
