THE SMELL OF THE ENTIRE PLACE WAS TERRIBLE. THERE WAS NO AIR CONDITIONING IN THE HOTEL OR ROOM. THE WINDOW WAS RIGGED NOT TO ... OPEN MORE THAN ONE INCH. WHEN WE RETURNED TO THE ROOM, WE HAD NO TOWELS TO BATH WITH. BAD NEWS. PASS ON THIS PLACE!

A good place to stay if you are prepared

I stayed at this hotel during an exceptionally busy convention weekend in SF. I had read reviews warning about room size and ... noise, and was prepared. I reserved a room with two double beds, which seemed to give more space. As for the noise, well...it is right on Powell, which is very noisy, however the room I stayed in had a window a/c unit, which I turned on to "fan only" and that drowned out a lot of the noise. The hotel doesn't have central air due to age and structure of the building, but it is SF, which rarely requires a/c. The staff were REALLY great - nice and helpful. I had been on really long flights through several time zones, and arrived a couple of hours before check-in. My room was ready and the bed was very comfy! Definitely try out the wine tasting each evening from 5-7; it's fun and the wines were pretty good! If you are in SF for fun and a good downtown experience, then definitely stay here. Just be prepared for small rooms (I've stayed in MUCH SMALLER in NYC and Tokyo), and some noise.

I loved this hotel!! Step out the front door and you step right onto the cable car or the BART. It's located on Powell ... Street, which must be a very popular street in SF because there were people everywhere. The room was very small yet superbly decorated and exceptionally clean; I wasn't even afraid to sit on the bed comforter/duvet. The staff was very professional and available. Dining, shopping (both high end & discount), entertainment, convenience stores (e.g., Walgreens), Starbucks on every corner......you name it, this hotel is encircled by it all. I'd definitely stay there again.

The Good and the bad

The Good: Super location, close to everything you need for your trip. Close to Cable Car station, but don't think about ... getting on one because the line is long from 8am - 9pm. However, it is close to No.30 bus line (China Town, Fisherman's Wharf, Maria District) and F train (all piers). Close to many big department stores, and you can shop till you drop and still can make it to your room. Friendly Staffs. The OK: Small room, it is expected, but still, the smallest room I have ever stayed in. Got 1-2 feet of space around the bed. The Bad: This may be my fault when I booked, I didn't know the room doesn't have air-conditioning. My room is on the 2nd floor of a 6 story building, with a small window facing an enclosed building shaft. It was very hot and stuffy when the window is closed, and it smells too. Even with the window opened, there is no air circulating into the room. I think it should list with bold red letter that there is no airconditioning (as in many hotels in SF) then I would instead opt for another hotel.

Great Location: super close to everything in Union Square, BART is a 3 minute walk, walking distance to everything (we even ... walked down to the Embarcadero and Fisherman's Wharf), great restaurants (New Deli & Santorini - great food at reasonable prices). Didn't get a chance to partake in the hotels morning coffee or evening wine. Hotel is recently remodeled, rooms are very nice (but small), hallways are dark and erie??? Hotel is a little noisy, maybe because it's an old building? Bed was good, bathroom was very nice, housekeeping was very good and everyone was very helpful and friendly. We would stay here again without question.

The room was clean and quiet. Service was excelent. Our room did not have a window (interior room) so the veiw was lacking ... and it was small. There was no real closet, just a rod for hanging clothes on one wall. Large bathtub, comfortable bed with unique but attractive decorating. Very quiet. Overall a good experience.

Recently renovated very clean stylish hotel in a very old building. Rooms are small with small bathrooms. No AC and the ... window opened only about 10" so the room was stuffy. Modernized (iPod player, flatscreen, wifi) but still could use minor adjustments . Staff was kind, And location was great.

Went to enjoy the city. The hotel was in a good location but not clean and extremely small. I would not stay in this hotel ... again. There are much better hotels in the area that have better service and nicer rooms

Very clean and the staff was friendly. room was really nice and very clean. smaller than whats pictured but it gets the job ... done. beds are really comfy and it has vaulted ceilings so the room feels larger and a big flat screen tv. the bathroom is large and very nice. right in the middle of everything at union square so you can walk anywhere around there. would stay again there if i visited.

The hotel itself was great...however, the noise levels at night were extremely unbearable--loud sirens, cable car, screaming ... pedestrians, blaring music, etc...the hotel ought to sound proof their windows it was that loud. I travel a lot for business so I can tolerate some noise, but this was just over the top. The location was great as it was close to shopping and restaurants however there was a extremely high level of homeless people wandering around the area.

The Hotel Union Square has a great location and anbiance. The rooms are small, yes, but the value is great. It is a great ... place to begin your sightseeing tour of San Francisco. The rooms and surroundings are very clean. The bathroom was very charming and spotless. My wife and I will stay there again.

The heat only turned on at night, and after shopping on the second day we returned to find the refigerator taken ot of the ... room. When we called don they acted as if we requested that...which we did not. The bathroom door wouldnt close..you had to lock it for it to close... Other than that...the location was fabulous....completely in the center of Union Square is unbeliveably fabulous.

Tiny rooms, no room temperature controls-could even turn off, no AC, small bathroom, didnt seem really clean. Friendly staff ... and great location except the street noise for rooms facing on Powell(cable cars, trash, etc) at all hours. Said they were doing a major renovation so wait till then before visiting

Our room wasn't huge, but we fit 4 people into a room with 2 full beds reasonably. The decor was nice, things were clean, the ... concierge was friendly if not a bit disappointed when we didn't need any of his services. The stay itself was nice.
